<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
L'invention est décrite en détail ci-après avec les dessins ci-joints à l'appui, sur lesquels; la figure 1 est un diagramme schématique d'une installation de préparation du noir de carbone convenant à l'introduction de l'affaiblisseur soit en le mélangeant au préalable avec l'hydrocarbure initial, soit en le mé- langeant avec le fluide de pulvérisation, soit en l'ajou- tant à l'huile combustible ou au fluide de pulvérisation de l'huile combustible, soit en l'injectant séparément dans la chambre du four; la figure 2 est un graphique faisant ressortir l'efficacité d'un affaiblisseur d'hydroxyde de sodium en proportions variables dans le fluide de pulvérisation de l'hydrocarbure initial par rapport à la variation du pouvoir d'absorption de l'huile et de l'intensité de co- loration du noir de carbone obtenu;

Solution, caustique d'injection = 37,6 g/l d'eau.
<Desc/Clms Page number 22>

Solution choisie = 30 g d'affaiblisseur par litre d'eau.

Process for the manufacture of carbon black * la. present invention relates to the manufacture of carbon black and more particularly to an improved process for the manufacture of furnace carbon black, of the type which consists in introducing a fluid hydrocarbon called hereinafter "initial hydrocarbon ** into the chamber of a heated furnace at high temperature, in which it decomposes by heat at least in part to form carbon black in gaseous suspension.
Operations of this general type are known and very widely carried out in the industry by choosing various types of raw material hydrocarbons.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Some of it. are described, for example, in U.S. Patents Nos. 2,768,067 of October 23, 1956, Nos. 2,779,665 of January 29, 1957, and Nos. 2,851,337 of September 9, 1958.
The main source of black carbon has for many years been natural gas, largely because of the abundance of natural gas available at relatively low cost. Due to its characteristic fineness and low oil absorption capacity, carbon black prepared from natural gas is ideally suited for the preparation of sizes, lacquers, inks, etc. It has also been used extensively in the preparation of rubber mixtures and has given excellent results, particularly in the preparation of natural rubber mixtures.
The absorptive power of the oil of a carbon black depends normally and mainly on the nature of the surface of the aggregate, which itself depends on the average diameter of the black particles. However, as a result of previous studies of the properties of carbon black, it has been found that some of them, and in particular some kiln blacks, behave abnormally because their oil absorption power is greater than baaea forecasts on the average size of their particles and on the contact surface of the aggregate.
It has been found under the electron microscope that this special behavior is due to the fact that some of the carbon particles cross-form, forming chains or groups. It has been found in some cases that the carbon particles are joined together by rods
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of carbon. This cross-linking has been called a 'cross-chain structure * or more simply -structure-. The oil absorbency of a particulate carbon black of a gorsifier within certain limits was chosen as a test and structural test.
When we began to use synthetic rubber of the styrene-butadiene type, it was found that it was necessary to choose carbon blacks of relatively strong structure to be mixed with the synthetic rubber in order to strengthen it under the best conditions. . As a result, strong structure furnace carbon blacks prepared from oils have been highly sought after, as they themselves possess relatively strong structural characteristics. It has been learned that not only are obtained with heavy aromatic tars and tar residues carbon blacks having strong structural characteristics, but also that they are obtained with exceptional yield.
Due to the current applications of synthetic rubber and the high current price of natural gas, as well as the excellent carbon black yield obtained from these aromatic tars, the use of these products has become widely used. in industry as the initial hydrocarbon of the kiln process.
But when these strong structured carbon blacks prepared from aromatic tars and the like are mixed with natural rubber, the results are not as good as with normal or weakly structured blacks prepared from gas.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
natural or oil-enriched gas. Strong structural carbon blacks in admixture with natural rubber tend to decrease the tensile strength of the composition to some extent and scorch the rubber severely during routine processing.
If we consider that natural rubber still represents 0% of world rubber consumption, we can easily see the importance of the preparation of a carbon black of normal structure. Likewise, it is also generally preferred in the paint and ink industry to choose carbon blacks of low structure or of normal structure, since they allow a higher load of pigment to be incorporated into the vehicles chosen.
More recently, methods have been discovered which make it possible to choose carbon blacks of lower structure to be mixed with the synthetic rubber, while maintaining a satisfactory reinforcement, and still providing the advantage of improving the hysteresis properties resulting from reducing the amount of heat released in the rubber. It is known that carbon blacks with a stronger structure decrease the rebound power of natural and synthetic rubbers, although this effect is a little more marked in natural rubber. Automobile tires made of rubber compounds in which the carbon black has a moderate or weak structure provide a smoother and less rough ride than ordinary tires.
Carbon blacks of weak or moderate structure are therefore
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
now sought to mix with synthetic rubber, as well as natural rubber.
It follows from the aforementioned reasons that carbon blacks of normal structure, such as those obtained from natural gas and oil-enriched gas, are presently increasingly in demand. But the price of natural gas, which continues to rise and the low efficiency of the preparation processes using natural gas, do not make the choice profitable.
The main object of the invention therefore consists in a process which makes it possible to prepare carbon blacks of low structure or of normal structure at low cost and with high yield from aromatic residues of high molecular weight and of Tar of common use in the preparation of blacks of strong structure.
Another object of the invention consists in a means which makes it possible to modify the operation of the furnaces in which the initial hydrocarbon consists of tars and aromatic tar residues so as to be able to adjust the structure of the black obtained and to vary it independently of special characteristics of the initial hydrocarbon.
In general, during these operations in the furnace in which the initial hydrocarbon consists of oil, the operating conditions, such as the relative proportions of air and gas, flow rate, etc., are adjusted so as to obtain the particles of the desired size, the oil absorption characteristics of the product cannot be independently adjusted

