Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 15>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 16>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 17>

  Process and device for obtaining coke on coking grids with production of rich gas.

   The present invention relates to a new process and a novel device for the coking of bituminous products in fine grains, such as coal, oil shale, mixtures of petroleum and mineral substances, wood and wood waste, on fixed, mobile or conveyors. It relates more particularly to the preparation of coke and coke-ore agglomerates from finely granulated bituminous coal, the shortening of the cooking time, as well as the production of gas with high calorific value (rich gas) during coking on said grids.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The usual methods known hitherto for coking coal on fixed or mobile grids are applicable only if the sort granuloma under which the coal is found gives the whole of the layer sufficient gas permeability, which means that the bitumen content of the hard coal should not be too high.

   It is known, in fact, that a fine-grained bituminous coal of a maximum size of 10 mm with a high percentage of grains of less than 5 mm cannot be coked on grids with a profitable speed, because of its insufficient gas permeability. The implementation of known methods of coking on a grid is particularly difficult, when it is a case of a coal whose volatile matter content is greater than 16%, because the phenomena of swelling and agglutination during the heating of Such charcoal virtually negates the initial gas permeability of charcoal.

   The process according to the present invention allows, on the other hand, the coking of finely granulated coals with a high bitumen content, for example common coking coal. The coking of these coal in the process of the invention can be carried out advantageously at the same time as the reduction of minorais, with a view to obtaining coke-ore agglomerates.

   While, in the processes known hitherto, the coking progresses in zones from top to bottom in the carbon layer resting on the grate, in the process according to the invention, it is started and completed simultaneously over the entire thickness. of the charcoal bed, so that complete cooking is achieved within a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 much shorter time than at present.

   The process according to the invention also makes it possible to recover, in the form of gas with high calorific value (rich gas), part of the gases given off from the coal, to the extent that these gases do not need to be burned. to provide the heat necessary to maintain coking.

   Processes are already known, in which the coking or the distinction of bituminous coal takes place on a grid, preferably a conveyor aril. In these processes, a 3 to 50 cm thick layer of charcoal is moved under an ignition vault which only ignites the surface of the layer. Air, preferably heated, is blown through it, from bottom to top or vice versa. The distillation and coking gases which are given off from the coal burn with the air inside the layer. Under the effect of the heat thus developed, coking is carried out from top to bottom or vice versa through the entire layer.

   It has turned out that this operation can only be carried out economically if the combustion air is blown from the bottom up through the layer to be coked and only if there is a charcoal which does not s' not agglutinating and in the form of cleavers with a caliber of about 5 to 30 mm.

   This very simple coking process therefore has the drawback of requiring the use of lumpy coal which, when layered, has sufficient permeability to gas and which, during its heating, must not split or swell, in order to do not block the gas passages inside the coal bed, which revicnt

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 to say that the bitumen content of the coal used must remain low. The coking of coke coals, flaming coals and normal dry coals, on a grate was therefore not possible until now.

   By the process of the present invention, it becomes possible to cekéfiér on grid fine coals rich in bitumen, for example dc coal!: E.

   It has been discovered that the coking on a grid of the aforementioned products is possible, if one spares, in the layer to be placed on the grid, vertical gas circulation channels, which are traversed by the air or the gases coming from from combustion, air and tail gases from coking.

   Afraid to practice these air and gas channels in 1-: layer of the coal to be coked, it is possible to embed in it, preferably from top to bottom, re-grinding punches, which drive out the coal and spare, after having been withdrawn, vertical channels. One can happily use tabular punches which carry with them, when they are withdrawn, the coal inside the tube.

  The punches are advantageously in a circular shape in section and tapering in the direction of their introduction. The channels can also have a rectangular shape and extend parallel to the direction of advance of the coking grid and / or perpendicular to this direction. In the latter case, the channels intersect to form a pattern similar to that of a checkerboard. The intersecting air channels then define columns of coke, which makes it possible to obtain molded coke by simple means.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   If one wishes to obtain particularly dense dimension, one can. compress the carbon layer before coking. This compression can be carried out, for example, by vertical compression of the layer to be coked, or by shaking the latter, in a known manner.

