"STYRYIIFAPHTOXAZOTES TOUR AZURAGE OPTIQUE".-
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

Le procédé utilisé est décrit en général de la manière suivante ;

<Desc/Clms Page number 17>

"STYRYIIFAPHTOXAZOTES TOUR AZURAGE OPTIC" .-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
This in ention relates to optical brighteners (sometimes called optical brighteners). The present invention is based on the discovery that 2-styrylnaphtho 1,2-doxazole (as well as related compounds), a compound which has not yet been synthesized so far, is capable of bleaching a noted group. - a variety of materials. The compound largely dispenses its bleaching power that polymeric supports of many and varied types, whether natural or synthetic, woven or rigid-solid fabric, of the hydrocarbon type or the like, can be. optically bleached by treatment with this compound.
This behavior contrasts with that of known bleaching agents which, although they are normally effective for a single selected carrier or for a few carriers, exert little or no effect on a majority of commonly encountered polymers. The compound according to the present invention can be ground hot in the polymeric material (particularly in the case of synthetic polymers) or applied to them with the aid of a solution or even with the aid of a bath. aqueous (even in the presence of bleaching agents such as hypochlorite or perborate).
Such indifference to elevated temperatures, solvents and hypochlorites is not only extremely useful but is also quite unusual. Most bleach or brighteners can resist some type of "strain" but very few of them,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
if any, are stable under all these conditions.
The "universality" of the optical brightening or bleaching agent according to the present invention, together with its stability during its application and use, makes it truly unique in its field. The present invention will become more easily understood by those skilled in the art on reading the description which follows.
The class of compounds to which 2-styrylnapht- [1,2-d] oxazole belongs is represented by structural formula (1):
EMI3.1
in which A and B are different and represent oxygen or nitrogen and the symbols R represent individually hydrogen, alkyl radicals of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, chlorine or fluorine. In the above formula. one of the hydrogen atoms of the vinylene radical can be replaced by a methyl group or chlorine. In formula I, when all the symbols R represent hydrogen and A represent oxygen, the derivative specifically mentioned above is obtained.
This compound was not previously known as such, although the formula by which it is represented is found in title form in "Beilstein" Vol. 27, page 83, 1937, 4th edition. None of the other naphthoxazoles encompassed by formula 1 are known as such or described by formula.
Although as indicated above, the compounds according to the present invention may possess several substitutes.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
However, for reasons of convenience and economy, it is preferred to use the less substituted compounds. It is surprising and advantageous that the compound having no substituents pap is:
as interesting as others involving substituents, since in the case of conventional and previously known bleach compounds one or two substituents were required to give the basic molecular structure some degree of solubility. ity in water or dispersibility in water or for chan-? manage its fluorescence shade or increase its affinity for the support to be brightened,
The compounds according to the present invention can be prepared in a number of different ways, In one of their methods of preparation,