<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
only between relatively narrow limits. A known means of adjusting the absorption power of the oil between certain limits consists in the choice of the charge, that is to say of the initial hydrocarbon. The initial paraffinic type hydrocarbon, in the gas or oil state, tends to form carbon blacks with normal oil absorption characteristics for particles of a given average diameter.
But, as already said, the yield and the production rate are relatively low.
Another disadvantage which has been observed with aromatic tars or their residues as the initial hydrocarbon in the furnace process consists in the variation in the characteristics of the tars or residues which are found in commerce. For example one of these aromatic residues which serves to a large extent as the initial hydrocarbon is obtained by cracking a recycle feed from a catalytic cracking of petroleum in the preparation of motor fuel, and its characteristics depend on the conditions of the refining. . It has been found that these variations in the quality of the residue cause the structural characteristics of the carbon black prepared with this residue to vary.
Another object of the invention therefore consists in a means which makes it possible to adjust and maintain constant the structural or oil absorption characteristics of the carbon black, whatever the variations in the quality of the initial hydrocarbon or of vary them between extended limits regardless of the special characteristics of the initial aromatic hydrocarbon
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
and regardless of the particle size of the carbon black obtained.
These characteristics and other advantages are obtained by the invention, as will be seen below.

hydrocarbon (in1tiàl such as tars or aromatic residues of high molecular weight, by injecting into the chamber of the furnace mixed with the initial pulverized hydrocarbon a small proportion of an additive, that is to say of a material other than the air, oxygen, water or a hydrocarbon.
More specifically, it has been found that it is possible to decrease or attenuate the structural characteristics of carbon black under surprising conditions by means of an additive described in detail below and referred to as the "carbon reducer. carbon black structure "or for short" weakener "and to adjust and determine the structural characteristic of the carbon black thus prepared by varying the proportion and nature of the weakener incorporated in the initial sprayed hydrocarbon.
It has further been found that it is possible to adjust and keep constant the oil absorption or structural characteristics of the prepared carbon black regardless of the variations in quality of the initial tar or aromatic hydrocarbon residue, by making vary the proportion of the attenuator incorporated