   It is particularly advantageous to operate this compression at the same time as the printing of the channels, passing the finely granulated coal to be coked on a grid, between a pair of profiled rollers.

  The profiles, which form parallel channels in the direction of movement of the carbon bed, can be arranged on the upper roll, on the infeed roll, or on both rolls at the same time.

     In the latter case, the facing profiles are advantageously slightly offset from one another and the head of each of them exceeds the other profile, so that the sides of the neighboring profiles belonging to the same channel s: : touch. In this way, wedge-shaped profiles are produced, which are easily detached from the compressed layer of carbon, without causing any unfavorable narrowing of the channels.

   A particularly important field of applications of the process according to the invention is the manufacture of coke-ore agglomerates from mixtures of iron ore and coking coal. In the processes known to date, the coke-ore agglomerate is prepared in coking processes; hence an attack inevitably occurs on the walls of the chambers by iron ores, which considerably reduces the resistance in service of the retorts. This drawback does not exist in the present proceeds.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

   In order to simultaneously carry out the coking of the coal and the reduction of the iron minorai, it is possible to fill the danals formed in the layer of coal to be coked with iron ore and also to cover the latter with a layer of iron ore. , the calibration of which must not interfere with the passage of the gas stream.

   The application of a layer of iron ore on the coal has a favorable influence on the strength of the coke, since the heavy iron minorai compresses the coal during the blowing operation. The iron ore is preferably deposited on the coal bed, when the latter is already ignited and the coking has penetrated approximately 2 to 3 cm inside the layer.

   The description which will follow with regard to the appended drawing, given by way of nonlimiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be achieved, the particularities which emerge both from the drawing and from the text forming, of course, part of said invention. invention.

   Figure 1 is a plan view of a coal bed to be coked on a grate. The upper openings of the air passage holes are designated by 1.

   FIG. 2 shows, also in plan, a layer of charcoal placed on a grid. In this example, the air does not pass through the carbon layer through circular holes as in the example of Figure 1, but through rectangular channels arranged parallel to one another. In Figure 2, the channels are designated by 2 and the carbon layer between these channels by 3.

   Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view of a hard coking grate which contains the bed of coal to be coked. Looks like. combustion goes into the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 direction of the arrows between the bars 4 of the grille. 1 and (2) denote the openings for the passage of air through the layer of carbon 3: 1 referring to figure 1 (section AA) and 2 to figure 2 ( BB cut). FIG. 4 schematically represents the preparation of a layer of charcoal 3, to be coked on a grid and provided with parallel air passage channels, this preparation is carried out by passing the charcoal between twin cylinders of suitable profile. The upper cylinder 5 is provided with profiles 6 and the lower cylinder 7 with identical profiles 6.

   The carbon of the layer is compressed by the cylinders, the profiles of which imprint in the layer of continuous vertical channels 2. The profiles of the lower and upper cylinders are offset with respect to each other, so as to touch each other by their flanks 8 opposite.

   The known methods put into practice for the coking of coal on a grate consist in igniting the top of the layer, for example by means of an ignition vault arranged above the layer, and in simultaneously blowing in the layer. combustion air through the layer. This current of combustion air, after passing through the grate, circulates from bottom to top in the layer. The ignition progresses from top to bottom in the coal bed, in the opposite direction from that in which the combustion air circulates.

  Heat is supplied by 1; combustion of the gases which are released from the coal and which are burnt by the combustion air passing through the layer.

   It was also proposed to make the ignition from top to bottom using a stream of ignition gas.

  The ignition of the charcoal takes place in this case only in

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 surface and progresses from top to bottom through the coal bed, in the form of a combustion bed, due to the fact that harsh: the superficial inflammation of the layer is also introduced from top to bottom a current of air .

