: "PROCEDE POUR LA PRODUCTION D'OBJETS A SURFACE
PLANE, OBTENUS AVEC DES POLYMERES ORGANIQUES
LINEAIRES, A MOLECULES ORIENTEES PAR ETIREMENT
BIAXIAL ".-
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

: "PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF SURFACE OBJECTS
FLAT, OBTAINED WITH ORGANIC POLYMERS
LINEAR, WITH STRETCH-ORIENTED MOLECULES
BIAXIAL ".-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention relates to a process for the production of objects with a flat surface, based on linear organic polymers, essentially amorphous at the start, crystalline sands by heating above their freezing temperature, and whose molecules. are oriented by biaxial stretching carried out in two stages, at a temperature above the freezing point of the polymers.
It is known that the properties of an object with a flat surface, for example polyethylene terephthalate, can be significantly improved by stretching. It is also known that by stretching in two directions, one perpendicular to the other, better resistance is obtained in both directions. By a heat post-treatment, during which the object stretched on both sides is kept under tension, both in the longitudinal direction and in the lateral direction, we can, moreover, o @ maintain a good stability to hot deformation (heat setting).
In the case of polyethylene terephthalate sheets, for example, these essentially amorphous digs are stretched by the known method. in one direction, up to at least twice their original length, at a temperature between 70 and 120 C, then in the perpendicular direction, at a temperature between 140 and 190 C.
The blaxially stretched sheet is then kill-fixed after being placed in a frame to prevent shrinkage, at a temperature varying between 150 and 225 * 0. Lori from the second stretch, the leaves tear easily at the edges, especially when they are twink. To prepare

the present invention makes it possible to avoid these difficulties. It relates to a process for the production of objects with a flat surface such as strips, sheets, etc., with oriented molecules. of linear organic polymers, mainly

being obtained by biaxial stretching in two stages, that is to say first in one direction, then perpendicular to that direction, at a temperature above the freezing point of the polymers, the stretching in the first die reotion being carried out in several times.
In particular, the new process facilitates continuous stretching in the second direction.
EMI3.4
As examples of oristalliable polymers which can be treated by the process of the present invention, mention will be made of polyethylene terephthalate, polyolefins, for example polypropylene, polyhexamethylene-adlpamice, polyoapronamide, polyhexaaethylene-sebacamide and roll- m-xylylene-adipamlde
An essential characteristic of the present invention resides in the fact that in order to obtain an object with a flat surface, stretched blaxially, exhibiting better mechanical properties, for example greater resistance to breakage, said object made of polymers in principle
EMI3.5
amorphous, oristallizable, is stretched, in the first direction, in several times, o 'that is to say about 2 to 6 times,
at a temperature above the freezing point of the polymer,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
preferably up to 60 C au-dole from this point. This results in the degree of crystallization of the stretched polymer being kept as low as possible. An object with a flat surface treated under these conditions can then be much more easily stretched in the second direction *
Stretching of the sheet can be accomplished by any method under tension.
Transfers in the first direction can be made, for example, between two sets of cylinders, one of which rotates at a greater speed than the other. Stretching perpendicular to the first, can then be effected with the use of clamps moving away from each other or with the aid of other similar devices.
By applying the principle of the present invention to polyethylene terephthalate, for example, a sheet made of essentially amorphous polymers is stretched, first in a direction between 70 and 130 C in two or more times, in total to 1.3-4.5 times the original length.
The degree of stretch is in each case from 1, 1 to 2 liver, preferably 1.3 to 1.8 times the previous length. the stretching in the perpendicular direction is also carried out between
70 and 130 0. It is 1.2-4.5 times, preferably 1.5-
3 times the original length.
Stretching in both directions can be followed by heat setting carried out under usual conditions.
To this end, the sheet is placed, for example in a frame, at temperatures of between 50 ° C. above the freezing point and the melting point of the polymer, ensuring that it retains its dimensions. In the case of polyethylene terephthalate, the melting zone is between 250 and 255 * 0 and the freezing point is at 69 C.
