Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

     Ainsi, si un gaz de protection constitué essentiellement par de l'anhydride carbonique est utilisé conjointement avec ces électro/ des, il y a une réduction de la porosité qui tend à se produire àveo

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 the present invention relates to methods and electrodes for electric arc welding of ferrous materials.

   Electrodes having a core wire surrounded by a flux covering have been used for many years and a wide range of different covering compositions have been used to provide a range of electrodes each particularly suited for the welding of specific materials. under specific conditions

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 born not only of current but also of position.

   Electrodes having a coating composition containing a high proportion of "basic" materials, for example calcium fluoride, have been found capable, even at high current densities, of depositing a solder material having good current density. mechanical properties, but the electrodes have been found to be suitable, at high current densities, only for welding in a relatively flat position. Further, when large deposits are to be made with such electrodes under normal conditions, in one or more passes, porosity may result in the deposited weld metal.

   On the other hand, electrodes having a cover containing a high proportion of rutile material have been found to be more suitable for welding in a position other than planar, for example in the horizontal-vertical bead position, but at Unless the current density is severely limited, it has been found that the mechanical properties of the weld metal deposited by these electrodes are relatively poor.

   The term "basic" used in the present patent indicates inorganic materials such as, for example, calcium carbonate in one of its various forms, for example limestone, magnesium carbonate and other carbonates which are "basic" in the sense of the term as normally used for electrode covers and include materials such as calcium fluoride and other metal fluorides and fluoride mixtures occurring in minerals normally used for the preparation. production of flux coverings for welding electrodes.

   In the technique of manufacturing welding electrodes, these "basic" materials are opposed to essentially "rutile" materials which consist of oxides of titanium or of minerals such as, for example, ilmenite which contain a strong proportion of titanium dioxide associated with other compounds. Since zirconium silicate can be used to partially replace oxy-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 Of titanium, this material should be considered a rutile material for the purposes of the present invention, when used in conjunction with oxides of titanium in the coating.

   This patent is based on the provisional specification disclosures filed for UK patent application numbers 16.648 / 56 and 38.689 / 56. In the first of these provisional specifications, examples were given of coated welding electrodes the covers of which comprise rutile material and basic material in proportions determined for use in welding mild steel and of low carbon steel by the process of the present invention.

   It has been discovered that such electrodes can be used for welding in a non-planar position with the process according to the present invention, if this covering contains a much higher proportion of rutile material than that of basic material and one suggested that the rutile material could constitute between 50 and 25% by weight of the coating composition. By the expression clearly higher proportion of rutile material is meant in the present patent not less than 150% by weight of the basic material.

   Another provisional specification filed for UK Patent Application No. 36,154/56 indicates that the rutile material can constitute between 65% and 20% by weight of the coating composition. The first provisional specification also describes electrodes having less than this proportion of rutile material in the covering and, as indicated in the second of said provisional specifications, electrodes having covers whose proportion of rutile material is equal to or much less than that of basic material can be advantageously used for the coating. process according to the present invention.

     Thus, if a shielding gas consisting essentially of carbon dioxide is used in conjunction with these electro / s, there is a reduction in porosity which tends to occur upon

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 .these electrodes when significant deposits are made enme or several passes.

   The expression should be understood to mean "a gas consisting essentially of carbon dioxide", a gas containing at least 80 by volume of carbon dioxide. Carbon monoxide, gaseous hydrocarbons, nitrogen or mono-atomic gases such as argon or a small percentage of oxygen can also be present either singly or as a mixture.

   According to the present invention, a method of electric arc welding of ferrous material comprises establishing an electric arc between a piece of said material and a covered electrode having a core provided with a covering containing a material " basic "as defined in the present patent in proportions of 15 and 60 parts by weight and of the rutile material between 40 and 0 parts by weight, the proportion by weight of rutile material being less than 150% by weight of the basic material, together with feldspar in an amount varying between 10 and 30 parts by weight and ferrous alloys between 15 and 20 parts by weight, and the application of a gas consisting essentially of carbon dioxide to protect the gas. weld zone with respect to the atmosphere.

   It will be appreciated that the above-mentioned range of coating compositions includes compositions containing approximately equal proportions of basic materials, such as fluoridine, and rutile. This range also includes coating compositions having higher and lower proportions of bases and rutiles than these.

   The present invention also includes coated welding electrodes for welding according to this process.

   The coating compositions can also contain metallic powders, such as, for example, iron powder and they can, if desired, contain a small proportion.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 of material intended to facilitate the extrusion of the covering composition. After the coating composition has been applied to the core wire, it is highly desirable that the coated electrode be baked at a temperature sufficiently high to remove free water which may be contained in silicates or other binders or in the minerals contained in the covering composition.

  Removal of this water greatly reduces the hydrone content of the deposited weld metal. In order to facilitate the adhesion of the covering composition on the electrode, the core wire may be surrounded by one or more wires wound helically in one or more layers, this or these wires being in electrical contact with the core wire and being exposed through the surface of the cover for at least part of their length so as to establish paths for the supply of electric current to the core wire.

   The invention can be applied to short lengths of welding electrodes as normally used for manual welding and in which the electrical connection with the core wire is normally made at one electrode end, but the electrical connection with the core wire is normally made at one electrode end. The present invention is particularly applicable to continuous electrodes which can be wound up intended for automatic or semi-automatic welding. It should be noted, however, that short lengths of solder electrodes according to the present invention can be coupled end to end to form a continuous electrode.

   With continuous electrodes covered with flux, it is necessary to bring the electric current from one or more contact members to the core wire when the electrode passes through a solder head. Contact with the core wire may, if desired, be made by one or more knife edges which pass through the cover as the electrode passes through the solder head, but the electrode is preferably provided with one or more layers of wire or wound son in electrical contact with 1'time.

  Coiled wire or outer coiled wire when more than one layer

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

   @ exists, is exposed through the flux cover in order to come into contact with one or more contact members when the electrode passes through a solder head. One form of crosslinked coil electrode construction as described in UK Patent 584,299 is particularly suitable, but other constructions with one or more layers of coiled wires each consisting of one or more wires may be used.

   A weld electrode construction according to the present invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, which schematically shows the / electrode used to deposit a layer of weld metal on a workpiece by the method according to the present invention.

   According to this drawing, a continuous welding electrode is constituted by a core wire 1 surrounded by a mesh of wires, with which it is in electrical contact and constituted by an internal layer formed by four parallel wires 2, 3, 4, and 5 helically wound around the core thread clockwise and an outer layer formed by four other parallel threads 6,7, 8 and 9 helically wound around the layer interior, counterclockwise. Sons 6, 7; 8 and 9 extend to the surface of the electrode and they are in electrical contact with wires 2, 3, 4 and 5. The interstices between the wires of the two layers of the mesh are filled with a covering material. - vrement 10, the composition of which conforms to one of the examples given below.

   The coating composition includes deoxidizing and flux materials and may contain metallic powders such as iron powder.

   The welding electrode is designed to be supplied continuously by conventional means not shown through a nozzle 22 to a part 11 and conventional contact means not shown but arranged so as to come into contact with the parts. outer wires 6, 7, 8 and 9 are provided in order to bring the electric current to the welding electrode immediately before the nozzle 22, by the in-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 Intermediate from the mesh to the core thread 1.

   In operation, an arc is established between the weld electrode and the workpiece 11 and the weld electrode is fed continuously through the nozzle 12 to the workpiece 11 in order to deposit a layer 14 of metal. solder of the desired composition. Carbon dioxide is sent. Our electrode through the nozzle 22 to the part 11 so as to circulate around the welding electrode and protect the welding electric arc, as indicated by the arrows. The shielding gas can also provide protection for the weld area from the ambient atmosphere in the vicinity of the arc.

   The slag forming materials contained in the cover form a protective layer 15 on the deposited weld metal 14, protecting the latter from contact with the atmosphere during cooling. By using one of the coating compositions specified in the examples below, together with the carbon dioxide shield, very stable solder conditions are obtained as well as a very even finish of the solder. Further, the process results in the formation of a slag deposit which can be easily removed.

     It will be appreciated that the construction of electrodes used for carrying out the method according to the present invention can be of any type. The wound wires 2, 3, 4, 5,6, 7, 8 and 9 can, for example, be omitted in the electrode shown in the drawing, so that the electrode is constituted by a core wire 1 having a recovery 10.

   A certain number of examples of welding electrodes and of covering compositions intended to be used for carrying out the process according to the present invention will now be described without limitation. In each case, the electrode must be

 * '' \ fired at a temperature high enough to dehydrate the coating greatly if a weld metal having the best mechanical properties is to be deposited.

  Example 5.

   A method according to the present invention can be used for welding steels of the low alloy type such as, for example, steels resistant to tracking. Typical steels of this type have low carbon contents, generally less than 0.15% and may contain up to 10% of the element :! alloy, such as, for example, molybdenum, chromium and / or nickel. Known steels of this type have the following proportions of main alloying ingredients: a. 0.5% molybdenum b. 1% chromium, 0.5% molybdenum o. 2-2.5% chromium, 1.0% molybdenum d. 4-6% chromium, 0.5% molybdenum e. 3-5% nickel.

   It should be particularly noted that, for the welding of this type of steel, it is necessary to ensure a low carbon content of the weld metal deposited in order to obtain the correct mechanical and metallurgical properties.

   For welding of run-resistant steel, an electrode may comprise a low carbon mild steel core wire surrounded by a mesh consisting of two layers of low carbon mild steel wire. made of carbon wound in opposite directions around the core wire.

   In the interstices of the mesh is maintained a covering having the following composition:
 EMI12.1

<tb> Rutile <SEP> 40 <SEP> - <SEP> 20 <SEP> parts <SEP> in <SEP> weight

 low carbon content.

   The aforementioned "basic" materials can comprise fluoridine, if desired in admixture with carbonates such as calcium carbonates in an amount up to 20 parts by weight of the total "basic" material.
