 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 est également conformé de façon que, lorsqu'il est   étiré   en substan- ce en complet contact avec   le   diaphragme, il soit étiré d'une façon appréciable;

   une vanne à diaphragme du genre décrit, dans laquelle l'é- tirage du contre-diaphragme amène des parties de ce   contre-diaphrag''   me à compriuer les parties adjacentes du diaphragme contre leur siège; une vanne à diaphragme   au   genre décrit, dans laquelle le contre-diaphragme soit étiré par.un organe presseur auquel le dia- phragme est fixé par une liaison à mouvement perdu;

   une vanne à diaphragme du genre décrit, dans laquelle la liaison à mouvement perdu couliege à travers le contre-diaphragme et permette au contre-diaphragme de se déplacer en s'écartant du   diaphragme;   une   vanne à   diaphragme du genre décrit, dans laquelle, dans une position, le contre-diaphragme soit en substance non   étiré   lorsqu'il est écarté d'une certaine distance du diaphragme qui  à ce moment, n'est en substance pas déformé; une vanne à diaphragme du genre décrit, dans laquelle   la   liaison à mouvement perdu comporte une nouvelle construction qui est associée à une surface latérale du presseur pour empêcher la liaison de tourner per rapport à ce dernier;

 contre disphragmeavancé vers le diaphragme mais non   étiré; '   ' la Fig. 2 est une vue semblableà la Fig. 1 montrant le contre-diaphragme étiré et comprimant le diaphragme contre le . siège, pour fermer la vanne;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

Les côtes   inclinas   de la' partie centrale renflée du contre- diaphragme   Elastique   28 et du diaphragme en matière plastique iner- te 30 sont suffisamment minces pour pouvoir ;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

  Diaphragm valves *
The present invention relates to improvements to diaphragm valves and, in particular, to a diaphragm valve in which the flow passage is substantially direct and the diaphragm is of the type having a strongly swollen central portion which extends. , when the valve is closed, from an opening on one side of the body, inside the passage and this bearing contact with the opposite side of the passage.

   For many years these diaphragm valves have become widely used, because their passages are free from the abrupt interruptions and deviations which characterize the more common threshold type diaphragm valves and gate valves. spherical stopper ,.

  However, during this period, chemical inert plastic materials such as polytetratiuoroethyanes have been widely used as diaphragms in threshold type diaphragm valves, owing to their ability to resist corrosion by. the fluids treated,
The difficulty is that even though these inert plastics are durable enough to stand up to fears. known to not break when used for diaphragms
 EMI2.2
 of threshold type valves, the shaping of these entire plateslues into diaphragms for,

  % direct pass valves produce deformation of certain regions of the strongly swollen cetitrules leaving these diaphragms, such that the, d3ophrnyne ruptures during a relatively small number of valve operations etc.

   Particular fn, in valves of the direct pass type
 EMI2.3
 or in substance direct the di.phragmr (ass until pray was rubber or rubbery material in these valves) ensures

 the closing of the valve by being pressed against a band in the form of a band on the body, one end of which is on the surface of the flange of the opening 4 -.1aphra & ne on one side of it and passes over the edge of the diaphragm opening, descends along an inclined wall to the side of the passage and then rejoins on the other inclined wall until its extra extr4.ait ± located on the surface of the flange of the diaphrabue opening or opposite side of this opening.

   While the pressure exerted against the seat on the inclined walls and on the bottom of the passade was

 clives after a stroke substantially greater than that receded to properly compress the diaphragm against the ends of the seat which are perpendicular to this axis, and it has been found that it is not possible to place parts above the ends of the seat pressers which only start to act on the diaphragm when the central part has been partially compressed.

   In other words, the type of construction of these valves does not lend itself to the critical manufacture of a pressing member yes begins to compress different parts of the diaphragm at different points of its advance and which does not act on the whole. diaphragm only at the end of its stroke.