sprayed oil *.
Although it is preferred at the present time to introduce the attenuator into the chamber of the furnace mixed with the initial pulverized hydrocarbon, as has just been said, it is also possible to introduce it in another way into the chamber. reaction zone, that is, in the area of the furnace chaser where the initial hydrocarbon begins to decompose, releasing carbon particles. For example, it can be introduced mixed with the gases of the blown flame or injected separately into the chamber of the furnace in this zone or upstream of it.
The invention based on the facts thus newly discovered consists of improvements to the method of operating carbon black furnaces as described above, which consist in choosing an initial hydrocarbon such as a tar. aromatic hydrocarbon of high molecular weight or a residue of oil, coal tar or the like, and injecting into the furnace chamber finely divided oil droplets in the form of rain, and determining or adjusting the characteristic absorption of oil or the structure of carbon black obtained by introducing an alkali metal compound into the area of the furnace chamber in which the initial hydrocarbon decomposes to carbon black and adjusting or varying the proportion or the nature of the attenuator thus chosen.

The weakener can then be incorporated into the initial hydrocarbon before passing it through the spray nozzle or anyway during the spraying operation.
According to the method currently applied preferably and which consists in injecting into the chamber of the furnace the initial hydrocarbon sprayed with a gas, it is possible
EMI9.3
incorporate the weakening into the initial hydrocarbon as mentioned, or premix it with the spray fluid. The best way to introduce the attenuator depends to some extent on the solubility characteristics of the chosen attenuator. Whether the spray fluid is saturated or superheated water vapor, the weakener is preferably mixed with the vapor just before it enters the spray injector.
If the chosen weakener is water soluble, it is advantageous to mix with the steam a heated aqueous solution of the weakener so as to vaporize the water from the solution upon contacting the steam.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
If the chosen attenuator is oil soluble, it is generally more advantageous to mix it with the initial hydrocarbon passing through the spray injector, for example by preparing a concentrate of the attenuator in the ethnile and introducing this concentrate with a gifted flow in the inlet pipe of the initial hydrocarbon. This latter process makes it possible to regulate and determine the structure of the carbon black prepared by varying the proportion of the concentrate loaded into the inlet pipe of the initial hydrocarbon.
According to another variant of the invention, a continuous stream of hot water is passed through the spray injector at a pressure greater than atmospheric pressure, at a temperature greater than its boiling point at the pressure existing in the furnace chamber, and the hot water stream alone or in combination with steam is mixed with the initial hydrocarbon stream entering the spray injector. By decreasing the pressure of the mixture as it enters the oven chamber, the hot water vaporizes in the steam, causing spraying.
By operating in this way, the weakener can be pre-mixed with hot water or with the initial hydrocarbon.
When operating by separately burning a liquid hydrocarbon to form blast flame gases, as described for example in U.S. Pat. No. 2,918,353 of December 22, 1959, by atomizing using spray fluid
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
the liquid hydrocarbon in the combustion chamber, it may be advantageous to premix the additive with the liquid hydrocarbon fuel or with the spray fluid.
De pins, as has already been said, when any of these methods is applied to the oven, the weakener is separately injected into the chamber of the oven or into the sound system of this chamber in which the The initial hydrocarbon begins to decompose, either in an area of the upstream chamber, so as to entrain the weakener into the reaction zone by the hot gases from the furnace.
During all these operations, in which the initial hydrocarbon or fuel consists of a heavy tar-like product, it is common practice to preheat the hydrocarbon to make it more fluid and to spray it under better conditions.
In general, the hydrocarbon is preheated to a temperature of 93 to 361 ° C with care being taken to prevent it from coking in the oil inlet pipe and in the spray nozzle. It should of course be understood that this preheating of the hydrocarbons forms part of the invention when it is necessary.
The additives which are particularly effective weakeners of the structure of the carbon black according to the invention are compounds of the alkali metals.
Particularly advantageous results are obtained by choosing the hydroxides or the inorganic salts of these metals. It is known that these compounds decompose and that their metallic element ionizes at the temperature of
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
furnace in which the hydrocarbons decompose into carbon black, that is, from 1200 to 1650 C.
Although it is not proposed to make the effectiveness of the weakeners depend on the invention on any theory, it is now assumed that the weakening of the structure of carbon black is due in some way the presence of alkali metal ions in the reaction zone in which the carbon particles are formed. Therefore, the anionic element of the alkali metal compound does not appear to be of paramount importance with respect to the structure of carbon black. This theory is confirmed by the results obtained during numerous tests.
It has been found that among these alkali metal compounds, those which are particularly effective are the hydroxides and salts of sodium, potassium, cesium and rubidium. Although the hydroxide and the lithium salts can also be chosen according to the invention, it has been found that they are somewhat less effective in the process of the invention than those of the other alkali metals.
The proportion of the attenuator to be added is very variable and the most suitable one depends mainly on the special characteristics of the initial hydrocarbon chosen, on the structural characteristics which one wishes to obtain in the carbon mixture and on the efficiency of the mixture. 'chosen attenuator. The proportions which are most suitable under any series of conditions are easily determined by simple tests, for example by increasing the proportion until the structural characteristic of the carbon black

