  " PROCEDE D'EXTRACTION DE JUS DE BETTERAVES à
SUCRE ET D'AUTRES MATIERES PREMIERES ET APPA.

   REIL POUR LA REALISATION DE CE PROCEDE .-

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

      ti finalement à la construction d'appareils tellement complexes que, d'une part, l'espoir d'obtenir par cette voie des avan- tages ne se justifie pas et, d'autre part,

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

  "PROCESS FOR EXTRACTING BEET JUICE at
SUGAR AND OTHER RAW MATERIALS AND APPA.

   REIL FOR THE CARRYING OUT OF THIS PROCESS .-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

The present invention relates to the process for separating the liquid from solid particles and, more specifically, to a process for extracting the juice from the crushed sugar beet by mechanical washing of this juice, from the cells containing the juice, using of an extracurricular liquid, and the apparatus for carrying out this process.

   It is known that the diffusion process, according to which the beet is first transformed into cousettes and then the juice is extracted in a continuous movement in countercurrent with the extraction liquid, heating the material to destroy the cells. and by providing mechanical movement and stirring of the ooesettes, is considered to be the most advanced method of extracting juice from the. sugar beet and other raw materials.

  The juice is separated from the destroyed cellulose using sieve devices.

   Apparatuses for carrying out this process are known which are formed either by horizontal cylindrical bodies or by one or two vertical columns with transport devices for moving the cossettes.

   Among the most sophisticated devices of the horizontal type, we can cite, for example, the diffusers made in the form of cylindrical bodies (drums) stationary and heated, arranged horizontally or with a slope and equipped with rotating paddle agitators, immobile counter-arms fixed on the body in the intervals between the agitators, as well as a sieve for the juice sampling. The in. suitable devices of this type are; the slowness of the process, a great weight of the metal, the complexity of construction

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 maintenance, operation and maintenance, as well as the loss of sugar in the pulp and reoiroulation of the chips.

   To intensify the process of separating the juice and reduce the loss of sugar in the spent pods, devices of the same type have been proposed in which not only the stirrers were rotating, but also the bodies of the devices and the counter-lows. were hollow and used to heat the cossettes with hot water or by circulating hot juice. Vacuum was also used to remove air from the cellular tissue of the beet. In this case, a certain intensification of the process was obtained and a reduction in sugar losses in the spent cassettes at the cost of complicating the construction and operation of the apparatus.

   Among the diffusers of the horizontal type, it is also necessary to cite the rotating diffusers (sectioned) operating continuously and produced in the form of a horizontal or tilted drum with, inside, an endless screw whose spirals formed by screen partitions subdivide the device into several sections (chambers) equipped with special devices for passing the raised cossettes from one chamber to another in the counterflow of the extraction liquid, The front part of the device is perforated for juice collection and covered with a hood.

   The extraction liquid enters through the oral shaft, the screen partitions are movable and hydraulically controlled by a system of articulated levers. the technical and technological drawbacks of rotating devices are as follows low speed, large mass of metal necessary for the manufacture of the devices, rotary movement of all this mass of metal, circulation of the extraction liquid in the horizontal plane only, complexity and high price of the device for moving the cossettes.

   Among the continuous column diffusers, we can

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 cite, for example, the devices formed by two columns interconnected in the lower part and using worm screws! for the descent of the cossettes - in one of the columns, for the ascent of the cousettes - in the other column and to pass the cousettes from one column to the other - in the communication between the two columns.

   Mention may also be made of the apparatus consisting of a single cylindrical column with a partition in the diametral plane and a bottom of spherical shape. To move the material and prevent its agglutination, these devices use shelves (pushers) with double articulated leaves and secured to rigid rods performing a reciprocating movement. Column devices have a certain advantage over horizontal devices, consisting in the more economical use of building height and surface.

   As for the disadvantages, they are roughly the same as in devices of the horizontal type.

   The operating results of diffusers, the main elements of which have been described above, show that the technological process of sugar extraction lasts at least 70 minutes with a filtration speed not exceeding 600 liters per minute per square meter from the surface of the sieve to the live section of 20%, at a temperature of 70 to 75 and with losses of sugar in the spent pods reaching, up to 5%. In addition, there is loss of sugar due to the vital activity of microorganisms at the broadcast station.

     On the other hand, as we have already indicated, these devices are characterized by the large mass of metal used and by large dimensions *
It can therefore be seen that attempts to improve in one way or another the process of extracting juice from the cossettes of sugar beet have succeeded.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

      ti finally to the construction of devices so complex that, on the one hand, the hope of obtaining advantages by this route is not justified and, on the other hand,

   the low operating speed (the diffusion device of the company BMA - Germany (federal - * operates at worm speeds between 0.7 and 1.7 revolutions per minute) in heavy devices with large spinning metal maoses set limits to the possibility of further improvement,
However, the authors of the present invention have discovered and proposed a new original solution of the process of extracting juice from sugar beet as well as an apparatus for carrying out this process and have practically carried out their invention,

The present invention relates especially to the extraction of juice from sugar beet in the production of sugar and more specifically to the method of extraction and the apparatus for carrying it out.

   The main object of the invention is the intensification of the juice extraction process. Another object of the invention is to improve the quality of the juice and to reduce the loss of sugar in the pulp. The invention embodying the method also enables a simpler construction apparatus to be provided with less metal expense and less complicated operating conditions. The aim of the invention is also the creation of such a device and a battery made up of several devices.
 EMI5.1

  In accordance with the aforementioned purposes, the inversion concerning the process is based on the fact that the graft-crushed benerave is introduced into appropriate apparatuses provided with filtering elements in the liquid stream. extraction under pressure. In each device, a curvilinear movement is imparted to the liquid and the raw material,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 for example, a movement with trajectory, developing in space, in spiral or in screw with the top down, in the course of which one separates the liquid from the raw material using the filter element, one prints to liquid and raw material separated in relative movement and taken out of the apparatus to extract juice from raw material by washing.