organic such as pyridine, chlorobenzene, dichlorobenzene or acetone. The temperatures can vary between 50 C and the reflux temperature. The intermediate product is obtained in the form of an insoluble precipitate or, when the solvent is miscible with water, by immersing the product of the reaction in water.
The cyclization reaction to give the final product is also carried out at an elevated temperature, in a solvent and in the presence of an acid catalyst. The temperature during the cyclization will be between 80 and 300 ° C. As suitable solvents, there may be mentioned o-dichlorobenzene, xylene, ethanol, monochlorobenzene. The product can be separated from the mixture. reaction, after neutralization of the excess acid catalyst, by distillation or by steam stripping of the solvent.
The product thus obtained can be used without going through special purification procedures and with good results. However, in order to obtain better results, the bleach can be separated from secondary products using conventional chromatographic methods.
The products thus obtained, in particular the unsubstituted compound in which A represents oxygen, are eminently suitable as optical brightening or optical whitening agents. When incorporated into polymeric materials, they improve the gloss of the material to a considerable extent. The great difference between the compounds according to the present invention and the known optical brighteners lies in their tolerance to various methods of application and their affinity for many polymeric supports as well as in their effectiveness for. these.
The flexibility associated with the use and application of these
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
These compounds are not found in commercially known optical brighteners and easily compensate for the fact that they are not as effective as a specialist optical brightener for its chosen medium. It is, however, interesting to note that in the important field of nylon, the optical brighteners of the present invention are in practice better than many commercial nylon optical brighteners.
The most important advantage of optical brighteners according to the present invention is that they are widely applicable for domestic uses. A substance having good affinity for various carriers, such as cotton, nylon, polyester and polypropylene, at the low temperatures of domestic applications was not yet known. Likewise, it is quite unusual for said properties to exist when applied with various household washing agents, such as soaps, softeners, detergents and bleaches, as well as with combinations of these agents as are commonly used. These results are unexpected and surprising due to the behavior of a multitude of other bleaching agents known in the trade.
The class of polymers to which the compounds according to the present invention are applicable covers virtually the entire field of polymers. Both natural and synthetic polymers can be improved with the optical brightening agents according to the present invention. Among the natural polymers, mention may be made of cotton (including cotton treated with resin), wool and silk.
Synthetic plastics of any type can also be improved by the present invention.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
Materials derived from cellulose, such as viscose rayon, nitrocellulose and cellulose acetate can be processed. Polyesters, polyurethanes, polyoxymethylenes, poly-Ó-olefins, polyacrylonitriles, polyacrylates, polyvinyl halides, polystyrenes, phenolic resins, epoxy resins and alkyd resins can also be processed. may be cited, but it follows from the aforementioned list of compounds that the optical brighteners or optical brighteners according to the present invention are suitable for an extremely wide number of materials.
In the case of certain textile materials (eg cotton, nylon, polyesters, etc.) it is common to add optical brightening agents using an aqueous swab or bath. by exhaustion containing a tensjo-active agent (for example a substance preventing the redeposition of dirt, a soap, a detergent and / or an anionic, nonionic or cationic softener). Bleaching agents according to the present invention can also be deployed. The aqueous bath may contain auxiliary substances such as anti-static agents, etc., without interfering in any way with the practice of the present invention. It is of course very important that blends of textiles, such as cotton-polyester, rayon-acetate and nylon-cotton blends, etc., can be processed at the same time.
Certain textile materials, such as cotton and nylon, are usually bleached using an aciae bath treatment during processing. The bleaching agents according to the present invention lend themselves admirably to this method of application because of their excellent.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
stability in the presence of acids.
Some polymeric materials are best bleached during a forming operation. For example, some polymers are made into fibers from a viscous spinning mass. Examples of this type of polymeric material include polyester, polyacrylic resins, rayon and polyamides. Other polymeric materials are formed by grinding or molding granules or fragments of the polymer. Both of the aforementioned types can be improved with respect to brightening by adding a brightening or bleaching agent according to the present invention to the viscous spinning mass or to the polymer granules or fragments. The bleaching agent can be incorporated along with other customary additives, such as colorants, stabilizers, plasticizers and / or extenders.
The bleaching ability is maintained during these operations mainly due to the ability of the bleach according to the present invention to resist inactivation / solvents and decomposition due to high temperatures. Thus, for example, in plastic compositions, such as polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polymethacrylate and polystyrene, the incorporation of the bleaching agent according to the present invention results in a whiter and brighter plastic; this incorporation also improves the appearance of plastics containing pigment, such as titanium dioxide. In floor coverings, the compounds according to the present invention increase the contrast of the pattern.
For such use, good lightfastness and good heat stability are of great importance (c which differs somewhat from textiles), since the
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
The compound must withstand the high temperatures encountered during the manufacture and use of the plastic. In such compositions, it is also useful to supplement the brightening agent with ultraviolet light absorbing agents and / or other stabilizers.
In plastic compositions, in particular. poly-Ó-olefins, such as polyethylene and polyvinyl halides such as polyvinyl chloride, brighteners of the styryl-naphthoxazole type are of particular interest given their good resistance to light and their good resistance to light. heat stability. Other bleaches cause the plastic material to turn yellow after short use, while according to the present invention the plastic compositions remain clear and colorless for extended periods of time.
The optical brightening agents according to the present invention have the great advantage that they can be used in combination with surfactants, softeners, anti-static agents or bleaching agents. . None of the previously used brighteners were compatible with all of these materials and often, when applied in their presence, became ineffective.
As mentioned previously, the brightening agents according to the present invention are applicable with hypochlorite compositions and are effective under such conditions.
Thus, the new brighteners meet a need for "universal" brighteners to a degree not yet reached until now, given that they can be applied to the most diverse supports, from the widest variety of dispersal media.
It was not expected to obtain such results with the compounds of the present invention, since the
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
corresponding unsubstituted compound of the benzoxazole series, i.e. 2-styrylbenzoxazole, described as a brightening agent for polyacrylonitrile and polyvinyl chloride is not effective as an agent. brightening for polymers in general. Unlike the benzoxazole derivative, the corresponding styrylnaphthoxazole has excellent affinity for polymers which are thus bleached or bleached in a durable manner.
The bleaching or brightening agents according to the present invention can be applied in the form of various compositions having concentrations of active brightening agent which are capable of exerting the desired bleaching effect. The various types of compositions can be tailored to the particular method of application. The bleaching agent, can be added to a solvent, to an aqueous or n @ n-aqueous dispersion or used as a dry mixture with a surfactant, a softener, an anti-static agent, a stabilizer. , a plasticizer, an extender or other material.
The effective concentration of the brightening agent is readily determined by ordinary methods. For use in the textile field, brighteners are usually incorporated into the various types of compositions in concentrations between about 0.1% and 0.5%. Normally they are applied from. aqueous baths containing between about 0.005 and 0.01 by weight of bleach.
In plastic compositions such as pblyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polystyrene, etc., the brightening agents according to the present invention can be used in concentrations of between about 0.005 to 0.50% by weight and preferably between about 0.02 and 0.5% by weight.
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
Obviously, a greater or lesser amount of brightening agent can be used to effectively meet the specific bleaching requirements.
The following examples illustrate the present invention without, however, limiting it.
EXAMPLE 1.

