"Preparation of catalysts and methods of using them"
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of catalysts, especially catalysts of interest for the isomerization of olefinic hydrocarbons, as well as to an isomerization process in which such catalysts are employed.
According to the present invention there is provided a process for preparing a catalyst suitable for the isomerization of olefinic hydrocarbons by the migration of a double.

bond to a more centrally located position, which comprises the dispersion of an alkali metal alkenyl on an anhydrous solid support material which preferably consists of or contains a Lewis acid and more preferably present. also, a surface area of at least 25 m2 per gram.
Although the alkenyls of any alkali metal can be used in the preparation of the catalysts, it is preferred to employ the sodium and / or potassium alkenyls.
Alkenyls can be prepared by any of the methods well known in the art and are suitably absorbed or dispersed on the support material from a non-aqueous solution.
One source of alkali metal alkenyls is in the use of alkali metal catalysts, supported or not, in other olefin conversion processes.
It has been established that alkenyls are invariably present in the product streams resulting from these processes and can be recovered from these streams for use in the present invention. A process of; Conversion of olefins, wherein the alkenyls are to be found in the product stream, consists of the dimerization of propylene in the presence of a catalyst comprising a dispersion of an alkali metal on an anhydrous potassium compound. Such a process, in which the alkali metal has an atomic number of less than 19, is described and claimed in British Patent Applications Nos. 43558/60 and 38893/61. The catalyst preferably consists of a 4-6% by weight dispersion of elemental sodium on anhydrous potassium carbonate.
The product stream from such a process consists of metylpentenes, in which 4-methylpentene-1 is the predominant isomer, which stream contains significant amounts of C6 alkenyls of both sodium and potassium. Another catalytic system having substantially the

It is a feature of the present invention that olefin isomerization catalysts can be prepared by absorption on an anhydrous solid support material,

Suitable support materials which can be used in the present invention are super air silica.

high twine, silica-alumina and various variants of alumina, such as gamna-alumina. Other suitable materials are magnesium bromide, magnesium sulfate, zinc chloride, and certain ion exchange resins, containing hydroxyl groups (eg of the phenol-formaldehyde type). The preferred support material is anhydrous gamma alumina having a surface area of 50 square meters per gram.
According to another aspect of the present invention,

A process is provided for the isolation of olefinic hydroearburas which comprises contacting this hydrocarbon with a catalyst which is prepared by the process described above.
EMI3.5
In particular, the catalyst prepared by the process of the present invention is suitable for effecting the migration of a double bond in mono-olefins having terminal deactivation, for example alpha mono-olefins having 5: z. 10 carbon atoms per molecule. Straight chain olefins and branched chain bzz olefins can be zomerized.

methylpentene-1 can be made to give 4-methylpentene-2 or 2-methylpcntene-2 by modifying the contact time between the olefin and the catalyst and / or the reaction temperature.
The catalysts prepared according to the present invention may be suitable for use in batch processes or in continuous processes. High conversions can be obtained by using operating conditions in which the temperatures are constituted by ambient temperature and the pressures are of the order of atmospheric pressure. pherical.
