<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Afin de bien faire comprendre la présente invention , une forme d'exécution préférée en sera décrite ci-après, à titre d'exemple, avec référence aux dessins annexés, dans lesquels la fige 1 est' une coupe d'un dispositif de reproduction construit suivant l'invention} la tie. 2 est une coupe suivant la ligne 2-2 de la fig. 1 la tige 3 est une vue du dessus du dispositif de repro.. duction représenta sur la fig.1 la fig' 4 est une coupe suivant la ligne 4-4 de la fig.1; la fig 5 est une vue en perspective explosée de cer- tains éléments du dispositifde reproduction; la fige 6 est une coupe horizontale à plus grande échel- le suivant la ligne 6-6 de la fig 2;

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

Reproductive apparatus intended for use with sound recorders. rubble,
The present invention relates to these electro-mechanical devices. utilities for reproducing signals recorded on an engraved record holder * More particularly,
the invention relates to a device suitable for ensuring that the style of reproduction engages in the recording groove of such a record holder and not in the unregistered false groove formed on the "flat" separating two fins of adjacent record.
As described in African Patent No. 2,819,089 issued January 7, 1958 to Williams et al. recorders using engraved record holders, for example plastic record holders such as acetubutyrate
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
cellulose, a known problem August the name of "blind tracking" when playing the recording.
This problem arises because the material of the record holder is pushed back by the recording style so as to form two slopes located on either side of the recording groove, thus forming a false groove on the "flat". separating two input furrows. adjacent grooves * If the play style, when placed * on the record holder falls into this false groove, an unintelligible combination of the signals recorded in the adjacent grooves is reproduced.
Since in the known conventional recorders the two slopes were relatively high, the realization of a device for automatically shifting the reproduction style of the false groove in the recording groove has posed difficult problems.
The invention disclosed in the aforementioned U.S. Patent No. 2,819,089 substantially minimizes the severity of this problem by using a method of recording in which style. recording is tilted sideways at a noticeable angle.
The result obtained by this arrangement is that the material of the record holder pushed back by the record style is displaced predominantly from one side of the record groove. However, one of the slopes formed along the recording groove is notably lower than if the point had not been inclined laterally, but the other slope is raised to a corresponding extent. By almost eliminating one of the slopes in this manner, it becomes possible to provide a device for automatically moving the reproduction style of the false groove into the recording groove.
The arrangement proposed in US Pat. No. 2,819.09 for moving the reproduction style of the false groove in the recording groove is to provide an offset weight on the reproduction arm so as to move the center of gravity of that arm in the same way. away from the normal axis connecting the style to the pivot on which the arm is mounted. This offset weight therefore creates
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
a force urging the arm laterally in a direction forcing the style to exit at the false groove, cross the low slope and enter the recording groove where all lateral movement is stopped by the higher slope.
However, it has been found in practice that this embodiment using the reproduction arm as well as other similar embodiments to move the reproduction style laterally have not been as effective as desired. to say that with these achievements, there is still a statistically true risk, albeit low, that the breeding style will remain in the wrong groove once it has landed there.
In addition, the arm-straining devices (reproduction used hitherto, by continually biasing the style against a flank of the recording groove during playback, introduce unwanted noise and altercations of the sound *
However, it is the object of the present invention to provide a superior reproduction apparatus for use with engraved record carriers. It is also an object of the invention to provide a signal reproducing apparatus capable of effectively eliminating the blind tracking problems posed by such bass recorders.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved device for automatically moving a reproduction style of the false groove of a record holder engraved in the recording groove and which is capable of following the recording groove without being. altered stress during reproduction.
The present invention consists of a device which reproduction for use with bass recorders having a large number of substantially parallel recording grooves separated by a flat on which a style of reproduction is likely to rest, said device. comprising a support capable of moving towards the record holder,
the support being provided with a mounting device for a head of

reproduction capable of allowing the medium to move more when the reproduction style is in contact with the record holder and a mechanism responsive to this displacement and capable of moving the style transversely to the recording groove so that the style passes a false sil ion located between two adjacent recording grooves in one of these recording grooves.
In order to make the present invention fully understood, a preferred embodiment will be described hereinafter, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which the figure 1 is a section of a reproduction device constructed. according to the invention} the tie. 2 is a section taken along line 2-2 of FIG. 1 the rod 3 is a top view of the reproduction device shown in Fig.1, Fig '4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig.1; Fig. 5 is an exploded perspective view of certain elements of the reproduction device; fig 6 is a horizontal section on a larger scale taken along line 6-6 of fig 2;
and, Fig. 7 is a schematic view, not entirely to scale, showing the sectional aspect of the bass recording grooves.
Before describing the present invention in detail, it will be noted that it is represented in: application to a machine ,. commercial dictate of the type described in Belgian patent 632.605 of May 20, 1963 which describes in detail its operation,
Fig 1 shows a reproducing device 10 comprising a reproducing head 12 including a stylus 14 which engages a cuff-type plastic record holder 61 supported on a rotary drive mandrel 18.
Comma explained in detail below, the reproduction device

