Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

   La présente invention a ainsi pour buts de procurer : de nouveaux procédés pour la purification de l'oxygène par extraction des impuretés combustibles et-autres de l'oxygène après avoir utilisé la teneur en ozone de l'oxygène avant de renvoyer l'oxygène purifié à   l'ozonateur;   de nouveaux procédés dans lesquels on extrait les impuretés combusti- bles du courant d'oxygène en soumettant le courant d'oxygène à des catalyseurs appropriés à des températures peu élevées dans la gamme de 40 à   300 C;   de nouveaux procédés dans lesquels on puisse introduire des quantités limitées d'ozone   dans.le   courant d'oxygène avant de le soumettre à une purifica- tion catalytique pour réduire les températures auxquelles la purification cataly- tique a lieu;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

   <Desc / Clms Page number 1>

   The present invention relates to the purification of oxygen and in particular to methods for the purification of oxygen prior to its admission to an ozonator. More specifically, the invention relates to processes for the purification of oxygen prior to its admission to an ozonator in which oxygen from a reactor which utilizes the ozone content of oxygen is purified and then returned to the oxygenator. ozonator.

   Processes for the catalytic purification of oxygen as well as certain catalysts for use in these processes are well known. These processes remove combustible impurities from oxygen by converting the impurities to water and carbon dioxide in the presence of catalysts at relatively low temperatures of about 300 C and preferably in the approximate range of 250 to 350 C.

   The present invention uses this concept in part in a process for purifying oxygen after removing ozone therefrom before returning it to the ozonator for further ozone production. By applying the process of the present invention, unwanted impurities contained in the oxygen stream are removed and the efficiency of the ozonator is materially increased.

   Processes are known for the catalytic purification of oxygen at temperatures as low as 40 ° C. in which stoichiometric amounts of O 3 are used and amounts less than stoichiometric amounts are added, which can be used at temperatures approximately as well. low than 80 ° C to oxygen prior to contacting the catalyst so as to substantially reduce temperatures for catalytic oxygen purification. This concept can be used in the processes of the present invention as an optional phase to aid in the removal of combustible impurities from the oxygen stream before returning it to the ozonator.

   The invention also aims to optionally return the purified oxygen just prior to its admission to the ozonator, to the oxygen stream prior to its admission to the catalytic combustor to dilute the gas stream so that this stream or notably below the combustible limit of the organic matter contained therein.

   The present invention thus aims to provide: new methods for the purification of oxygen by extraction of combustible and other impurities from oxygen after using the ozone content of the oxygen before returning the purified oxygen with the ozonator; new processes in which combustible impurities are removed from the oxygen stream by subjecting the oxygen stream to suitable catalysts at low temperatures in the range 40 to 300 ° C; new processes in which limited amounts of ozone can be introduced into the oxygen stream before subjecting it to catalytic purification to reduce the temperatures at which catalytic purification takes place;

   new processes in which the purified oxygen can be returned in part to the impure oxygen stream before it is introduced into the catalytic purification phase, so as to dilute the gas stream below the combustible limit organic matter contained therein; new methods in which one can introduce preparative oxygen into the recycled oxygen at any desired point preferably before its introduction into the ozonator, depending on the impurities found in the preparative oxygen.

   Other objects of the present invention will emerge from the following description of a representative embodiment.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The processes of the present invention can be carried out mechanically in different ways and be subdivided into different phases without departing from the scope of the present invention. A representative embodiment of such a method is described below by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, but it is clear that the invention is not limited thereto and that numerous changes and modifications. can be brought there without going outside its framework.

   In the accompanying drawing which is a block diagram of a process according to the present invention, a suitable ozonator, preferably of the electric discharge type, is indicated at 10. The gas discharge from the ozonator 10 comprising a stream of oxygen with ozone and optionally other inert gases is supplied through line 11 to reactor 12 where the ozone contained in the stream of oxygen is used wholly or in part in a process. - suitable die requiring ozone.