   These grate coking processes can only be practically applied to lumpy coals.

  If you want to coke fine charcoal at an industrially exploitable speed, you must first transform the charcoal into briquettes. These can form, in the form of egg-shaped briquettes, an irregular layer on the coking grid.

   It has been discovered that the fine coking charcoal can be put on the grid in a particularly advantageous manner according to the present invention, and according to Figures 1 to 4, in the form of strips or parallel beads, between which are housed vertical channels. for the passage of air without the use of additional means of transport and without it occurring, between the press
 EMI8.1
 and 1-. walking grid, an effiilturaont of these 6 pre-formed elements. Clogging of the gas passages by rupture of the briquettes is thus avoided and the profitability of the coking on grate increased accordingly.

   We will now show how the coking time of the carbon layers thus shaped can be significantly reduced by using the known methods of coking on a grid, whether the operation is carried out on layers of coking carbon or not, of preliminary coals. molds in briquette farms, or on the aforementioned parallel strips or cords, formas of coking carbon and comprising vertical channels for the passage of air.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

   It turned out that the coking is notably accelerated if, instead of carrying out from the beginning as up to now, only the ignition of the surface layer in contact with the upper combustion chamber, one starts immediately the 'coking operation by rapid and energetic ignition of the whole of the free internal surface of the coal bed, in order to then achieve, in the whole of this bed, a partial combustion of the coal distillation gas escaping from the whole surface internal free or of the entire surface of the various pieces of coal, with the combustion air circulating through said layer. In the known processes, on the other hand, the combustion of the distillation gases takes place successively from top to bottom in the various horizontal planes of the carbon layer.

   The invention provides a number of means for rapidly igniting the entire internal surface of the coal bed, with a view to accelerating coking.

   The first of these means is to push, or to suck, from top to bottom, through the layer of coal, an ignition flame, supplied to initiate the coking operation by a gas burnt above the layer, and until the carbon particles directly on the grate are also ignited on the surface. So that the particles do not ignite only at the surface as in the processes known hitherto, it is essential to direct through the carbon layer a stream of ignition gas as energetic as possible and, having the temperature. required by inflammation, at least up to the immediate vicinity of the grate. This point is essential in the invention.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

  Its significance and influence on coking, as well as the resulting industrial progress, has not been noticed so far and does not exist in any of the earlier processes.

   After the entire free internal surface has ignited, the combustion air is blown through the grate and from the bottom up into the carbon bed as usual. In the ignition phase of the coking operation, the gas circulation therefore takes place in the opposite direction to the circulation during the coking phase proper. This embodiment is particularly suitable for the on-grill coking of layers formed of lump charcoal, or small / medium / briquettes, for example egg-shaped briquettes. The aforementioned can also be applied to the coking of carbon beads resting on the grate and provided with vertical air passage channels, prepared in accordance with the invention.

   In the latter case, a second means proposed by the invention for ensuring the rapid ignition of the internal surfaces consists in introducing, into the vertical air passage cenaux, gas inlet pipes, directed from top to bottom and extending to the immediate vicinity of the gate. The gas escaping from these pipes forms, with the combustion air which rises from the grate through the channels, an ignition flame, which burns from the bottom up in the channels and ignites the walls thereof. The gas admission can be interrupted, for example by removing the gas intake pipes from the channels, when the ignition has reached the entire internal surface.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

   As a variant of this second means, it is possible to blow into the channels just above the grid the air necessary for the combustion of the ignition gas, by means of air pipes parallel to the gas pipes.

  This third means provided by the invention is particularly recommendable in the case where the coking of the parallel lamellae or strands of coal is carried out on a conveyor grid which moves in the direction of the lamellae or strands. The ignition gas inlet pipes can then be placed in a fixed position at a determined location above the mobile grate, so that the charcoal beads resting on the grate run past the ignition flames and thus enter. ignited on their internal surfaces.

