Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

   L'excès de FeO libre est compris dans la gamme   (4   à 6%) d'oxyde de fer libre spécifiée, en sorte qu'il n'y a pas lieu d'ajouter plus d'oxyde de fer. ;

   The present invention relates to the maintenance of furnace vaults for certain types of industrial furnaces at ultra-high temperatures.

   The method described is practically applicable to various refractory vaults, in particular to current vaults composed of silica bricks of acidic character. The invention is also applicable to vaults composed of magnesite bricks, chromium-magnesite bricks, both of which are basic minerals, or bricks made of neutral chromium-based material.

   One type of furnace for which the present invention has been particularly designed and developed, and which has for a long time lacked satisfactory vault maintenance, is the steel melting hearth furnace. , which has long been used on a large scale and in which internal atmospheric temperatures prevail in the range of 3000 F or 2800 to 3100 F. A comparable but less problematic type of furnace is the well known reverberatory furnace used. in copper smelting plants and in which temperatures of 2800 F are reached. Both of these types of furnaces, although their vaults or domes are made of improved silica bricks, deteriorate rapidly under the effects of extreme temperatures and other destructive factors occurring in the furnace.

   Even in the case where the best mode of maintenance known so far is applied, this deterioration requires frequent suspension and decommissioning of the furnace, to allow replacement, repair or even rebuilding of the furnace. oven wall. This produces per-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 The economics of operation of the furnace are significant and costly, while the output of the plant is severely reduced.

   Under the best repair conditions, production losses due to shutting down a furnace @ for repair purposes can be established by simple calculations, which reveal that approximately 4,200 tonnes of steel production is lost by year and per kiln, these losses can be attributed to a very large extent to the adequacy of known repair systems for kiln vaults.

   The most convenient source of chromite to be used in the process is chromium ore, which contains a major amount of chromium and iron spinel. These ores frequently also contain a certain amount of free iron oxide, which can be taken into consideration in establishing the formula. If the amount of free iron oxide is less than the amount of iron oxide required for the process, an amount of iron oxide will be added to make up for the lack of oxide.

   Chromium ore which contains chromite can and preferably should contain other crystalline combinations, such as the magnesium spinel MgO.A1203, which may be in union or similar crystal line relation with chromite, rather than just being mixed with it; The ore may also contain a small proportion of SiO2, which is a functionally negligible factor, with chromite or chromic oxide being the main or essential characteristic constituent. In addition to FeO, Cr203, MgO and A1203, there is a fifth spinel-forming oxide Fe203 (ferric) which can be combined with other oxides.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

  The oxides of Fe, Mg and Al have fungal functions and these oxides can be associated with, among others, Na2O.

   The composition according to the present invention has, in its most effective form, the following composition:
Chromite 82 to 92%
Free iron oxide (melting agent) 4 to 6%
Binding agent 6 to 12%
Dispersing agent 0.25 to 5% of the binding agent
Suspending agent 1 to 5%
These ingredients may now be referred to more specifically.

   Chromite, which has already been discussed above, is the main processing agent, but this agent itself has not had the ability to adhere to the walls.

   The present invention consists in spraying on the surface of the lining or the roof of a furnace, while the latter is at its highest temperature, thin layers or successive coatings of a new particular cement having the property to adhere to the surface and itself constituting a part of the present invention, this cement then entering into bond with the lining so as to set and form an adherent and hard surface exhibiting an extraordinarily refractory character. The success of the process depends, in part, on the particular properties of the cement thus applied, and the cement presents its particular value because of the novelty, the manner in which it is applied and because of the reactions which it undergoes when. it is thus applied.

   The cement according to the present invention comprises

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 essentially a chromium ore comprising, as an essential constituent, a combination of chromic oxide Cr203 with iron oxide. Gold 203 is preferably; used in the form incorporated in the mineral chromite which constitutes a natural spinel of the FeO form. Cr203 and it is this spinel which gives the coating its real resistance value. In this spinel, the chromic oxide and the iron oxide are combined in the proportions of 68% and 32%.

   The cement according to the invention requires a proportion of iron oxide greater than this proportion.

  The percentage of iron oxide contained in the material should be about 5% more than the amount sufficient to form the spinel crystal, this excess preferably being 4 to 6%. This excess may be referred to as a "free oxide" herein.

   The invention thus relates to a process for forming a coating on the refractory surfaces exposed to the flames of a high temperature furnace, with a view to preventing the progressive destructive degradation of these surfaces while the furnace is in service, said process comprising the steps of mixing a fine powdered chromium ore composition with water to form a cement mortar, the composition predominantly comprising chromite which is temperature insensitive operation of the furnace and which determines the thermal resistance properties of the final surfaces of the furnace, the chromium ore composition containing more than enough iron oxide to form an iron chromium spinel, the free iron oxide being present in a proportion of between 4% and 6% and serving as a fluxing agent,

   spraying the cement mortar under high pressure and gradually on

 surfaces exposed to the flame of the furnace while the furnace is in use so as to form a heat resistant coating thereon, and to use the heat of the furnace first to activate the flux and to produce a bond between the chromium ore composition and the furnace surfaces as the coating gradually forms by the spraying operation and thereafter to cause the coating to set and harden after bonding with the oven surfaces and to convert the liner into a strong integrated film trap, which protects the oven surfaces from destructive degradation.

