<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
En conséquence, la présente invention a pour objet : - un appareil de bobinage de bande comportant un dispositif élastique qui est placé entre les châssis et les rouleaux et grâce auquel ces derniers peuvent être déplacés momentanément par rapport aux châssis à chaque zone de recouvrement des spires de la bobine;

saire au moment où une nouvelle spire est ajoutée à la bobine et cela, sans imposer des conditions de charges extrêmement élevées au mécanisme de com- mande des rouleaux ou sans provoquer une forte action de martelage sur la bande proprement dite;
Ces caractéristiques ainsi que d'autres particularités et avanta- ges de la présente invention apparaîtront au cours de la description qui va suivre et qu'on a faite en se référant au dessin annexé, sur lequel : la fig. 1 est une coupe en élévation d'un appareil de bobinage conforme à la présente invention; la fig. 2 est une vue partielle en élévation de face et à plus grande échelle, de l'un des éléments de guidage illustrés sur la fig. 1; la fig. 3 est une vue terminale partielle de l'élément de guidage représenté sur la fig. 2 ; la fig. 4 est une coupe de l'ensemble à ressort, faite par IV-IV de la fig. 2 ; la fig. 5 est une vue partielle en élévation latérale d'une va- riante des éléments de guidage, conforme à la présente invention;

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

The present invention relates to an apparatus for winding strip material as it exits a rolling mill or other strip processing device, and particularly relates to a winding apparatus using elements. for guiding the strip which can be instantly moved relative to their support frames in a direction which moves them away from the strip at each change in diameter, as the successive turns of the strip are wound, which prevents the production of marks on the latter at the locations of the overlap of the front end of the strip.
As the hot-rolled metal strip exits a hot-rolled strip, it is usually sent to a winding apparatus having a spool (or mandrel) driven around which are spaced guide members. which constitutes a delimited path through which passes the front end of the strip with a view to its winding on the reel. These guide elements generally comprise a series of rollers, which may or may not be driven, arranged on a circumference around the reel so as to constitute a substantially continuous passage in which the strip is guided around the reel.
In some of the recently designed winders, the rolls are generally driven at a peripheral speed slightly greater than the speed of travel of the web, so that the rolls advance the web to the immediately following roll. These guiding elements can be made in various ways, since up to nine rollers can be arranged in a circumference around the spool, but a single roll can be used in combination with a series of curved aprons.
Rolling mills with which winders are used can produce material of various widths and thicknesses, and when the material has a substantial width and its gauge is relatively small, the winding is accomplished in a smooth manner. very satisfactory without producing annoying marks. However, during winding of a material having a relatively small width and a substantial thickness, for example a strip material generally known as strip steel the thickness of which may be between 3.17 and 9.5 mm and used in the manufacture of pipes, indentations or annoying marks occur on the surface of the strip.
Whatever the particular embodiment of the guide elements used in combination with the spool in the winding of a material of small width and large gauge, surface marks occur on the inner turns of the spool, which damages the web and thereby decreases the yield of quality product. The production of marks on the turns of the reel results from the fact that the underside of the second coil comes into contact with the sharp angle of the leading or leading end part of the strip at the location or the last part of the web. the first turn moves away from the coil and passes over the end of the strip so as to initiate the second turn.
Note that the leading end of the tape is much cooler than the part of the tape that is wound onto it, and when a tape 3.17 mm thick or more is wound up The variation in diameter of successive turns is so rapid at high speeds that the rollers exert intense hammering on the strip due to the forces exerted on the rollers, causing the lower surface of the second turn to be nicked or scratched by the leading or leading edge of the end portion of the strip. Not only is the surface of the strip scratched, but it is also deformed at the location of the overlap, and the deformation is very pronounced when the thickness of the strip is greater than 3.17 mm.
Since the overlap area at the front edge of the strip passes successively between the spool and each of the rolls,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
each roll is subjected to a sudden outward thrust due to the high acceleration forces which occur when the rolls are suddenly pushed outward with each change in the diameter of the spool. The marking of the strip can gain depth and affect up to twenty turns if the rollers are kept in winding contact with the strip for a corresponding time, which shows that the forces exerted during a winding are very important.
The reduction in the yield of quality product depends on the time during which the rollers remain in their winding position and this time should correspond at most to the laying of the first three or four turns of the strip, after which the worker can move the rollers apart to bring them to their inoperative position.
In current winders, the rollers are coupled to a linkage system common to two or more frames comprising a common control device, or the frames are mounted in radial guide devices and are coupled to individual sets. piston and cylinder duels. In another embodiment, the frames in which the rollers are mounted may be coupled to separate angled levers which are themselves connected to a single common piston and cylinder assembly. In any of these arrangements, the frames, links, guides or bent levers as well as their cylinders to which they are connected, constitute a large mass which must be quickly removed from the coil.
Because the coil is a very rigid element, it does not yield elastically under the repeated thrust created by the cold end part of the strip when the latter bears against the successive contact points of the rollers. Although the rollers are normally moved away from the spool when their piston and cylinder assemblies yield elastically, if a large force is suddenly exerted on the rollers, they and the assembly on which they are carried do not yield. resiliently to an appreciable degree when the force is suddenly applied by the front end portion of the belt, because the inertia of the set of rollers is so great and the rotation is so rapid.
When the strip which is located directly on the end of the reel comes into contact with the rollers, these act as a momentarily fixed mass and, for this reason, it will be easily understood that they deform each successive turn in the tape overlap area.
The apparatus according to the present invention avoids the aforementioned drawbacks relating to the winding of a relatively narrow strip having a substantial thickness, since it has been designed as a winding apparatus comprising guide elements. which can move almost instantaneously so as to move away from the reel, with each variation in diameter as the successive turns of the strip are envided, and without applying excessive forces to the strip at the point of recut- really.
Consequently, the present invention relates to: - a tape winding apparatus comprising an elastic device which is placed between the frames and the rollers and thanks to which the latter can be moved momentarily relative to the frames at each zone of overlap of the turns of the coil;
- a winding device in which compression springs are placed in close proximity to the rollers so that the latter can be momentarily moved relative to the frames in a direction which moves them away from the spool when subjected to abnormal forces - .ment raised, so as to ensure the proper spacing which is required.