10 is mounted on a carriage 20 which can be driven laterally,

The reproduction device 10 is supported on the

carriage 20 essentially of the zbae taqjn than in the aforementioned patent.
This assembly makes it possible to separate the reproduction head 12 from the recording holder 16 for example to make the carriage return back blood slide the etyle 14 on the surface of the recording holder For this purpose, as shown
EMI5.4
fig. 5, the reproduction device is mounted on uniras c. support 22 comprising a nozzle 24 which is pivot flx <5th. , by a screw 26 to an upright 28 of the carriage 20. The arm is biased in the direction of clockwise fi, g.1) by a small coil spring 30 which normally determines the contact pressure between the style and the holder. recording during playback.
EMI5.5
To retract the style:. "The support arm 22 is rotated anti-clockwise (t18.1) by means of a spring or.ua of a relatively rigid metal wire 32 which is wound around the nozzle 24 The upper end of this spring is anchored by a screw 34 but its lower end has a finger 36 which is engaged in a hole 38 made in a slide 40 mounted on the carriage 20.
This slide can be moved towards the rear of the dictation machine.
EMI5.6
That is, to the right in Fig. 1 and when so moving it attacks the finger 36 and thus exerts on the support arm 22 a force tending to rotate the reproducing device 10 in it. counterclockwise to move away the playback style from the record holder.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
A pivot 42 extends forward from the support arm 22 and carries a vertical support flange 44 which rotates through a conventional bushing lubricated by a very viscous silicone (not shown;, A copper-beryo flat spring 48 is riveted to one side 46 of this flange with which it makes a small angle and carries a vertical support plate 50 to its other extracted. This plate is provided with two horizontal forked arms 52 shaped to receive and retain the casemaker. plastic material 54 of the reproduction head 12 The flat spring 48 urges the plate 50 in a sound system inset from the flange 44 but movement in this sound system is limited by a teat button 56 which passes through a buttonhole 58 in the flange
support (see layout in fig 2).
The flap 44 is also provided with a horizontal guide heel 60 which, when the reproducing device 10 is moved away from the record holder 16, engages a positive centering device 62 comprising two opposing cones mounted on the carriage. 20. Thus, when the style 14 is retracted from the record holder, it is automatically centered in a predetermined angular position relative to the pivot 42 on which the flange 44 is mounted four re-engage the style 14 with the record holder 16 one moves the slider 40 to the left (fig1) in order to free the Plastiqua finger 36 and allow the coil spring 30 to rotate the support arm 22 clockwise.
The flange this support 44 is stitquemtn balanced around the pivot 42 and this balancing, combined with the high silicone viscosity lubricating the ring provided on the pivot 42, ensures that the flange 44 does not rotate despite the guide heel 60 being more engaged with the centering device 62. The spring 30 therefore moves the style 14 directly towards the record holder 16 until it comes into contact with it, so as to prevent any further displacement of the style in that sense.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
Once the style 14 is in contact with the record holder 16 the force of the spring 30 is applied against the piaf spring 48 and overcomes the return of that spring. The support flange 44 therefore continues to move towards the support plate 50, this movement being allowed by the lost movement link comprising the button 56 which passes through the buttonhole 58. Following this new displacement of the flange 44 the control plate support 50 in fact pivots around the side edge 46 of the flange 44 in a position in which it is in close contact with this flask, as indicated in dotted lines in fig.6.
When the support plate 50 has been brought into contact with the flange 44 the reproduction style 14 has been moved laterally in a corresponding manner with respect to the flange 44 due to the geometry of the associated parts. This relative displacement iique by the number 64 is shown exaggerated in fig6 for representative purposes.
In the embodiment of the invention disclosed, the geometry of the construction provides for lateral displacement of the styling relative to the flange 44 of approximately 0.005 inch (0.13 mm).
It will now be assumed that the style 44 initially comes to rest on one of the pins 66 of the record holder 16 as shown in fig 7, the lateral displacement of the style after this initial contact with the record holder being sufficient to pass the style through. -above the lower slope 68 in the next adjacent recording groove 70 While the style undergoes this relatively rapid lateral location,
the support flange 44 is effectively prevented from pivoting about the pivot 42 by the high viscosity (eg 200,000 centicises) of silicone lubricating the bearing ring provided between these two parts.
Any tendency of the style to move beyond the recording groove is obviously prevented by the high slope 72 located on the other side of the recording groove,
The pitch of recording grooves on record holder 16 is typically set to give a distance
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
mean center distance between recording grooves of about 0.005 inch (0.13 mm) Normally, the spacing between a plate 66 and the adjacent groove 70 is about 0.003 inch (0.07 mm) Thus, if the style lands on the flat, the lateral displacement of 0.005 inch (0.13 mm)
style with respect to flap 44 is sufficient to displace style in the recording groove. Any excess lateral displacement of the style is absorbed by movement lost in the system, for example a displacement of the flange 44 around the silicone lubricated bushing mounted on the pivot 42, it can also be noticed that once the plate 50 has been moved into its reproducing position in contact with the flange 44 the flat spring 48 extending in a dirc tion effectively parallel to the surface of the record holder where it is engaged by the styling, no other force tends to apply the style laterally. The style can therefore float freely in the recording otherwise and give optimum reproduction characteristics.
In the event that the style 44 immediately lands in the recording groove 70, the subsequent pivoting of the support plate 50 around the flat spring 84 shown in dotted lines in Fig. 6 simply rotates the support flange 44 around its pivot 42 instead of pushing the style out of the recording groove.
This is because the resistance to displacement of flask 44 exhibited by the silicone lubricated bearing ring on pivot 42 is less than the resistance to displacement of style 14 offered by the flank of the recording groove, in particular. when this flank is extended upwards by the high slope 72 However, once the style is engaged without the registration groove, it remains in this otherwise until it is retracted or removed from the carrier. recording as described above.
It sometimes happens during breeding that the cart
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
does not advance exactly at the speed required to keep style 14 in line with the helical recording groove on record holder 16. This lack of synchronism is compensated for by pivoting of the support flange 44 around its pivot 42 As pivoting of the flask is very slow in these cases,
the relatively high viscosity of the lubricating silicone the bearing ring mounted on the pivot 42 does not hinder the required pivoting of this flange * the flange 44 is also provided with horizontal ridges 74 capable of engaging the top of the support arm 22 for prevent excessive pivoting of the flange.
