<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Device comprising at least one cylinder in which a piston can move.
The invention relates to a device comprising at least one cylinder in which a piston can move which modifies the volume of an active enclosure, the seal between the piston and the wall of the cylinder being formed by a wound membrane, one surface of which participates in delimiting this active enclosure, the other surface of which is in contact with a liquid, while means are provided for maintaining a practically constant pressure on said membrane, at least by piston stroke.
In devices of this kind, it is important that the membrane remains tensioned during operation, but that the stress of the membrane does not reach a value such that there is a risk of rupture.

In addition, for the longevity of the membrane, it is advantageous that the pressure acting on the membrane is practically constant *

This known construction has a drawback: for one reason or another, the quantity of liquid under the membrane varies, or that, as a result of irregularities in the rigid walls, the volume of this enclosure does not remain constant, the pressure on the membrane. and therefore, the constraint thereof vary.

If a non-elastic membrane is used in the

axial direction during an it-4te in the enclosure under the membrane, all the pressure prevailing in the active enclosure would be applied to the membrane, which could cause the rupture of this one * L91r-ventlon eliminates this risk because the elastic members always hold the piston against the liquid, so that the membrane remains in contact with said liquid.
In devices of the type mentioned, it is advantageous to regularly renew the liquid in the enclosure formed.

extremely simple and compact,
The description of the appended drawing, drawn by way of non-limiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented, the particularities which emerge both from the text and from the drawing, of course, forming part of the invention.
Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 show schematically and in section four piston-cylinder combinations
In fig. 1, a piston 2 moves in a cylinder
1. An end surface of the piston delimits an active enclosure 3, for example the compression enclosure of a compressor or else the compression or expansion enclosure of a hot gas piston machine. The other end surface of piston 2 is in contact with a column of liquid 4, which in turn is in contact with a piston 5, which a connecting rod 6 connects to a crank 7, which is driven in a manner not shown in the drawing. The seal between pistons 2 and 5 of cylinder 1 is formed by a coiled membrane 8.
To the enclosure 4 is connected an adjustment device, ensuring a constant pressure on the membrane 8 and a determined circulation of liquid in the enclosure 4, in order to prevent an excessive concentration of gaseous fluid which may be diffused in the chamber. through the membrane. This adjustment device comprises a liquid pump 9, which makes it possible to bring liquid to the enclosure 4 through the pipe 10. A pipe 11 is also connected to the enclosure 4, which opens into the enclosure 12 formed by 'one side of the membrane 13. The enclosure 14, formed on the other side of the membrane 13, communicates with the active enclosure 3, via a pipe 15.
The pipes 11 and 15 are made in such a way that the average pressures prevailing in the enclosures 4 and 3 also prevail in the enclosures 12 and 14. The membrane 13 carries a valve 16 which can block the discharge pipe 17. On the membrane 13 also acts a pressure spring 18, which causes a determined pressure to act on said membrane. The adjustment can obviously be done in another way.
On the piston 2 act one or more springs
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
pressure 19, which ensure that the pressure of the liquid in the enclosure 4 is continuously lower, by an amount determined than the pressure prevailing in the active enclosure 3. These springs have a characteristic curve that is practically level, of, aort that any modification of the spacing between the pistons does not modify the pressure or hardly.
When, for any reason whatsoever, the quantity of liquid discharged from the enclosure 4 is greater than that supplied by the pipe 10, this will not result in any unfortunate consequences for the membrane 8. The springs 19 will be compressed and the spacing entered the pistons 2 and 5 decreases. When, subsequently, the supply of liquid exceeds the discharge, the distance between the pistons returns to its initial value. All this has practically no effect on the membrane. It is continuously supported by the liquid and the pressure remains constant. A simple and reliable protection against insufficient support of the membrane has therefore been obtained.
It is therefore evident that, in the construction according to the invention, the membrane need not necessarily be elastic. The function of the elasticity of the membrane is, in a way, assumed by the piston 2 floating on the liquid. The membrane can therefore be made of a material that is not elastic in the axial direction.
In fig. 1, the concave surface of the membrane faces towards the active enclosure 3. The construction according to the invention is also suitable for membranes, the convex surface of which faces towards the active enclosure. Fig. 2 shows such a construction; the parts corresponding to those of FIG. 1 bear the same reference numbers as on this one.
In order to keep the membrane taut, the pressure prevailing in the enclosure 4 must be greater than that prevailing in the active enclosure 3. For this purpose, the springs 19 are here tension springs. The operation is similar to that of the device according to FIG. 1.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
In the form of construction according to fig. 3, the conjugate walls of cylinder 1 and piston 5 are stepped. The
EMI6.1
annular eurtacas 20 and 21 thus formed are equal. From this taltt the variations in volume caused by the displacement of the annular surface 21 are compensated for by the variations in volume

The pump 24 brings liquid to the enclosure 4 through the

pipe 25., which increases 1'écartemen.1 between the pistons 2 ot 5, As a result the holes 23 reach above the piston 5, so that the liquid of the chamber 4 can flow back to the housing. When the quantity of liquid supplied to the chamber is too
EMI6.6
small leayteaent between pistons 2 and 5 decreases, so holes 23 are blocked. A very reliable adjustment is thus obtained, making it possible to maintain constant 'the spacing between the pistas 2 and-5. Therefore, the pressure difference between the
EMI6.7
in 6sA enclosures 4- and 3 remains constant.
This adjustment using a pin is also suitable for use in the devices according to fig. 1 and 2. Although derin * or devices the gap between pistons 2 and 5 varies somewhat during piston stroke, holes 23 can be made in the spindle so that they are only opened in the upper position. or lower.