  Attempts in this direction have not been satisfactory or have resulted in excessive expenditure.
 EMI3.1

  The solution to this problem has been to now..er the diaphragm of rubber or rubbery material so tightly without deformation, the strongly swollen conical central part no longer reaches the bottom of the passage, a substantial stretching of the passage. dobby of the diaphragm by the advancement of the pressing member being thus necessary to form the valve.

   This stretching attracts parts of the
 EMI3.2
 diaphragm which are adjacent z, the briao of the opening and the bo: * d of this opening, strongly enough against the seat in these places to ensure uno closure., which makes it possible to dispense with pros' parts overhanging these partial diaphragm,, However, although this technique of stretching, the diaphragm

 has been satisfactory for direct passage diaphragm valves when rubber or rubber diaphragms are used, diaphragms made of certain chemically inert plastics do not return to their original shape.
 EMI3.4
 ginal after sufficient initial stretching to ensure closure of the valve in the manner described.

   This being the case, it then becomes typical to close the valve or else the diaphragms surround their impermeability to the liquids controlled by the valve, after this stretching.

   However, it has been found that these difficulties can be
 EMI3.5
 overcome to a surprising and unexpected extent when the

   Unlike the bulging central part of the plastic diaphragm, the bulging central part of the counter-diaphragm is short enough that it needs to be significantly stretched by the pressing member during the closing of the valve in order to

 to reach the point where it begins to compress the center of the plastic diaphragm against the seat. The combination of an inexhaustible plastic diaphragm with a rubber backing diaphragm.
 EMI4.3
 The expandable ariié is made possible, in a preferred embodiment of the invention, by a new construction whereby the diaphragm, the counter-diaphragm and the pressing member are interconnected. in all types of diaphragm valves including the through type valves, a connection should be provided between the diaphragm exposed to the fluid and the pressing member so that when the latter is retracted to open the valve, it will positively drive the diaphragm.

   The ex-

 experience has shown that one cannot adapt to the fluid pressure alone to move the diaphragm away from its seat in the open position and, in some cases, this pressure is even negative, that is to say

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

      The aforementioned arrangement generally comprises a connecting skull which is fixed to the center of the plastic diaphragm and which slidably traverses the center of the supporting counter-diaphragm and which is fixed to the pressing member. .

   According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, a lost motion link! special is provided to fix the connecting member to the near organ! sor of aorta that there is a gap between the plastic diaphragm and the counter-diaphragm when their central parts! bulges are fully advanced towards the seat and the counter-diaphras is not stretched. Then, the tight closing of the valve takes place by moving the pressing member to stretch the counter-diaphragm by the distance of this interval and. Bring it into contact with the; plastic diaphragm.

   This stretching of the counter-diaphragm compresses the diaphragm at the ends of the seat and that contact closes! compresses the diaphragm in the middle or seat.

   A very good result of this connection device is that the diaphragm and the counter-diaphragm can be installed in a valve without stretching the counter-diaphragm or deforming the diaphragm, or both, during this installation. Thus, during the installation of a valve or the replacement of a diaphragm, the peripheries of the diaphragm and the counter-diaphragm must be brought into coincidence with each other as well as with the flanges of the diaphragm. bonnet and valve body and between them. The special lost motion linkage mentioned above allows the diaphragm and counter diaphragm to be installed without causing the deformation and stretching which would make this alignment extremely difficult.

   However, it is the object of the present invention to provide: a diaphragm valve of the through-flow or through-substance type comprising a diaphragm of chemically inert plastic material conforming so that when brought into contact ! with its seat, it is not substantially stretched and it also has a rubber or rubbery counter-diaphragm which

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 is also shaped so that when stretched substantially into full contact with the diaphragm it will be stretched appreciably;

   a diaphragm valve of the kind described, in which the pulling of the counter-diaphragm causes parts of this counter-diaphragm to compress adjacent parts of the diaphragm against their seat; a diaphragm valve of the kind described, in which the counter-diaphragm is stretched by a pressing member to which the diaphragm is fixed by a lost motion connection;

   a diaphragm valve of the kind described, in which the lost motion link slides through the counter diaphragm and allows the counter diaphragm to move away from the diaphragm; a diaphragm valve of the kind described, in which in one position the counter-diaphragm is substantially unstretched when it is spaced a certain distance from the diaphragm which at this time is not substantially deformed; a diaphragm valve of the kind described, in which the lost motion link has a new construction which is associated with a side surface of the presser to prevent the link from rotating relative thereto;

   a diaphragm valve of the kind described in which the thickness of the diaphragm of plastic material changes in a novel way and in which the counter-diaphragm has a surface in contact with the diaphragm which conforms to this variation of 'thickness.

   Other objects and advantages will emerge from the detailed description given below, by way of example, with reference to the aunexed drawings in which: FIG. 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a. , lA- ne with direct passage diaphragm according to the invention, the valve being shown. with the diaphragm stretched to the seat and with the

   Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section taken on line 3-3 of FIG. 2; Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section taken on line 4-4 of FIG. 5; and, FIG. 5 is a view similar to FIG. 1 but shows the valve in the open position.

   The valve shown comprises a body 10 having a passage 12 which passes right through it between the opposing end ports 14 and 16. These ports are provided with outer flanges there by which the body of the valve can. be fitted in a fluid line in the usual way, for example by being bolted to the corresponding flanges of the line. The passage 12 is substantially straight and of substantially cylindrical section over its entire length.

   However, midway between the ends of the pass, the body 10 is provided with a lateral opening 22 which is substantially circular and which is surrounded by a. anmu lar flange 24 disposed in a plane 26 parallel to the passage 12. from the flange 24, the inner walls of the body converge inwards and, at the sides of the body, they are connected substantially tangentially to the cylindrical walls of the body. passage. The points of tangency are indicated by the number 27 (see Figs. 3 and 4).

   The flange 24 which surrounds the opening 22 of the body has a clamping surface for the peripheral rim of a combined shutter member which comprises an elastic counter-diaphragm of rubber, or rubbery material 28 and a diaphragm of relatively inert plastic material. 30. These members include coincident peripheral parts 32 and 34 respectively, arranged in planes parallel to plane 26 and on one side of the latter.

   They also feature central swelling corner parts.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 cidentes 36 and 38, respectively * which extend from the other side of the plane 26 so that the swelling central part 38 of the plastic diaphragm extends into the passage 12 and blocks it. Specifically, the peripheral parts 32 and 34 are clamped on the flange 24 by a corresponding flange 40 provided on the lower end of a cap 42 which is fixed to the body by means of bolts and nuts 44, as shown in the drawing. ,

   The clamping of the flange 40 of the bonnet against the flange 24 of the body clamps the peripheral parts tightly against the flange 24 of the body and thus prevents the fluid in the passage 12 from escaping out of the body. valve and enter the bonnet,
The sloping ribs of the bulging central portion of the elastic counter-diaphragm 28 and the inert plastic diaphragm 30 are thin enough to be able;

  fold into the shape shown in Figs. 4 and 5 when, the pressing member 46, to which the combined diaphragm is attached, is retracted inside the cap 42 by an actuating mechanism 48 mounted in the cap. The bulging central parts of the combined diaphragm, exiting from the flow passage 12, open the valve and, on the contrary, by operating the actuation mechanism 48 to advance the presser 46 towards the passage 12, the parts are extended. centers of the combined diaphragm first to the position of Fig. 1 and then, advancing the size 46 further, to the position of Figs. 2 and 3.

   In this latter position, the swollen central part of the plastic diaphragm is firmly pressed against the body 10, to close the valve.

   Fig. 1 shows the shape of the combined shutter before it has been substantially deformed by the operating mechanism 48. In other words, the elastic counter-diaphragm 28 which can advantageously be made of rubber. synthetic, is molded to the shape shown in FIG. 1. Likewise, the inert plastic diaphragm 30, which is also preferably a molded member (eg polyteraluoroethylene),

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 preferably initially has the shape shown in FIG. AT.