   The ozone-free oxygen stream is entrained from the reactor 12 through line 13 and is introduced into a washer and liquid sealer 14. The primary function of the washer and liquid sealer 14 is to prevent a leak. possible ignition of the oxygen but the scrubber 14 can also be used to extract certain impurities from the oxygen stream.

  The scrubber 14 can be any of the known devices for removing impurities from the oxygen stream such as baffles, mist and mist removing devices, electrostatic precipitators, and the like.

   From the scrubber and liquid sealer 14 the stream of oxygen, from which part of the organic impurities has been removed, is carried through a pipe 15 to a suitable device for controlling the temperature of the oxygen leaving the reactor. 12 at an elevated temperature, this device being in this case a heater 16 in which the temperature of the oxygen stream is adjusted up to the value which should normally be found in the next catalytic purification phase, close to approximately 40 to 300 C or more, if desired.

   The heated oxygen stream is then supplied from heater 16 through line 17 to catalytic combustor 18 where oxygen and combustible impurities are subjected to catalytic purification to convert combustible impurities to carbon dioxide and carbon. water according to the known methods mentioned above for the catalytic purification of oxygen and the catalysts for these methods.

   In element 18, the stream of oxygen and combustible impurities are passed over and in contact with a supported catalyst of transition metals or metal oxides or activated alumina at temperatures within the range mentioned above. from 40 to 300 C or more, a suitable metal oxide forming a catalyst being a mixture of MnO 2: Cu0, CO 2 O 3 and Ag 2 O supported on activated alumina or on another suitable support; a mixture of metal oxide of chromium, manganese and supported copper; a mixture of cerium, uranium and supported copper; or a supported platinum catalyst.

   The oxygen stream with its organic impurities converted to carbon dioxide and water is then supplied from element 18 through line 19 to a suitable cooler 20 and from cooler 20 through line 21 to a scrubber 22 which can be operated. whether or not used depending on the presence of contaminating substances other than combustible substances, for example CO 2 in the oxygen stream and their concentration. From scrubber 22, the oxygen stream is driven through line 23 to compressor 24 which circulates them through the recycle purifier process.

   A line 25 carries the oxygen stream from compressor 24 to cooler 26 where the temperature of the oxygen is reduced to help remove water either by condensing some of the moisture or by increasing the efficiency of the dehydrator that follows in the circuit. A line 27 connects the cooler 26 to the dehydrator 28. The dehydrator 28 is of any suitable type such as a descriptor of the type.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 A solid desiccant layer or a refrigeration element for lowering the freezing point of the oxygen stream to about -40 F (-40 C) or less.

   The stream of oxygen, dried and free of contaminants, is then carried through line 29 to an ozonator 10 which produces ozone and the purification cycle described above is repeated.

   As mentioned above, it may be desirable to dilute the stream of oxygen prior to its admission to the catalytic combustor 18 so that it is diluted below the combustible limit for organic impurities contained in it. the flow of oxygen. To this end, a pipe 30 connects the pipes 25 and 15 and the quantity of purified oxygen passing through the pipe 30 is regulated by an appropriate valve 31.

   Continuous recycling of the oxygen stream from reactor 12 through the various phases of the purification process described above to return it to the ozonator 10 reduces the amount of oxygen contained in the oxygen stream and requires oxygen. of preparation. If the preparative oxygen contains combustible impurities, excess moisture or the equivalent, it may be admitted into the cycle at a point where it will be treated to remove the unwanted impurities it contains, a point of this genus being shown at the connection of line 33 with line 13 to subject the preparative oxygen to the entire purification process.

   The known methods mentioned above describe the effect of ozone on the temperatures required in element 18. Stoichiometric amounts of ozone based on the impurities contained in the oxygen substantially reduce reaction temperatures and thus increase the reaction temperature. element efficiency 18.

  Ozone can be introduced into the purification process shown in the drawing with the aid of line 34 which opens into line 17.

   It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the present invention provides novel methods for the purification of oxygen which accomplish all of the objects described above.

   It is clear that the present invention is not limited to the foregoing description but that numerous changes and modifications can be made to it without departing from its scope.