   A fourth means proposed by the invention consists in carrying out ignition through the grid. Hot gases with a suitable oxygen content are for this purpose blown through the grate into the coal bed and vertically upward into it. The temperature of the gases must be high enough to ensure ignition of the internal surface, an ignition which in this case progresses up the grid, inside the layer, at the same time as the gas flow.

  For this ignition to take place with certainty, it is necessary that when it enters the layer of carbon, the ignition gas must be at a temperature greater than 500 C. As the flame is interrupted after ignition and that, jusou ' at the end of the coking, a blowing of combustion air, if necessary colder, can be made through

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 the grid, it is certain that the average temperature of the grid, which has a great influence on the service resistance of the latter, remains sufficiently low, even for a high ignition temperature. for the implementation of this fourth rroyen proposed by the invention,

   the combustion air blown through the grate in the coal bed can be heated to a temperature above that of the ignition point of the coking coal. The latter is then ignited directly by the combustion air and the ignition propagates from the grate, along with the gas stream, s through the coal bed. This measurement, however, requires air temperatures of 600 C and above, so the grid must be made of refractory steel.

   Apart from the above means for ensuring the simultaneous and rapid ignition of the entire outer and inner surface of the carbon layer to be coked, it is possible, within the framework of the present invention, to apply others. Some can be chemical, such as oxygen enrichment of the ignition air, to lower the ignition temperature of the carbon. Others may be physical, such as the use of ignition flames intensified by sound vibrations.

   Another object of the invention is to obtain gas with a high calorific value (rich gas) during coking on carbon grids.

   As already mentioned above, the known processes for transforming coals into coke consist in igniting them on their surface on a grid, then blowing air from the bottom up through the grid, which burns the gases released from the coal, which

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 heats the layer of carbon to be coked.

   The waste gases from grate coking are formed by the divination gases burnt by the air blown under the grate, these gases have a high nitrogen content and, therefore, a low calorific value.

   The research carried out to obtain, during coking on a grid, a gas of normal composition similar to that of the precious furnace gas., Resulted in operating by partial puncture of the gasification gas. This operation consists in providing for coking, a mobile grid comprising several zcnes separated from one another on the gas side.

   These zones are arranged one acre the other, and one serves for the blowing of the combustion air through the layer of coal and coking the neighboring zones for the suction of gas downwards through the layer of coal and Grid. Carrying out this operation comes up against great difficulties, because it is practically impossible to hermetically isolate the two gas compartments from one another, so that it always enters, in the gas satoiré, either of the gas. 'fried air, or even partially spent combustion air coming from the two neighboring zones and used for the combustion of the gas.

   The invention makes it possible to obtain rich naz during coking on a grid, without encountering the above difficulties.

   It has been found that in order to keep the rich gasification gas particularly simple and safe isolated from the combustion gas required for heating

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

 of the carbon layer, it was sufficient to operate the coking grid with periodic time intervals, which -assure alternatively the par- / and gas extraction / tial from totally or partly unburned gases .

   Ure coking grid arranged according to the invention is provided for example with a throttling member, arranged in the air intake duct, which makes it possible to periodically reduce the flow rate to approximately 1/10 of its normal value. air supplying the coking grid. When the grate receives its full quantity of air, a significant fraction of the coal gasification gas, for example 50%, burns inside the coal bed by heating the latter.

  The gas which escapes from the grate normally has a relatively low calorific value and cannot be used as a rich gas. It is burned in a boiler for example.

  If, after such an insufflation for about 5 mir. With total air flow, this flow is reduced to 1/10 of its value, gasification continues, thanks to the heat stored in the layer of coal and coke, until that the temperature has dropped sharply. The air, reduced to about 1/10 of its normal flow, is just enough to prevent the gasification gas from escaping from the grate down into the air intake ducts and therefore burning. The carbonation period may itself last 5 minutes, and be followed again by a period of 5 minutes with the admission of the total airflow, etc.

