Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

   The present invention relates to alloys.

   Niobium, either substantially pure or mixed with some amount of tantalum as it is found in nature, is resistant to oxidation at room temperature, but its resistance to oxidation drops with increasing temperature.

   According to the present invention, a nio-based alloy which resists oxidation consists of 10 to 40% of one of the elements included in the titanium group, from 2 to 10% of vanadium, from 2 to 20%. % of chromium, from '2 to 5% or from 15 to 20% of iron, from 2 to 5% or from 15 to 20% of cobalt, from 2 to 3% or from 10 to 30% of nickel ,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 7 to 12% zirconium, 1 to 30% molybdenum, 1 to 25% tungsten, 3 to 30% aluminum, 2 to 15% tin, and 7 to 15% tantalum , the remainder being niobium, with or without tantalum, and inevitable impurities.

   An oxidation resistant niobium-based alloy is a binary niobium alloy whose oxidation resistance is better than that of industrially pure niobium at high temperatures.

   The following table gives the results of oxidation rate tests, carried out at 1000 C in air, on binary alloys; niobium according to the invention.
