It is often desirable to be able to control a mechanical feed movement. For example, it may be necessary to adjust the weight of material carried by a conveyor in the unit of time. This can be done by controlling the operation of an electric motor which drives a turntable or a second conveyor feeding the first conveyor depending on the. change of position of a part of a weighing device associated with the first conveyor.
It has been proposed to produce, starting from a beam beam of an installation of this kind, a movement serving to adjust the position of the cursor of a potentiometer connected in the supply circuit of a motor driving the material transporter.
The object of the present invention is to provide a device

improved control device intended for the aforementioned function, which is also particularly interesting in the case of an installation, for example a chemical plant, having two or more supply chains conveying different materials to a tank in desired proportions.
In such an installation, the flow rate of all feed chains can be adjusted at once, so as to determine the total amount of material sent to the vessel, using the applied armature voltage. to the different feed motors by a common variable voltage generator, while the flow speeds of the different feed chains can be set separately, for fine tuning, using the COTI- command d excitation of the respective drive motors.
The present invention consists of a device for controlling the speed of a feed device, for example a conveyor or a turntable driven by an electric motor, characterized in that an inductor for controlling the motor of drive is fed according to a. signal derived from a variable reactance provided with a moving part, for example a core, intended to vary the impedance of the reactance and connected to a means serving to measure a fixed part of the quantity of material transported per unit area of the transporter, the output of the variable reactance being preferably amplified,
for example in an amplidyne machine of which a control inductor winding is connected to the variable reactance via a rectifier .. in bridge ..
It goes without saying that a control according to the present invention can be associated with any element of the feed device, such as a turntable or a conveyor, located at any desired point of a feed chain comprising two or more of these. feed device elements.
The invention can be applied, for example, to the control of the speed of rotation of a turntable which receives power.

material in the form of a layer having a more or less constant thickness, and the variable reactance piece can be mechanically connected to a balance beam actuated by the weight of material transported per unit area of a conveyor belt this weight being related to the weight of the material per unit area of the turntable by a constant ratio as long as the ratio between the speeds of the conveyor belt and the turntable remains invariable, the material being transported from the turntable to the tub by the conveyor belt or conveyor.
The speed of the conveyor can also be adjusted when it is desired to considerably modify the quantity of material to be supplied. This adjustment does not form part of the present invention and can be effected by varying the voltage of the current applied, by a common generator, to the respective electric motors which drive the turntable and the conveyor belt.
A control intended for the aforementioned device is described below, by way of example, with reference to the single figure of the appended drawing.
An electric motor 1 drives a turntable 2 receiving a pulverulent material of a well known device not shown in the accompanying drawing, so that there is on the turntable a layer of material 3 having an approximate thickness. - tively uniform and predetermined. When the turntable is in rotation, a wiper 4 rejects the material from the plate onto a conveyor belt 5 which passes over pulleys 6,7 driven by an electric motor (not shown), the armature of which is supplied by the source which feeds the armature of the motor 1. At the other end of the conveyor, the material falls into a tank 20.
At a place S of the conveyor belt 5, a balance beam 8 is arranged so as to measure the weight of material transported per unit of time, this weight being in a certain relation to the weight of the material per unit area of the turntable 2. The flail 8 is mechanically connected to a moving part 9 serving,

for example, to move a core of a variable reactance 10. The coil of the reactance is connected, by terminals a, b, to an alternating current source and, via a bridge rectifier 11, to a control inductor winding 12 of an amplidyne machine 14 provided with another inductor winding 13 receiving a bias voltage which opposes the control signals in the winding 12.
The output of the amplidyne 14 is applied to a motor 15 intended to move the cursor 16a of a potentiometer 16. The latter is connected to a direct current source and supplies the inductor winding 18 of the motor 1. A fixed resistor 19 and a variable resistor 17 are preferably interposed between the potentiometer 16 and the winding 18, to allow manual adjustment.
The arrangement is such that, when the actual flow rate corresponds to that requested, the signal applied through the variable reactance excites the inductor winding 12 of the amplidyne so that the latter produces a field which opposes. and cancels the field produced by the winding 13, so that the amplidyne 14 has a zero output and the motor 15, supplied by the amplidyne, does not turn, the cursor 16a of the potentiometer thus remaining stationary.
If the flow rate differs from the requested value the beam 8 moves, the impedance of the reactance 10 changes, the field due to the signal coming from the reactance and applied to the field winding 12 is no longer balanced. by the field produced by the winding 13, and the amplidyne produces, this time, a desired output so as to do. turning the motor 15 and moving the cursor 16a of the potentiometer, cause an adjustment of the supply of the motor 1 until the desired flow speed is restored, this result being obtained when the signals coming from the resistor again cancel the output of the amplidyne and stop the: ursor 16a of the potentiometer.
Changes can be made without going outside the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
framework of the invention. If an ordinary potentiometer is used, the mean value of the voltage required to supply the inductor of motor 1 may be above or below the voltage applied to it, by a network for example, and, in in this case, the control voltage given by the potentiometer would be used to subtract from the main supply voltage, this control voltage, or to add it to it. The potentiometer 16 can, on the contrary, be at midpoint, so as to add or subtract this voltage from a main supply voltage to which the inductor winding of the motor is connected.
Or, the potentiometer can be replaced by an induction regulator.