take place at the moment when a new turn is added to the reel and this without imposing extremely high load conditions on the control mechanism of the rollers or without causing a strong hammering action on the strip itself;
an apparatus for winding a hot strip material in which two or more guide rollers are mounted in support frames and are arranged so as to be able to move instantaneously with respect to the frames at the moment when a new turn is added to the coil during winding, and so as to let the rollers and the frames return to their normal position with respect to each other.
These characteristics as well as other particularities and advantages of the present invention will become apparent during the description which follows and which has been given with reference to the appended drawing, in which: FIG. 1 is a sectional elevation of a winding apparatus according to the present invention; fig. 2 is a partial front elevational view on a larger scale of one of the guide elements illustrated in FIG. 1; fig. 3 is a partial end view of the guide element shown in FIG. 2; fig. 4 is a section of the spring assembly, taken by IV-IV of FIG. 2; fig. 5 is a partial side elevational view of a variant of the guide elements in accordance with the present invention;
fig. 6 is a schematic view showing the completion of the laying of the first turn on the coil.
It is illustrated in FIG. 1, a winding apparatus 11 for hot strips, comprising two vertical frames 12, spaced apart and parallel, constituted by several sections mutually connected by the necessary horizontal support and separation elements constituted by trusses 13, which forms a very rigid support structure for the other constituent elements of the winder. The frames have corresponding central openings 14 through which horizontally extends a mandrel or spool 15 supported outside the frames in the usual manner and coupled to suitable drives (not shown) which can be used. rotating the reel at a peripheral speed equal to or slightly greater than the linear speed of the strip fed for winding on the reel.
The leading end of the web is directed downward onto spool 15 by inclined guides 16 which form a constriction between a web exit table 17 included in the mill and the top surface of spool 15. A guide section 18, located at the lower end of the guide 16 which is connected to certain other constituent elements of the winder and can be moved with these elements, will be described more fully below, while an upper or cooperating section 19 of the guide 16 is articulated so as to be able to be placed in a horizontal position or in an inclined position by means of suitable devices (not shown completely, since this feature is not part of the invention),
whereby the strip exiting the rolling mill can either be sent to the reel 15 or pass over it to reach another reel if desired. A nip roller assembly 20, shown in the closed position where it grips the web, has a vertically adjustable top roller 21 which is offset from the vertical so as to push the front end of the web down onto a smaller pinch roller 22 and thence