   The value of the pressure of the liquid introduced into the device must be greater than the value of the friction forces retaining the particles of the raw material in the filter elements in order to allow the self-regeneration of the filter leniency *
The invention concerning the apparatus is based on that the internal capacity of this apparatus is free (without any mechanical device), the inlet pipe of the raw material and the extraction liquid is arranged tangentially to the surface of the filter element, which is made in the form of a sieve net conforming to the shape of the body of the apparatus and forming with the wall of this body a closed annular capacity.

   Figure 1 shows the device in vertical section and Figure 2 gives the vertical section of the battery made up of several successively linked devices and the auxiliary equipment.

   As it was already indicated the sugar beet is first crushed, or more exactly, grated, in order to obtain the greatest quantity of cells containing the destroyed sugar and then this mass is mixed in a determined proportion with the liquid. extraction. The resulting mixture is set in curvilinear motion in a single straight stream, for example, in the conical sieve net of one of the devices included in the battery, according to the trajectory facing with the top down.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

   This trajectory of movement of the mixture is chosen to maintain the same speed of its movement while it is in the apparatus At the circulating velocities of curvilinear movement of the mixture duly chosen, the sweet juice is washed from the cells and discharged. under sufficient pressure through the sieve net. The condensed mixture is discharged through an orifice in the lower part of the apparatus. This mixture is diluted with the extraction liquid (with the juice of the first concentration) for the subsequent treatment. The liquid separated in the apparatus goes into the apparatus re-emitter located after the next apparatus, while the condensed mixture passes into each subsequent apparatus.

   The apparatus for carrying out the method described above is constituted as follows: the body 1 of the apparatus is composed by a hollow part of strongly elongated conical shape and by a cylindrical part joined to the conical part; the cylindrical part is covered by a removable cover 2 with a tubing? juice outlet and a connector 4 for washing and prophylactic disinfection of the appliance *
Inside the cylindrical part of the body and approximately to the middle of the conical part is placed a sieve net 5 covered at the top by a compact cover 6, fixed to the cover of the body of the apparatus by bolts. 7.

   Between the sieve net and the body, as well as between the covers, an annular capacity is formed for the reception of the juice from the sieve net and its evaouatuon under pressure from the apparatus. On the upper part of the net is fixed tangentially a pipe 8 serving for the introduction of the mixture to be treated. The conical part of the body ends in an outlet with a flange 9 for the remains of the destroyed cellulose (the pulp). The relationships between

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 heights of the conical and cylindrical parts of the device and the diameter of the cylindrical part are respectively equal to 2.5 - + - 3.0 and 1.

   The apparatus works as follows 1 the raw material finely ground (grated) and mixed With extraction liquid is fine under the pressure of 1.5-2 atm. Through the tubing 8 in the cylindrical part of the net to tarais 5.

   Thanks to the tangential arrangement of the tube 8 the mixture is set in a continuous circular motion in a helical path with the top downwards, During this movement, the juice is drawn off from the destroyed cells and arrives with part of the liquid d '' extraction in the annular capacity of the device from where it is discharged from the bottom upwards in the evacuation pipe 3 while the destroyed cellulose is evacuated through the orifice of the flange 9 for subsequent dilution by the liquid extraction.

   The high speeds of movement of the mixture are advantageously used for the acto-reneration of the sieve net both on the inside and on the outside.

   Experiments have shown that minimal vortices form near the surface of the sieve net, preventing the immediate approach of the pulp to the net.

  The results of other experiments have given the following characteristics of the extraction of beet juice according to the proposed process duration of the process (time during which the mixture is in the apparatus) - a few weeks; filtration speed up to 2400 liters per minute through one square meter of sieve surface with the live section equal to 20%; possibility of working without heating the mixture; elimination of losses due to the action of microorganisms; reduced consumption of calories and electricity.

   The simplicity of the construction of the devices,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 lower metal expenses for the construction and assembly of the plant as well as lower operating costs epnt so obvious that they do not require proof *
The installation (battery) made up of several devices connected to each other successively and by the auxiliary equipment works as follows:
The washed beets come from the laundromat on the elevator 10 (FIG. 2), are mounted and after passing through the magnetic separator 11 intended for the collection of metallic impurities, arrive in the hopper 12.

   Then; the batteraves are weighed on the scale 13 and discharged in the intervals and in determined portions into the hoppers 14 from where they are sent to the graters 15. The mass crushed in the rasps is sent through the hopper 16 into the filled mixer 17 beforehand of a certain quantity of water, the mixture obtained is delivered by the pump 18 in the apparatus 19 from where it is returned in the same mixer which makes it possible to obtain in the mixer the desired concentration of the mixture. * Then the pump 20 of the device 21 is started; the first portions of the separated liquid (juice) also return to the mixer 17. The condensed part of the mixture passes from the apparatus 21 to the receiver 22 where it is again diluted with water.

   The resulting mixture is pumped back through the pump 23 into the apparatus 24. The separated liquid passes from the upper pipe of the apparatus 24, through the intermediate receiver, into the pump 25, then it is expelled through the heater 26 where . it is heated up to 60-65 C and sent to the hopper 16 for then, together with the crushed beets, in the mixer 17.

   Then the tap 27 opens and the tap 28 closes after which the juice is sent for defecation. The mixture