   In the path of the exhaust gases above the grate is arranged an inversion member, by means of which the stream of partially burned gas coming from the heating period is separated from the rich gas being evolved.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 15>

 during the gasification period, which can be collected separately. In a particular embodiment of the invention, the gasification gas is sucked into the chamber located above the coking grid.

   In order to expel the gas with a high nitrogen content from the heating period, a jet of water vapor of short duration can be introduced into this chamber.

   If it is necessary to avoid as much as possible the thermal dissociation of a gasification gas from which the by-products are to be extracted, the gas is evacuated from the layer downwards, below the grid, by discharge or as - piration in the air intake box. The latter has the effect of moving members, allowing it to be isolated from the combustion air. These devices do not form part of the present invention.

   The comparative tests / reported below show to what extent the present invention makes it possible to reduce the coking time compared with known methods.

  Test N 1
Coal, with a particle size of 0.01 to 6 mm and a volatile content of 22%, was coked in a 6 cm layer. without prior compression, on a mobile / usual type grid moving at a speed of 0.15 cm / s.

  By the known process, that is to say ignition under an ignition vault and blowing from the bottom to the top of 2m3N per kg. of combustion air charcoal the coking time was 65 minutes. The resulting coke had 4% volatiles, 14% ash and a bulk density of 0.36 g / cm3.

   The same coal was compressed in accordance with

 <Desc / Clms Page number 16>

 the invention at a pressure of 70 kg / cm2, between profiled cylinders moving in synchronism with the grid, to form cords 22 cm high and 8 cm high. in width, separated from each other by 1 cm. For 10 minutes, the entire free internal surface of the charcoal beads was ignited simultaneously, by means of an energetic ignition flame directed from top to bottom and reaching the immediate vicinity of the grate, and breathed the same specific volume of combustion air through the coal bed, but from top to bottom. All other conditions remaining the same, the coking time was reduced to 40 minutes, including the ignition period.

   The obtained coke had 2% volatiles, 11% ash and a bulk density of 0.4 g / cm 3, it was, therefore, of better quality than the coke obtained by the known process.

  Test N 2
Under the same conditions as for test N 1 was coked on the grid, with a layer thickness of 15 cm., A carbon in grains of 10 to 30 mm., The volatile matter content of which was 16%. . By the known method, that is to say ignition by vault with blowing of combustion air from bottom to top, a coking time of 58 minutes was obtained. By the orocédé of the invention, that is to say 5 minutes of ignition by introducing a flame from top to bottom up to the vicinity of the grid, then blowing in combustion air from bottom to top, the coking time was reduced to 26 minutes.

  Test ? 3
40 cm3 ovoid charcoal briquettes with 8% bitumen content, were coked by the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 17>

 traditional method and under the conditions indicated in test N 1, under a layer thickness of 10 cm. The coking lasted 50 minutes. By applying the method according to the invention as in the test? 1 and with a layer thickness of 19 cm., A coking time of 40 minutes was obtained.

  Test N 4
45% volatile charcoal was coked on a grate under test conditions? 1. By the previously known process, compressed beads of 4 em were prepared with this carbon. wide and 11 cm. in height, which were placed on the grid at intervals of 1 cm. By operating the coking by the old process, that is to say ignition from the top with simultaneous blowing of air through the grate, the coking time reached 50 minutes.

   For the same width and height of 19 cm. of the carbon strands, all other conditions remaining the same, the coking was carried out by the process of the invention, by first igniting the internal surface between the carbon strands, by introduction without interruption, during 5 minutes, from top to bottom ignition flame through the channels to the vicinity of the grate. Combustion air was then blown from the bottom up through the channels. Coking lasted 32 minutes.

   It goes without saying that modifications can be made to the embodiments which have just been described in particular by substituting equivalent technical means, without going beyond the scope of the present invention.