in the winder arranged in its vicinity.
The frames 12 of the winder support two parallel winding frames 23, which are arranged on diametrically opposed faces of the spool 15 and which are articulated to pivot pins 24 carried by the frames of the winder. Each winding frame has driven winding rolls 25 which extend approximately the full length of the spool and which are so arranged that when brought into close proximity to the peripheral surface of the spool. the coil to bear against it, they are arranged substantially diametrically in opposition.
Further, on the winding frames are mounted diametrically opposed guide aprons 26 which are curved so as to be concentric with the spool and which extend approximately the full axial length of the spool. These aprons substantially cover the space between the rollers so as to essentially constitute a continuous passage in which the strip is trapped with a view to its passage at the periphery of the reel. The leading end of the tape to be wound up is brought around the spool by the driven rollers, so as to form a tight winding. The roller 25, placed on the input side of the reel, receives the front end of the strip in cooperation with the adjacent guide 26, it bends the strip and pushes it around the reel.
To each frame are connected piston rods 27 which extend from individual piston and cylinder assemblies 28, whereby the winding roller assemblies are brought into their operating position and spaced from that position. -this. It will be noted that the frames pivot around the shafts 24 when the piston and cylinder assemblies are actuated, causing them to be brought together and away from the coil 15 and, when in their coiled position, constant pressure. predetermined exerted on the cylinders, opposes their displacement.
The take-up rolls can be adjusted from outside the spool and preferably a very small spacing between the rollers and the spool is provided when the latter is not carrying tape, two adjustable assemblies 29 with stop rod being provided for this purpose for each set of winding rollers. One end of the rods 31 is connected to the frame and their other end passes through openings made in a support 32 of the piston and cylinder assemblies 28.
The rods have adjustable stop plates 33, the diameter of which is greater than that of the openings and which are retained on the rods by nuts 34, so that when the piston and cylinder assembly 28 is actuated, the plates abut against the support 32 of the cylinder and, therefore, prevent the frame 23 from continuing to move in the direction of the coil
The lower section 18 of the inclined guide 16 is attached to the winding assembly shown on the left side of FIG. 1, so that as the tape winds on the spool and the take-up assembly is moved away, section 18 moves with it. The other section 19 of the inclined guide 16 comprises a sector 35 articulated to a shaft 36 and connected by links 37 to the winding frame 23.
As the winding assemblies move away from the spool, the lower section of the guide moves outward with the winding frame shown on the left side of fig. 1, and the upper section 19 of the guide pivots upwards, which releases the spool to allow the completion of a winding operation. On the shaft 36 is mounted a deflector roller 38 which prevents the web from being excessively bent when the last turns of the winding which have a maximum diameter are wound on the spool. There is provided at the lower part of the winder a clamping roller 39 which is mounted on a pivoting arm 41 carried centrally and by a pin and connected by its outer end to a piston and cylinder assembly 43.