..prepared has decreased and reached the desired value.
The invention is described in detail below with the accompanying drawings, in which; Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of an installation for preparing carbon black suitable for the introduction of the attenuator either by mixing it beforehand with the initial hydrocarbon, or by mixing it with the spraying fluid, either by adding it to the fuel oil or to the fuel oil spraying fluid, or by injecting it separately into the furnace chamber; Figure 2 is a graph showing the effectiveness of a sodium hydroxide scavenger in varying proportions in the initial hydrocarbon spray fluid versus the change in absorbency of oil and oil. the color intensity of the carbon black obtained;

FIG. 1 comprises a chamber 1 opening out at its downstream end into a vertical cooler 2 in which the gaseous suspension of carbon black cools in the usual manner by coming into contact with jets of sprayed water and from which the suspension cooled passes through a collector. The aqueous carbon black slurry which eventually separates in the vertical cooler collects in a tank 3 and is used in the usual manner.
The installation shown comprises tangential blown burners 4 giving off hot gases from a blown flame and in which a combustible mixture of a fluid fuel and air is passed through pipes 5.
The initial hydrocarbon arrives in the furnace chamber in the form of rain of finely divided oil droplets, by means of a spray injector 6.
The spray injector penetrates radially into the chamber in a zone situated immediately downstream of the tangential burners 4. Several of these injectors are normally arranged in this position and are evenly distributed around the periphery of the chamber.
However, according to the invention, in its most general sense, it is also envisaged to cause the initial hydrocarbon to arrive via a spray injector arranged coaxially with respect to the furnace chamber and penetrating into this chamber via its end wall. upstream, as well as by other known means causing the initial liquid hydrocarbon to arrive in one or more spray jets. Likewise, the invention is not limited in

its most general meaning by means by which the hot gases of combustion are formed or by the choice of a fluid fuel introduced separately, but it also applies to the processes for the preparation of carbon black which consist in forming the hot gases of combustion by burning a portion of the initial hydrocarbon

tiql. tial.
Although as has already been said, the invention is particularly suitable for operations which consist in introducing the initial hydrocarbon through a two-fluid injector, in which a spraying fluid serves to cause the spraying of the initial hydrocarbon, it also applies to processes for preparing carbon black which include a single-fluid spray injector.
Various types of spray injectors are known and are commercially available and therefore need not be described in detail.
The installation of FIG. 1 comprises a reservoir 7 for storing the initial hydrocarbon. When this hydrocarbon is extremely viscous, it is advantageously maintained in the fluid state, which can be delivered by a pump, by means of a heating element 8, arranged in the tank and a stirrer of any suitable type 9 , so as to keep the contents of the tank at constant temperature.
The initial hydrocarbon leaves the reservoir 7 through a pipe 10 under the action of a feed pump 11 and passes through a pipe 12 into the spray injector or injectors 6. The pipe 12 contains a

