The present invention relates to a locking mechanism of the barrel type rotating in a cylinder, comprising pins sliding radially in the cylinder against the action of a spring, pistons sliding radially in the barrel against the action of the pins, and a key actuating said pistons when it is introduced into the barrel.
This mechanism is characterized in that the shank of the key has,
at its periphery, housings flared on their edge, in which the rods of said pistons engage when the key is fully inserted into the barrel, the distribution of said housings at the periphery of the shank of the key corresponding to that of the pistons in the barrel wall and their depth depending on the length of the piston rods, the whole so that the piston heads are flush with the outer surface of the barrel pushing the pins flush with the inner surface of the cylinder when the key is inserted fully into the barrel, so as to allow the barrel to rotate in the cylinder.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the present invention as well as two variants.
Fig. 1 is an axial sectional view of this embodiment.
Fig. 2 is a view, similar to FIG. 1, of the first variant.
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the second variant.
The locking mechanism shown in fig. 1 comprises a cylinder 1 provided with four peripheral grooves 2 formed on its outer wall in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder. In each of these grooves is made, on the other hand, a radial cylindrical orifice 3, perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder, in which is introduced a pin 4 which tends to protrude inside the cylinder under the action of a peripheral spring 5 housed in each of the grooves 2. A barrel 6 is mounted with gentle friction inside the cylinder and has radial cylindrical orifices 7 made perpendicular to the axis of the barrel so as to coincide with the orifices 3 of the cylinder in a given position that the barrel can occupy, when it is rotated around its axis inside the cylinder.
The orifices 7 of the barrel have a larger diameter on the outer wall of the barrel than on its internal wall so as to form a shoulder against which the heads of pistons 8 bear, the rod 9 of which protrudes inside the barrel. When ports 3 of cylinder 1 and ports 7 of barrel 6 are
in position of coincidence, the pins 4 partially penetrate into the orifices 7 of the barrel under the action of the springs 5 and thus prevent any rotation of the barrel 6 inside the cylinder 1. The barrel 6 has, on the other hand,
at its front part, a peripheral bearing surface 10 in which is made a notch 11 intended to guide a key 12 in a determined position inside the barrel, in which the latter can rotate in the cylinder,
a tab 13 which the key 12 has engaging in the notch 11. The rod
14 of the key has, at its periphery, housings 15 flared on their edge, in which the rods 9 of the pistons engage when the key is inserted
fully into the barrel 6. The depth of the housings 15 depends on the length of the rods 9 of the pistons and is such that when the rods 9 are engaged in the housings 15 of the rod 14., of the key 12, the heads of the pistons are flush with the outer surface of the barrel by pushing back the pins 4 flush with the internal surface of the cylinder. At this time, the barrel 6 will turn freely inside the cylinder 1 with the key, and will for example make it possible to lock or unlock a lock whose bolt is driven by the stud 16 of the cylinder.
In order to increase the possibilities of the combination of the mechanism,
it is possible to increase the number of pistons and pins mounted in the walls of the barrel and the cylinder as well as the number of the housings 15 of the key and there is shown, by way of example, in FIG. 2, a mechanism of locking comprising eight piston-cylinder elements arranged in groups of four along generatrices of the barrel and the cylinder. It goes without saying that instead of being thus arranged in alignment, these elements could be arranged in any other way, for example in a helical manner, in a quincone, etc.
The lumen of the barrel is usually cylindrical, and in this case the shank of the key is also cylindrical. But, they could have in cross section an oval shape or any other shape, and there is shown in Figure 3 a locking mechanism in which the barrel lumen and the key have a semi-cylindrical shape. In these cases, it is no longer necessary to provide a notch 11 in the barrel, or to provide the key with a corresponding tab 13.