     The invention also relates to a composition of heat-resistant chromium ore, intended to be mixed and applied in the form of a mortar or a slurry on refractory surfaces exposed to the flame. of a high temperature furnace while the furnace is in service, the composition in question being constituted by a mixture of a chromium mineran and a small quantity (ranging, for example, between 1% and 6%) a suspending agent, such as a colloidal clay, all the ingredients being finely ground, the chromium ore composition comprising essential, the element of chromite and containing more than enough iron oxide to form a spinel of iron and chrome,

   the free iron oxide content being between 4% and 6%.

   The melting agent, which has already been discussed
 EMI5.1
 above, is constituted per.la.f 1. -; "ydes-" ferrëàx et = others -; = cex-t-i being; dÈ.ns. chromium mineai'de which chromite has also been obtained or being added to the mixture.

   The binding agent consists of one or more

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 common or other refractory binders, such as sodium silicates, which may in the cement formulation be in an amount of 6% or less, the preferred percentage being 8, and generally , about 6 to 12%. Its sodium: silicate ratio can be about 1: 2 and is preferably set at about 1 to 1.9, this small difference having the effect of increasing the breaking strength of the arch by up to 50%. treated, the binding agent having the effect, when the coating is applied, of initially holding the cement on the surface of the arch until chemical bonding is achieved.

   A particular sodium silicate, namely that of the formula Na2O 1.9 SiO2, is very advantageous and appears to be new for the purpose; other binders which can be used are those of formula: Na20.2Si02 and Na20.

  3.22 / Si02.

   The dispersing agent which is preferably added may be one of the following types. Thus, the dispersing agent may be (a) one of the common dispersing agents or, preferably, (b) a metallic salt of amylsulfonic acid or (c) a sulfurized petroleum product and / or a petroleum product. salt of it. This agent can be used as a premix or in conjunction with the above chemical binder. The amount of dispersing agent may be small and be, for example, about 2% or 0.25 to 5.00% of the amount of binder. The presence of the dispersing agent provides improved binding action, the dispersing agent acting to make the binder more adhesive and more consistent and to aid in obtaining a more effective coating layer on the surface of the coating. vaulted.

   A percentage of dispersing agent higher than that indicated does not offer any appreciable advantage.

   The suspending agent is usually a fine or colloidal refractory clay, initially dry, but it can also be an organic suspending agent, such as carboxymethyl cellulose or equivalent compounds. This agent can be added in a small proportion ;, for example in an amount of about 2% or more than 2% of the total composition or in proportions of between 1% and 5 or 6%, higher percentages being of no use. corresponding.

   The present invention is based on the discovery that, in order to obtain the best results, the correct proportions of the components in the chemical composition of the cement or refractory material must be adjusted or modified according to certain factors, such as, first, the temperature of the surface of the vault when the cement is applied and, second, the highest temperature to which the refractory coating will be subjected under the operating conditions.

   To prepare the cement, the ingredients are. finely powdered and thoroughly mixed in desired proportions. - Sufficient water is then added to obtain the desired fluidity, so that the density of the product is approximately 2.2 to 2.6. The digestion of the mortar is favored if it is heated.

   The treatment of the furnace vault can be carried out using conventional apparatus, such as spray guns, the principles of which have since been known.

   When this cement composition is brought into contact with silica bricks or other refractory bricks at high operating temperatures, free iron oxide and binding agents cause localized and limited melting. This fusion develops to a strongly gelatinous liquid state, but only until the changing ratio of free metal oxides to silica becomes such that solidification occurs on the arch surface. A rearrangement of the components then takes place and this setting or solidification is the final phase of the reaction, a chemical or sintered bond being formed by fusion between the silica bricks and the applied refractory coating containing the chromite and the other spinel components of the pulverized cement.

   As an example of the use of a commercial chromium ore serving as a base for the refractory cement according to the invention, an ore of the following composition can be considered:
Sample A
 EMI8.1

<tb> Cr203 <SEP> 44.5 <SEP>% <SEP>

<tb>
<tb> A1203 <SEP> 14.6 <SEP>%
<tb>
<tb>
<tb> other <SEP> products <SEP> 4.9 <SEP>%
<tb>

The formation of a spinel with 44.5 parts of Cr2O3 requires the binding of 20.9 parts of FeO, leaving 4.5 parts of free FeO.

   The excess of free FeO is within the range (4-6%) of free iron oxide specified, so that no more iron oxide needs to be added. ;
As another example of used chromium ore.

 sand, we can consider the following: Sample B
 EMI9.1

<tb> Cr293 <SEP> 45.4%
<tb> Fe0 <SEP> 15.1 <SEP>%
<tb>
<tb> Mg0 <SEP> 13.65
<tb>
<tb> A1203 <SEP> 13.8%
<tb>
<tb> other <SEP> products <SEP> 12.1 <SEP>% <SEP>
<tb>

The formation of a chromium spinel with 45.4 parts of Cr2O3 would require 21.4 parts of FeO. So 6.3 parts of FeO are missing to form the spinel and therefore there is no free iron oxide.

   A cement using this source of chromite therefore requires 6.3 parts of FeO to complete the spin, as well as 4 to 6 parts of FeO to serve as free iron oxy. In all, therefore, 10.3 to 12.3 parts of FeO must be added.

   A chromium ore can have variable compositions and, ignoring the SiO2 which may be incidentally present, the proportions of the various metal oxides can be between the following values, in parts or percentages:
