Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  A method and pressure control apparatus for electric arc welding under protection of an inert gas.

   The present invention relates to the electric arc sound by means of an unfused electrode under the protection of an inert gas.

   When a weld is made by this method, a pocket of molten metal is formed and can be deformed under the action of gravity and, on cooling, this deformed pocket can produce an unwanted profile weld. This undesirable effect can often be avoided to a satisfactory extent by increasing the gas pressure in the vicinity of the weld, but this expediency is not sufficient when the weld is carried out under conditions such that different parts of the weld are differently affected by the weld. gravity.

   A case in point is the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 butt cutting of tubes whose axes form an angle with the vertical, in which, at certain points of the weld, gravity tends to cause the molten metal to sag or to move away from the parts to be welded while that in other respects it has a different or even opposite effect.

   According to the invention, means are provided for modifying the pressure of the inert gas atmosphere as required during the welding operation and, in the preferred embodiment of the invention, this modification is . performed automatically.

   The measurement and timing of the change in pressure depends on the nature of the welding operation to be performed, the mass of molten metal and other factors and must be predetermined experimentally or otherwise. The modification can go from a maximum pressure to a minimum depression.

   The extent to which the pressure must be changed to produce a useful result is surprisingly small. For example, to butt weld heat exchange tubes having an inside diameter of about 1/2 inch (1.27 cm), both tubes being held horizontally during welding so that the weld metal tends in sagging at the upper part of the joint and sinking into the walls of the tube at the lower part of the joint, it has been found that it is sufficient to provide a pressure above atmospheric pressure not exceeding 1 , 2 inches (3.05 cm) of water to prevent sagging and a vacuum of not more than 1.6 inches (4.06 cm) of water to prevent recess.

   The invention has been developed in particular for internally butt welding of thin tubes placed with their horizontal axes and, for this purpose, one can use an electrode holder of the kind described in British Patent No. 913.207 of the Application. - but without being limited to it. -
An example of the practical application of the invention will be described below, by way of example, with reference to the drawings.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 appended in which: FIG. 1 schematically represents the welding defect that the invention corrects; fig. 2 is a schematic view of the system; fig. 3 is a schematic view of a control valve provided in the system; and, FIG. 4 is a section taken along line IV-IV of FIG. 3.

   It is assumed that the operation to be performed consists in butt welding the two tubes held horizontally T, and
T '(fig. 1) from the inside of the tubes using an electrode holder
WT of the type specified, this electrode holder comprising a rotating electrode driven via a flexible shaft by a motor M and being supplied with argon or an energetic gas via a pipe A. The weld which is thus formed comprising a ring of molten metal coming in a vertical plane.

   Before solidifying, the metal contained in the arc going from about the o'clock position to the 2 o'clock position tends to sag or move away from the inner surface of the tubes as indicated at X in fig. 1 and that contained in the arc going from about the 4 o'clock position to the 8 o'clock position (assuming full penetration which is essential to achieve a good weld) tends to buckle or move away from the surface outside of the tubes as shown in Y.

   To counteract these trends, we. maintains in the tubes, according to the invention, a pressure greater than atmospheric pressure during welding on the arc for 10 to 2 hours and a pressure below atmospheric pressure during welding on the arc for 4 to 8 hours, the pressure maintained during the welding on the arc from 2 to 4 hours and the arc from 8 to 10 hours being substantially atmospheric.

   To this end, in the example described below, the gas outlet end of the tubes is periodically connected to a pressure greater than atmospheric pressure, less than atmospheric pressure and equal to the latter, the arrival of gas at the remaining inlet end

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 constant throughout the welding period, i.e. while the electrode is rotated 360 by the motor M,
As shown in fig 2, the outlet end of the tubes is connected by a pipe P to a rotary control valve CV (shown in figs. 3 and 4) driven by the motor M via a reducer. R so as to rotate 3600 in synchronism with the electrode.

   The valve (figs. 3 and 4) has a fixed body. 10 in which is mounted a rotor 12 traversed by a passage 14. An end 14a of this passage can, when the rotor rotates, be brought into communication with lo apertures (fig.4) which open to the atmosphere. or with a light 18 which opens towards a fan or another source of vacuum V (fig.2). 'other end 14b of passage 14 terminates in a circumferential groove
20 X arranged in the rotor 12 so as to be always in communication with an exit light 22 communicating by the pipe
P with the gas outlet end of the tubes to be welded.

   Assuming the weld is initiated at the 4 o'clock position and the electrode is driven clockwise. of a watch, a vacuum is applied to the outlet end of the tubes while the electrode moves from this position to the 8 o'clock position, the body 10 being cut into 24 (fig. 4) so that the passage 14 communicates with the suction lumen 18 during this movement. At the 8 o'clock position, passage 14. communicates with one of the atmospheric lights 16 (the body 10 being cut into 26) and this communication persists until the 10 o'clock position.

   From the 10 o'clock position to the 2 o'clock position, passage 14 does not communicate with any light and from the 2 o'clock position to the 4 o'clock position it is in communication with the other atmospheric light 16.

   Thus, the gas pressure in the tubes is equal, from the 4 o'clock position to the 8 o'clock position, to the supply pressure of the silver minus the vacuum applied to the end of the tubes, from position 8 hours at the 10 o'clock position and

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 the 2 o'clock position to the 4 o'clock position, this pressure is atmospheric and from the 10 o'clock position to the 2 o'clock position, it is equal to the argon feed pressure. Thus, a cycle of different pressures of the desired kind is obtained to avoid harmful sagging or spreading of the molten metal of the weld.

   As indicated, the variation in pressure required to produce the desired result is small. In general, a pressure above atmospheric pressure of about 1.2 inches (3.05 cm) of water and a vacuum of about 1.6 inches (4.06 cm) of water will suffice. But these numbers can go up to 2.5 inches (6.35 cm).