This compound is commonly used on cotton and nylon substrates but is ineffective on most other substrates.
He. Vinylene-bis-benzoxazole type
EMI14.2
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
This brightening agent is usually used on cotton, polyesters and acetate but is ineffective on acrylic resins, polyolefins, polystyrenes, etc.
III. Type DAS-Triazine

This brightening agent is used commercially on cotton but it is ineffective on other supports.
IV. Type styrylbenzoazole
EMI15.2
This compound is described as an optical brightening agent in US Pat. No. 2,977,319.
Brightening agents to try are applied to a variety of fabrics including cotton, nylon, viscose rayon, acetate, triacetate, wool, cotton reside treated, polyester, polyacrylonitrile and polypropylene. applications are made using aqueous baths in the presence of various types of dispersing agents including anionic defera gents.
The process used is generally described as follows;
A solution of the optical brightening agent containing 0.005% brightening agent is prepared. To this end, 0.5 g of the bleaching agent is dissolved in 1 liter of solvent to give a solution of 0.05 to 100 ml of this solution.
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
tion are diluted up to 1 liter with water to give a 0.005 solution of bleach,
By way of illustration of a solution such as that mentioned above, the preparation of a 0.005% solution of the bleaching agent of Example 1 is given, this preparation being carried out as follows :
A 100 mg fraction of the bleaching agent is dissolved in 200 ml of dimethylformamide so as to form a 0.05% solution. After clarification, 50 ml of this solution are added to 450 ml of a 1% solution of a nonionic dispersing agent so as to obtain a 0.005% solution. This is the solution used as the test solution.
The amount of the optical brightening agent test solution required to give the designated percent application based on the weight of brightening agent detergent to be used as a brightener. standard is introduced into a launder-o-meter container with a capacity of 0.473 liter; and diluted with 50 ml of 1% anionic detergent and then with sufficient water to give a 100 ml solution. To the solution thus obtained, containing the designated quantity of bleach relative to the weight of the detergent, is added a piece of cotton or other cloth of 5.
This is then treated in a launder-o-meter for a designated time at a designated temperature; the tissue is then removed, rinsed with water and dried. A number of similar applications are made to fabric using varying amounts of the brightening agent test solution to be tested. They are then compared under ultra-violet light to the shade of the brightening agent used as a standard to determine which
<Desc / Clms Page number 17>
the shades and the azure agent to be tested give equal fluorescence under ultraviolet light.
From the quantity of brightening agent to be tested necessary to obtain an equivalent shade by comparison with the standard, the relative strength of the brightening agent to be tested compared to the standard brightening agent is determined. . The fluorescence tint and the whitening effect are also observed.
The details of the preparation of the solution and the application for the various tests are given below.
(The amount of brightening agent used is adjusted according to the actual brightening agent content of the sample under certain circumstances; or the application may be made in certain circumstances on an equal absorbance basis ( baee K equals); or when done on an "as is" basis, the figures may be adjusted for an actual comparison),