This roller is used to strongly compress the last turn against the previous turn to prevent the trailing end of the web from floating when the spool rotation ceases. The drawing shows that we must first remove the sets of rolls from winding before the clamping roller 39 can be brought into contact with the strip carried by the spool.
Although not shown, a suitable removal device is used in combination with the winding apparatus intended to bear against the winding and to pass it from the spool to a transport carriage or a further conveyor device for the rapid and efficient removal of the windings from the winding apparatus.
We will now examine Figures 2, 3 and 4 which are partial views on a larger scale of the winding roller assemblies and, since the structure of the two assemblies is essentially similar, only one will describe. only one The two ends of the rollers 25 are mounted in support brackets 44 hinged to the rolling frame 23 by pins 45 '. These brackets have horizontal projections 46 extending outwards, which are adjusted between the branches of two yokes 47 to which ellessJnt articulated by axes 48.
Each of the yokes 47 comprises, on the one hand, a threaded central opening 49 in which is mounted the end of a rod 51 on which is fixed a compression spring 52, and on the other hand an annular recess 53 forming a seat for the corresponding end of the spring 52. On the other end of the rod 51 is placed a cup 54, which serves as a seat for the spring and which can be adjusted axially on the rod by means of a screwed nut 55 in a block 56 and able to be displaced axially with respect to the rod o The block 56 is made to fit in the winding frame and to be supported by it, and it consists of a thick ring whose vertical wall has recesses 57 in which are housed projections 58 provided on the winding frames.
In this structure, the lower part of the blocks rests on a horizontal rod 59 fixed to the winding frame.
Retainer plates 61 are bolted to the inside face of the winding frame and protrude from the upper surfaces of block 56 to secure it firmly in place. It will be appreciated that the spring assembly is designed so that the spring receives the direct thrust along its length from the roller and, since a connection with clearance has been provided between the supports and the rod 51, this action is maintained in all cases. The outer end of the nut 55 carries a washer 62 bearing against another nut 63 screwed onto the outer end of the rod 51, and it has on its periphery a series of radial holes 64 in any one of which is can insert a rod to rotate the nut to adjust the tension of the spring 52.
To carry out an adjustment intended to increase the tension of the spring, it is necessary to turn the nut 55 until the compression of the spring is slightly less than the tension which one wishes to give it, after which, one locks the nut 63, which increases the compression of the spring and resets the roller 25 which had been moved from its proper position during the initial adjustment of the spring. Each bracket 44 has a vertical protrusion 65 which, when the roller is moved to any appreciable degree, serves as a stopper by contacting the head of an adjustable bolt 66 mounted on the winding frame. provided this precautionary measure to protect the spring in the event that the roller 25 tends to be moved too far towards the spring.
The foregoing shows that by placing the flexible device, such as the springs, in the immediate vicinity of the winding rollers, the thrust of the roller caused by the sudden shock undergone by the roller in each zone of the turns is instantly but

momentarily displaced in a direction facing the outside of the coil relative to the winding frame.
Due to the inherent inertia of the bulky roller frame arrangement hitherto used, it is evident that, due to the low inertia of the elastic roller arrangement according to the present invention, it does not produce marks. on the strip at the overlapping location, since the mass to be subjected to acceleration at the impact location is considerably reduced. Since the rollers are successively moved in a direction away from the spool at the overlap, the compressed spring has sufficient force to overcome the constant pressure of the piston and cylinder assembly. which causes the rolling frame to which the corresponding roller and spring are attached to progressively move away from the spool,
this restores the initial position of the roll relative to the winding frame, this action occurring at the end of the winding of a turn and before the moment when the cover passes again under the take-up roll. Under normal conditions, the worker recalls the winding assembly back when three or four turns have been wound on the spool.
Fig. 5 illustrates a variant according to the present invention, comprising a winding assembly 71 of the double roller type, which comprises two rollers 72 and 73 mounted in a common frame 74 and the ends of which are supported in sliding assemblies 75 of bearing blocks, so that the rollers can be moved relative to the frame. Compression springs 76 bear against the top surfaces of blocks which are held in the frame by protrusions 77 extending outwardly therefrom.
The frame 74 is recalled from its winding position by a piston and cylinder assembly 78 connected to the frame by angled levers 79.
The travel path of the winding assembly is controlled by a link 81, one end of which is articulated by a pin 82 to the winding frame assembly and the other end of which is articulated by a pin 83 to the frame. 12 which may be of the type shown in FIG. 1. It will be appreciated that any number of roller assemblies according to the present invention can be used in the winding apparatus for winding up tape, and in particular a large gauge tape, without forces. abnormally high levels are exerted on the rollers at each overlap zone.
From the fact that the mass intended to be accelerated towards the outside of the reel is reduced, it is evident that whenever the overlap zone or although a portion of greater thickness of the strip strikes the roller, the force is proportionally reduced.
From the pin 6 it can be seen that when the strip S being wound up is relatively thick, the winding roll 25 must rebound a short distance substantially instantaneously at the location of the overlap and that due to the force created by such an action and which depends on the winding speed, the sharp angle of the front end cuts and marks the part of the next turn where it overlaps.
