Un inconvénient grave des avertisseurs d'incendie con- nus réside dans la nécessité de prévoir une amenée de cou- rant permanente, c'est-à-dire, ces avertisseurs doivent .être raccordés non seulement à un secteur, mais auxsi à des batteries, afin de pouvoir être mis en action même au cas où le couranb du secteur ferait défaut.L'avertisseur d'incendie selon l'invention élimine cet inconvénient;

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The present invention relates to a fire alarm which forms a complete whole and is electrically actuated, while being entirely independent of the mains or of batteries, with this that, when the temperature of the ambient air, or the concentration of the smoke in the ambient air increases in dangerous proportions, a galvanic element is immediately established, which is used to activate an electric bell or an electric siren, for a relatively long period.
A serious drawback of known fire alarms is the need to provide a permanent current supply, that is to say, these alarms must be connected not only to a mains, but also to batteries. , in order to be able to be put into action even in case the current of the sector is lacking. The fire alarm according to the invention eliminates this drawback;
he

comprises a detector unit sensitive to the action of fire or smoke, as well as a receiver actuated electrically by this unit and consisting of a bell or a siren. This alarm is characterized by a sheath in which the components are housed a chromic acid or dichromate element, an element from which the liquid electrolyte remains separated, as long as there is no triggering of a warning signal, with the anode and the cathode of this element, which are electrically connected to the receiver,
this alarm being furthermore characterized by a mechanism that can be triggered by a detecting member and constituting a source of potential energy by the effect of a servo-controlled system or of an effort amplifier. free at the time of the alert spreads into the space between the anode and the cathode of the element, so that an electric current is established in the latter, serving to excite the receiver. The anode of this element is preferably made of carbon and the cathode of zinc, the electrolyte consisting of a solution of chromic acid. The detector member can be either a strip of bimetal wound in a spiral and of which the free end cooperates with the force amplifier, or a lever ballasted with a spring and which rests, by a point close to one of its ends,
on a device called Esti "cartridge. According to a variant, the deactivation system can be an organ influenced by the release of smoke in the ambient air. When, in the first case, the temperature of the ambient air rises in dangerous proportions, the deviation of the free end of the bimetal strip is amplified by the force amplifier, so as to release a fall weight, which destroys a glass container containing the electrolytic after which the chromic acid solution, thus released, spreads into the space between, on the one hand, the zinc cathode, which takes the shape of a cylinder
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
closed below and, on the other hand, the carbon anode disposed coaxially in this cylinder.
In the second case, the Esti cartridge breaks, under the effect of its internal pressure, when the temperature of the ambient air reaches a determined value, so that the lever now released, and which is ballasted with a spring, tilts by releasing a falling weight subjected to the action of a spring and which breaks the glass container containing the electrolyte.
The appended drawings show two embodiments of the object of the invention. In these drawings:
Fig.l is a vertical sectional view of the first exemplary embodiment.
Fig.2 is a section taken along the line II-II of Fig.l.
Fig. 3 is a section taken along line III-III of Fig.l.

Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of the second embodiment; and
Fig. 6 is a top view corresponding to Fig.5.
The entire device according to Figs 1 to 4 is housed in a sheath 1, preferably made of aluminum, called to be suspended in the room to be protected, near the ceiling. The lower end of this sheath is closed. by a buffer 2 made of an electrical insulating material; while its upper end is closed by a cover 3. and in the cover 3 allow the passage of ambient air 2a denotes a peripheral flange forming part of the plug 2 which comprises a rising collar 4a this flange serving to effectively fix the plug in the sheath 1.
In the collar, open above, of the buffer 2 is crimped a zinc cup 4, also open above and provided with a central recess in which penetrates an annular post 2b of the buffer 2. The post 2b, has a bore central unit intended to accommodate a vertical charcoal stick 5, the lower end of which is fitted into a metal cup 6 through which a metal peg 7 passes.
The peg 7 is anchored by its upper end in the stick 5, passes through the buffer and points downwards, forming a threaded rod 7a which receives a nut 7b intended to clamp a metal thimble 8 joined to an electrical conductor (no A second metal dowel 9, attached to the bottom flange of the zinc bucket 4, passes through the plug 2 and points downwards, forming a threaded rod 9a, the latter carrying a nut 9b intended to tighten a metal thimble 10 joined to a second electrical conductor (not shown). On the upper edge of the side wall of the zinc cup 4 is placed a cylindrical glass vessel 11 provided with a filler opening 11a sealed by fusion, and filled entirely with a solution of chromic acid.
On this container is placed a leather washer which ensures the centering of the container and therefore the edges are pinched in the annular space existing between the container 11 and the inner wall of the sheath 1.
Above the receptacle 11, at a certain distance from the latter, there is a falling weight capable of moving freely in the sheath 1 and provided, on its