The results obtained by varying the proportion of NaOH added in this way are shown in the graph of figure 2, on which the values of oil absorption in cm3 / kg of black and coloring intensity in percentage of the coloring intensity of the normal black FF are indicated as a function of the proportions in g of caustic soda per liter of the initial hydrocarbon. This graphics-makes it stand out sharply
<Desc / Clms Page number 22>
the favorable influence exerted by a very small proportion of the attenuator, in particular on the decrease in the absorption power of the oil. There is also a notable influence, although less marked, on the intensity of coloration of the carbon black obtained.
The most suitable proportion of sodium hydroxide also depends on the desired results and the nature of the initial hydrocarbon chosen. Clearly improved results are obtained with a proportion not exceeding 0.012 g of caustic soda per liter of initial hydrocarbon and even less. It is generally not recommended to add a proportion greater than 6 g / l of initial hydrocarbon. The most advantageous results are obtained by the addition process described above when the proportions are between 0.012 and 1.2 g of sodium hydroxide per liter of initial hydrocarbon.
Example 2 - Another series of tests is carried out in the installation of FIG. 1 in which the spray fluid consists of water vapor. By way of comparison, no weakener of the structure of the carbon black is added during test 1.
During test n 2, an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide is introduced into the spray vapor, as in the previous example, and during test n 3 an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide directly into the initial hydrocarbon in the spray injector.
The conditions of the results of these three tests are given in Table 2 below,

It emerges from the foregoing results that with regard to oil absorption, the mode of introduction of the attenuator does not give rise to any difference. However, a notable increase in the intensity of coloring is observed in Test No. 3.
Example 3 - A third series of tests is carried out in the installation of FIG. 1, in which the only spray fluid consists of hot water under pressure. For comparison, no attenuator is added during test 1. The proportions of sodium hydroxide dissolved in the spray fluid are different in tests N s 2 and 3.

The production of carbon black is therefore increased, while maintaining colloidal conditions identical to a, of about 22 by increasing the flow rate of the feed, an increase made possible by the addition of the weakener according to the invention. .
When carrying out operations of this type, one generally obtains by increasing the oil charge, that is to say the flow rate of the charge of carbon black into larger particles whose oil absorbing power is larger, When adding a weakener according to the invention, not only is the same oil absorption characteristics preserved, but also a carbon black is obtained in finer particles than one might expect .
The invention therefore makes it possible to significantly increase the oil charge, thereby increasing the production rate, while obtaining

normally obtained with a lower oil charge and at the same time retaining the initial oil absorption characteristics.
It is also possible, as has already been said, to avoid the consequences of variations in the quality of the initial hydrocarbon by adding a weakener for the structure of the carbon black according to the invention in proportions chosen in such a manner. to maintain constant the quality of the carbon black obtained.
Example 6 - The conditions and results shown in Table 6 below were obtained during other tests in which the weakeners were introduced in the form of aqueous solutions and were injected in this form into the vapor of water. spray.
By way of comparison, no attenuator was added during test 1.

Chosen solution = 30 g of weakener per liter of water.
During the preceding tests, the trisodium phosphate and the sodium methasilicate significantly reduced the oil absorption capacity of the carbon blacks obtained. The oil load is higher in runs N s 2 and 3 than in comparative run 1 to maintain the intensity of coloring at about the same value as that of the control run. Normally, as the oil charge increases without the addition of weakener, the coloring intensity decreases and the power

The structural weakener in the other tests consisted of sodium hydroxide which was mixed with the initial hydrocarbon in the proportions indicated before this hydrocarbon was sprayed into the reaction chamber.
The effectiveness of the process of the invention in reducing and determining the structure independent of variations in the characteristics of the initial hydrocarbon by choosing from each of the characteristics of the initial hydrocarbon has been demonstrated with greater precision. tests of Examples 1 to 9 which precede an initial hydrocarbon consisting of a residue of. cracked oil whose

characteristics have been indicated previously and for which the characterization factor K is equal to 10.3.
The characteristics of the creosote charge and of the aromatic concentrate of Example 10 are as follows:

