 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The present invention provides improvements to compositions for the preservation and fireproofing of wood and other combustible materials such as wood fiber boards.

It has already been proposed to form a composition comprising a dichromate, copper sulfate, zinc chloride and boric acid in aqueous solution. A composition of this kind preserves wood and other materials well and satisfactorily against fungal diseases .. attacks by insects, pests and marine organisms, @

but the flame retardant effect of the composition is not satisfactory.

A composition according to the invention is in the form of a powder capable of being dissolved in water beforehand. employment and consists of a dichromate, boric acid ,. mono-ammonium phosphate, a sulphate or a copper chloride ,. zinc or nickel, and a sequestering agent capable, when the composition is in aqueous solution, of preventing any salt from precipitating out of solution.

The sequestering agent can be a salt such as sodium polyphosphate, for example sodium hexametaphosphate.

Examples of compositions according to the invention are given below, all the proportions being expressed by weight: EXAMPLE 1 ,.

The above salts are dissolved in water to produce a solution containing approximately 16% by weight of the salts.

The wood or other combustible material to be treated can then be placed in a cylinder from which air is sucked in so as to create a vacuum. Under these conditions, the solution is sucked into the cylinder until the latter is filled.

Pressure is then applied to the contents of the cylinder so as to ensure a minimum retention of 21/2 pounds 1.1 kg) of composition