This rod pierces a practical central orifice in a disc 16a rigidly fixed to the lower end of a vertical supporting wall 16, the upper end of which is rigidly joined to the cover 3 The cover 3, the wall 16 and the disc 16a can form a very unique. At the lower end of the wall 16 is mounted an elbow lever 17 to tilt on a.
pivot 18 whose release is prevented by a washer 19 fig.2 provided on the rear face of the wall 16. The free end of the horizontal arm 17a of the lever 17 enters the hole 15a of the suspension rod 15 of the drop weight , while the vertical arm 17b of this lever is applied by its free end on a vertical arm 21, pivotally mounted using a pin 23, on the wall 16.
The free upper end of the arm 17b in turn applies to the lower end of a second arm 21 pivotally mounted, using a pin 23, on the wall 16; finally, the free end of the arm 21 rests on a third arm 22 pivotally mounted, using a pin 23 on the wall 16. The three pins 23 are prevented from accidentally disengaging from the wall 16 , thanks to washers 20. The free end of the uppermost vertical arm is shaped so as to constitute an ankle 22a which passes through an orifice provided in a horizontal tongue 24.
The latter is fixed in the free outer end of a spirally wound bimetal strip 25, or may form an integral part of this strip, the inner end of the strip 25 is secured to a pin 26 which passes through an orifice provided in the strip. support wall 16, this dowel being riveted to the wall 16 with the interposition of a washer 27 (fig.2

The constituents of the galvanic element can also be used for an element other than chromic acid.
Likewise, the drop weight 14 may be replaced by a percussion rod weighted with a spring, or the like. Furthermore the force transmitting arms 17,21,22 can be replaced by other suitable means, while the bimetal strip 25 can be replaced by another heat sensitive member.
Such a device can moreover be replaced by a smoke detector, the arrangement being such that, when a maximum smoke concentration, determined in advance, appears in the ambient air, the deformation caused. by the action of smoke is sufficient to release the tab 24. This may for example be of interest where it is prohibited to smoke because of the danger of fire and, in particular of explosion.
In such cases, the bimetal strip 25 can be replaced with a high sensitivity smoke detector, so. that the tab 24 is released for a minimal concentration of smoke in the ambient air, before a fire or explosion can occur or before such a fire has caused a

"Esti cartridge placed in a slot 35a of the support 35.
Such Esti cartridges are commercially available and consist of a glass sphere provided with a melt-sealed filling orifice and filled with a low-boiling or highly volatile liquid, which sphere bursts when the ambient air reaches a temperature determined in advance, such cartridges being able to be supplied for different maximum temperatures. In an annular groove 47a of the drop weight 47, on the one hand, and in an annular groove of the buffer 37, on the other hand, is inserted a coil spring 32, in order to keep the weight under elastic tension. drop 47 and the percussion rod 46.
When the ambient air in the barrel 30 reaches a dangerous temperature, determined in advance, the cartridge 51 bursts under the effect of the internal pressure and the lever 48 is caused to swing against the needles of a. shows, so that the other end of this lever moves away from the head 46a of the percussion rod. Then the percussion rod 46 and the drop weight are thrown violently downwards on the glass bail.on 44 by the effect of the spring 52, and the solution of chromic acid thus released spreads in the space included between the stick 40 and the wall of the zinc cylinder 32, so as to generate an electric current for the actuation of the siren 33.
A single conductor 43 is provided, given that the cylinder