It must be understood that the invention is not limited to the special charges which are the subject of the aforementioned examples or to the source of the charge,
but can be applied to all operations in which very strongly aromatic tars of high molecular weight, petroleum and coal tar residues or aromatic concentrates resulting from the various extraction treatments undergone by the petroleum fractions or coal tar.
But it is essential that the average molecular weight of the initial hydrocarbon is between about 100 and about 400 and its aromatics content between about 65% and about 100%. These hydrocarbon feedstocks can still be characterized by the "UOP characterization factor" as defined in
<Desc / Clms Page number 37>
the work "Chemical Process Principles, Part 1, Material and Energy Balances" by Hougen & Watson, 1950 edition, pages 329-330, the K factor being between 9 and 10.9. It should of course be understood that the indications of the description relating to the molecular weight and to the aromatic hydrocarbons relate to a product whose characteristics lie between the aforementioned limits.
When the aromatics content of the initial hydrocarbon is less than 65%, the aforementioned additives do not exert any appreciable influence on the structure of the carbon black obtained. It is necessary, for their efficiency to be the best, that the degree of taromaticity of the initial hydrocarbon is between 75% and 100%, its average molecular weight between 150 and 350 and its characterization factor K between 9 and 10.5. Figure 4 is a graph which indicates the relationship between oil absorbing power and particle size or contact area of the various types of carbon blacks in question.
As has already been said, the oil absorption characteristics of a carbon black relative to the average particle diameter of this black are an index of the structural characteristic of the black.
The values of the oil absorption capacity in cm3 / kg of carbon black have been plotted in the graph of FIG. 4 as a function of the average diameter of the particles in millimicrons.
The band in this graph referred to as the "normal absorption band * includes carbon blacks of
<Desc / Clms Page number 38>
"channel" (of soft treatment, of moderate treatment, of hard treatment and the blacks of "channel" of strong coloring) and the fine blacks of FF oven and semi-reinforced of SRF oven, obtained from gas or enriched gas of oil. It is the blacks included in this band which have been designated above all the number of blacks of normal structure. Below this band of normal structure, the blacks of the area called the sub-normal absorption region are called black of weak structure, and above the band of normal structure, the blacks of the area called the region of super-normal absorption are said to be black of strong structure.
These blacks are acetylene blacks and furnace blacks, which are normally obtained by operations of the type described above with a high molecular weight aromatic charge. the characteristic of black, sometimes referred to as non-structural index, consists in the ratio between the characteristic of oil absorption of a given black, of particles of a known mean diameter, and the power of oil absorption of a black into particles of the same average diameter and normal structure, multiplied by 100. The average particle diameters shown in this graph and on the other hand in the description were determined by the electron microscope method.
The process of the invention applies to the preparation of various types of furnace blacks and makes it possible to prepare with the heavy hydrocarbon residues defined above various types of furnace blacks, for example of the FF grade which r. 'have been prepared so far only from an initial gas or an oil enriched gas.
<Desc / Clms Page number 39>
The process of the invention also makes it possible to prepare oven blacks of the fineness of the main types of oven blacks currently in common use, but whose oil absorption capacity is notably less. The proportion of additive required for the preparation of the kiln blacks into finer particles is generally lower.

The relation between the proportion of additive and the particle size of the black and the application of the invention to the preparation of various types of carbon blacks is indicated by the graph of figure 5 which gives the results obtained with a potassium hydroxide additive and whose curves represent the values of the oil absorption capacity in cm3 / kg of black, as a function of the proportion of the additive chosen, in grams of potassium hydroxide per liter of initial hydrocarbon.
The various curves in this graph represent respectively oven blacks of the FF type (fine oven) with a contact surface between 70 and 80 m2 / g, the oven blacks of the SRF (semi-reinforcement oven) type. the contact surface is between 20 and 302m / g, of the GPF type (furnace of general application) of which the contact surface is between 40 and 50 m2 / g, of the HAF type (high abrasion furnace) of which the surface contact area is between 95 and 105 m2 / g and of the ISAF type (intermediate super-abrasion furnace) whose contact surface is between 125 and 135 m2 / g but whose oil absorption characteristics are notably lower .

oil absorption tick, as well as characteristics of the initial hydrocarbon. It is generally recommended to adopt a proportion of at least equal to about 0.0012 of potassium compound per 1 of hydrocarbon.
The average molecular weights referred to above were determined by the freezing point lowering method as described for example in the work "Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology", Kirk-Othmer, volume 8, page 851, and the percentage of aroma- ticity was determined by the method of absorption by Mair silica gel, as described for example in volume 12 of the same publication on page 355, in choosing petroleum ether as solvent.
