<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

RADIOACTIVE LIGHTNING LIGHTNING PERFECTION
Radioactive lightning rods are known in which the extent of the protection zone and the efficiency of this protection are notably increased compared to conventional devices, by using a radioactive surface which, around the tip of the lightning rod , performs ionization of the ambient air, which increases its conductivity *
In the most perfected devices of this kind, the particles emitted by the radioactive surface are accelerated by two annular conductive elements arranged on either side of the radioactive surface, one of these elements. being connected to earth by
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
through the metal rod of the lightning rod,
the other being connected to exciter antennas and thus being brought in the event of a storm to a high potential, the field thus formed between the two conductive elements accelerating the particles emitted by the radioactive surface. This is in particular the case of the device described in the fransis 1 patent.
016.625 filed on April 24, 1950 in the name of the plaintiff,
The present invention relates to a lightning rod of this type in which the radioactive surface is replaced by an assembly of ionizing studs of standardized dimensions, which on the one hand allows adjustment of the intensity of the radioactive radiation by suppression or ad - junction of studs, these studs being, on the other hand, easier to manufacture and to store than the radioactive surfaces used previously and under the best safety conditions for the personnel in a pre- oise way, it is possible to manufacture and store these plots by taking all the regulatory precautions decreed by "EURATOM" with regard to the handling of radioactive products.
The description which will follow and the appended drawing, given above all by way of example, will make it easier to understand how the invention can be implemented. Reference will be made to the appended drawing, the single figure of which represents an embodiment of the device according to the invention.
In this figure, the right part represents a side view of this device, and the left part an axial section of this same device.
In this embodiment, the metal rod of the lightning rod 1 is provided with an insulating part 2 comprising a groove 3; in this groove are arranged dard ionizing studs 4 disposed a ring around the rod 1 These studs 4 are generally cylindrical, with a
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
retaining shoulder 4a, and a slightly concave upper surface 4b. These studs are capped by a metal crown 5, in circular orifices in which they engage up to their shoulders 4a. This crown 5 is mounted on the insulating part 2 by bolts or rivets 6. The assembly formed by the crown 5 and the ionizing studs 4 has a frustoconical surface with the same axis as the rod 1 and facing outwards with respect to this rod.
This facilitates the flow of rainwater, with the resulting cleaning.
The metal ring 5 is electrically connected on the one hand to another metal part 5a which covers the groove 3 below the ionizing pads 4, and, on the other hand, to excitation antennas 7 forming position sockets. These exciter antennas can be mounted at the periphery of the crown 5 by means of bolts or rivets 6. Thus is constituted one of the two excitatory elements of the radioactive emission. The other extractor element consists of a metal ring 8 connected to the rod 1 which earths it, for example by means of a conductor 9.
The pads 4 are made of ceramic and covered with an enamel containing radioactive salts. While the fabrication of the radioactive crowns used previously was very delicate because of the difficulty in obtaining a uniform distribution of radioactive salts (generally insoluble) over the surface of the crown, the small size and shape of the rings. pads 4 make it easy to manufacture on an automatic machine, either by soaking in a radioactive solution or suspension, or by depositing on the surface of a metered solution or suspension, for example by means of one of the devices used in the manufacture

cation of pharmaceuticals.
This avoids any contamination of the workshop by radioactive products, allows personnel to be effectively protected against radiation and ensures a constant and controllable dosage of the ionizing effect. In the case of a deposit of radioactive product, the concavity of the surface 4b of the pads which receives the radioactive product prevents the product from spreading along the cylindrical walls of the pad 4, which further increases manufacturing safety.
In addition, the safe handling and storage of these small sized studs thus produced can be very easily provided, for example in lead cylinders with an inside diameter slightly greater than the overall diameter of the studs.
Thus, the use of such ionizing studs for the equipment of radioactive lightning rods offers total safety in manufacturing, storage and handling, all these operations being carried out in particular in accordance with the safety standards required by "EURATOM". ".
On the other hand, the presence of several pads allows the installer of radioactive lightning rods according to the invention to adjust the intensity of the radioactive radiation of the device, by adding or removing pads, according to the particular conditions of the installation. - lation and average meteorological data.
