EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

Novel disubstituted anilides and selective herbicidal compositions.
This invention relates to novel chemical compounds, processes for preparing such compounds, as well as selective herbicidal compositions which contain these compounds. It relates more particularly to new disubstituted anilides and to selective herbicidal compositions which contain these anilides.
The anilides of this invention are represented by the formula:
EMI1.1
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
where R represents a saturated alkyl group comprising from 1 to 8 carbon atoms and X and Y represent a chlorine atom or a methyl group, and may be the same or different.
The anilides of this invention can be prepared by reacting a suitable disubstituted aniline with an acyl halide in the presence of an acid acceptor. This reaction can be represented by the following equation:
EMI2.1
where R, X and Y have the meaning defined above.
The disubstituted aniline and the acyl chloride are reacted in approximately stoichiometric proportion. The reaction is easy and quick and is usually completed within a few hours.
The reaction is generally carried out in an organic solvent such as benzene, xylene, ethyl ether, etc., in the presence of an acid acceptor such as triethylamine, sodium carbonate, etc. ...
At the start of the reaction, the acyl chloride is slowly added to the dissolved disubstituted aniline. The temperature of the reaction mixture rises during the addition of the acid chloride.
The maximum temperature which is generally used is the reflux temperature of the solvent employed.
When the reaction is complete, the desired product can be isolated in various ways. Water can be added to the reaction mixture and the mixture is stirred well. The organic phase can then be separated, concentrated and the product is isolated by filtration.
On the other hand, the reaction mixture can be cooled, and dilute hydrochloric acid can be added thereto while stirring. The organic phase is decanted and the aqueous phase is extracted.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
te several times with a solvent: the organic extracts are combined with the main organic phase. This organic phase is then dried over potassium carbonate and concentrated. The desired product is obtained from its concentrated solution by crystallization.
It is also possible, after addition of the acyl chloride, to add a larger quantity of solvent and bring the reaction mixture to reflux temperature for a short time, then to cool it. Dilute hydrochloric acid is then added and the mixture is stirred and heated. The acidic aqueous phase is decanted and hot water is added to the reaction mixture while maintaining a high temperature, preferably around 65 ° C. The organic phase is then washed with more water. Water-organic solvent azeotrope is distilled until the distillate no longer contains organic solvent (stripping with steam). The residue is poured onto crushed ice and the product solidifies and can then be isolated by filtration.
The reaction mixture can also be cooled in ice and filtered to remove the acid acceptor and its salt.
The filtrate is then concentrated and cooled and the product is isolated by further filtration.
Finally, an additional amount of solvent can be added to the reaction mixture and then the mixture washed with dilute hydrochloric acid solution. The acidic aqueous washing phase is decanted and the solvent is distilled off under reduced pressure.
The product is then isolated from the residue.
The methods which have just been described for isolating the desired product from the reaction mixture are given only by way of example and it is clear that one can imagine others.
The following examples, also given to illustrate the invention, describe the processes for the preparation of some of the compounds of this invention.

Preparation of N- -c oro- -met 1 he 1 -2-meth 1 ro namide.
76 parts of 2-methyl-propanoyl chloride are slowly added to a stirred mixture of 101 parts of 3-chloro-4-methyl-aniline and 72 parts of triethylamine in 4000 parts of ethyl ether. The reaction is exothermic and the temperature of the mixture rises rapidly to boiling. Almost immediately after the start of the addition of the acid chloride, a solid settles and the solution turns yellow. After 30 minutes at reflux temperature, the mixture is cooled in ice and filtered, which gives 115 parts of triethylamine hydrochloride. The filtrate is reduced by concentration to a small volume (about 1 tenth of the initial volume), cooled and filtered, which isolates 140 parts of a solid which melts at 145- C-148 C.
By recrystallization from methanol, 120 parts of a solid are obtained.

On reading the above table, it can be seen that this herbicide exhibits high toxicity for plants such as lettuce, alfalfa and cucumbers, for concentrations which do not exceed 1.1 kg per hectare. This product is practically non-toxic to other plants such as cotton and oats at the same concentration, but is highly toxic at concentrations of about 2.2 kg per hectare.
It has no effect on plants such as corn, carrots and celery, even at the lowest concentrations.

higher, while being extremely toxin for parasitic plants such as mustard, finger millet and crow's feet at concentrations of only 1.1 kg per hectare.
The disubstituted anilides of this invention can be used as a pre-emergent treatment or as a post-emergent treatment. In the case of a post-emergent treatment, the herbicide will be dispersed on the growing plants. In the case of a pre-emergent treatment, the herbicide will be dispersed on the soil, usually on the seeded soil, before the plants appear; in general this treatment is done at the time of sowing. The notion of "plant life" treatment here also designates pre-treatment. emerging than post-emergent treatments.
The disubstituted anilides can be used for the treatment of plant life by one or other of the usual methods, for example in the form of an emulsion or of an aqueous suspension of a wettable powder.
Stable concentrates of the herbicide for use in preparing the aqueous emulsions can be made by, for example, mixing 5 to 75 parts by weight of the anilide with 95 to 25 parts of a solvent such as xylene, cyclohexanone , etc ... and about 1 to 15 parts of a suitable emulsifying agent. At the time of use, this concentrate can be dispersed in about 100 to 1000 parts of water to give an emulsion which can be sprayed as is. A preferred spray formulation which is used comprises a 20% by weight solution of the active ingredient in xylene.
When the anilide is to be used as a wettable powder, 10 to 90 parts by weight of the herbicide are mixed with 90 to 10 parts of a powder such as kaolin and with about 1 to 10 parts of the herbicide. 'a surfactant. The powder can then be dispersed in approximately 100 to 1000 parts of water shortly before use and the suspension thus obtained can be applied by spraying.