   Thus, according to the invention, although the plastic diaphragm 30 is molded into a shape substantially corresponding to the interior surfaces of the body, the resilient counter-diaphragm 28 does not initially have such a shape as to conform to the interior surfaces of the body. the inner surface of the diaphragm, and there remains a gap 50 (Fig. 1). between the outer surface of the resilient counter-diaphragm and the inner surface of the plastic diaphragm.

     . Fig. 1 also shows that the outer surface 51 of the presser cone is preferably fitted against the inner surface of the resilient counter-diaphragm when the presser rod has been advanced to stretch the resilient counter-diaphragm firmly in contact with the interior of the diaphragm. made of inert plastic. Thus, by operating the mechanism 48 (by turning the handwheel 52), the elastic counter-diaphragm can be stretched until it is in perfect contact with the inner surface of the plastic diaphragm. Subsequently, any further maneuvering of the actuating mechanism causes the resilient counter-diaphragm 28 to compress the plastic diaphragm firmly against the walls of the body.

   The parts of the plastic diaphragm which extend around the ridge 54 formed by the inclined walls of the body and the peripheral flange 24. are thus, by the stretching of the elastic counter-diaphragm, tightly pressed against the body. this ridge at the moment when the swollen central part of the plastic diaphragm is pressed firmly into contact with the inclined wall of the body, all this operation being carried out without stretching the plastic diaphragm which in fact seals with the valve body.

   In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, the plastic diaphragm and the resilient counter-diaphragm are molded in the respective shapes shown in FIG. 1, In se @@ s, $ neither the disphragm nor the @ entre-dia-

 The plastic material 30 may retain its molded shape, if it tends to do so, but when the presser cone 446 is raised above the position shown in FIG. 1, the pin connecting the presser cone to the plastic diaphragm folds the plastic diaphragm, for example possibly up to the

 position shown in Figs. 4 and 5.

   With regard to the actuated mechanism 48, the presser cone 45 is connected by a pin 76 to the lower end of a threaded rod 78 which screws into a nozzle 80 rotating in an opening 82 made in the upper end of the chain. - skin 42. The flywheel 52 is in turn connected to the part of the nozzle 80 which passes through the opening 82 of the cap and the rotation of the nozzle is permitted by a thrust bearing 84 placed between the inner surface 86 of the bonnet around the opening 32 of the bonnet and a flange 87 on the nozzle.

 pin 76,
It is clear that the stud 56 which connects the combined shutter to the presser 46 must extend sufficiently below the presser (when the nut 70 is at the bottom of the cavity 68) to accommodate the different lengths. swelling central parts of the elastic counter-diaphragm and of the plastic diaphragm.

     When the stud has this length the plastic diaphragm is free to assume its molded shape if it is biased in this direction by the forces to which it is subjected and, at the same time, the elastic counter-diaphragm is also free. this take its molded form.

   The presser cavity 68 must extend sufficiently upwardly so that when the plastic diaphragm attacks the seat provided on the bottom of the passage, the presser cone can descend relative to the nut 70 until the resilient counter-diaphragm 28 is firmly pressed against the inner surface of the plastic diaphragm 30.

   As shown in the drawings, the bulging central part of the diaphragm consists of three parts. The first part 38a starts from the pinched peripheral pastie * 34 and is of substantially uniform thickness. The second part 38b starts from the first part and increases in thickness and the third part 60 is substantially thicker than the other two and forms the swollen tip.

   The reason for this new conformation is to ensure that the rolling flexion of the diaphragm takes place in part 38a as shown in Fias * 4 and 5.

   The outer surface of the bulging counter-diaphragm is shaped to conform to the shape of the inner surface of the diaphragm when the center-diaphragm has been advanced by the presser cone in contact with the diaphragm to close the valve.
