 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

   Des buts et avantages de l'invention qui n'ont pas été exposés spécifiquement ci-dessus apparaîtront mieux à la lecture de la description qui suit, faite en se repor- , tant aux dessins annexés, où : la figure 1 est une vue en perspective, avec des parties enlevées, d'un accessoire de tête de surfaçage cons- truit suivant la présente invention; la figure 2 est une vue en perspective depuis l'avant de l'accessoire;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

 mission.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 16>

On ut donc communi
1

 <Desc/Clms Page number 17>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 18>

 l'arbre.

  "ACCESSORY FOR SURFACING HEAD AND CONTROL MECHANISM
FOR THIS "
The present invention generally relates to machine tools and more particularly to accessories for a continuous feed surfacing head as well as the associated drive mechanisms for machine tools.

   Accessories for face milling heads are usually used to extend the working limits of a machine tool radially to its spindle, in order to perform face milling as well as a large number of others. - many operations on parts to be machined without requiring a substantial displacement of the latter. So far, in practice,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 the face mill head accessories were mounted in a fixed position relative to the spindle sleeve, either on the sleeve itself or on the spindle, and driven by means of a separate pinion.

   A serious drawback of these accessories is that they are supported in a fixed axial position and incapable of ensuring a radial feed of the tool simultaneously with the feed of the spindle and that they are limited to the operations which can be carried out with the spindle. spindle prevented from moving axially.

   The main object of this invention is to provide a boring and face milling head accessory for an expandable rotary spindle constructed so as to provide radial advance of the tool with the spindle which carries it. to progressively spaced positions from the spindle carriage, the radial feed of the tool thus providing an additional positioning axis for the machine.

   Another object is to provide a control for the accessory of the boring and face milling head, which ensures either a progressive radial positioning of the tool, or a continuous radial advance thereof, while the tool is in progress. spindle is rotating for a turning cut.

   Another object is to control a boring and face milling head accessory via the spindle and independently of the external links with the carriage carrying the latter, so that the accessory can be advanced by the spindle when advances the latter to axial positions spaced from the front of the brochb carriage.

   Another object of this invention is to provide a position indicating device transmitting the radial position of a cutting tool on a face milling head attachment to a digital control system, in order to

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 allow automatic positioning of the tool on the face milling head.

   Another object of the present invention is to provide a face milling head attachment and a machine tool spindle where the drive device between the two is completely contained within the spindle made to operate by simply inserting the spindle. accessory of the face milling head in the latter, so that it can be transferred by automatic tool change equipment, in the same way as other tools for the same machine are handled.

   Objects and advantages of the invention which have not been specifically explained above will appear better on reading the following description, made with reference to the accompanying drawings, where: FIG. 1 is a view in perspective, with parts removed, of a face milling head attachment constructed in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view from the front of the accessory;

   Although a particular embodiment of the present invention has been shown in the drawings and will be described in great detail below, taken by way of example, it should be understood that no in no way intends to limit the invention to the specific form disclosed. On the contrary, the intention is to cover all equivalents, construction variations, modifications and uses within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

   Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that Figure 1 shows a face mill head attachment 20, constructed in accordance with this invention. The accessory 20 is intended to be supported by an extendable rotary spindle 21, shown in Figures 3 and 3a, and is shown as mounted on the front end of this spindle, in the standardized conical socket 22 thereof. , as shown in figure 4, for this purpose, the accessory is provided / a conical shank 23, constructed in such a way as to be retained so

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 rigid and secure in the spindle socket by means of a controlled clamping bolt 24.

   Referring in particular to Figures 1 and
2, it is seen that the boring and facing head attachment 20 of this invention comprises a body 25, generally cylindrical, having a front face 26 and a rear face 26 '. The accessory 20 being mounted in the spindle 21, the body 25 thereof rotates, driven by the rotation of the spindle in which it is rigidly fixed by its shank 23.

   To ensure a radial movement of a cutting tool relative to the spindle, the accessory is provided with a transverse slide 27, received in a diametral notch
28, in the form of a relatively deep dovetail, formed in the front face 26 of the body 25; the slide 27 is mounted to slide, under the control of devices to be described below, by means of two corresponding tenons
30 dovetail shaped. Associated wall portions of the tenons 30 engage the walls of the notch 28 against which they bear to allow sliding movement of the slider 27, which is provided with a pair of noodles 33, 35. to receive a suitable tool holder, not shown. The tool holder can be fixed in the sockets by means of set screws 37 and 39 which screw into threaded passages.

   As shown in Figures 3 and 4, the pin
21, constructed to receive the boring and face milling attachment 20, consists of an elongated cylindrical bar 44, advancing and retracting within a sleeve 45, rotatably mounted by means of bearings 46, for example, in the spindle carriage of the machine tool.

  The spindle carriage includes a drive 48 for the spindle, mounted to rotate the sleeve 45 thereof and, therefore, the bar 44. To advance or re

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 move the bar 44, the rear end of the latter is connected to a jack 49, able to move axially in the spindle carriage under the action of devices, shown here in the form of a series of assemblies 50 formed a hydraulic cylinder and a piston, to progressively advance the bar 44 to spaced positions relative to the sleeve 45 of the spindle. In this case, the assemblies 50 are connected to the jack by a control 51 comprising a double rack and a pinion.

   In accordance with the present invention, the reaming and face milling head attachment 20 is constructed to advance a cutting tool radially with respect to the spindle, for machining purposes, to any position of transl @ on of the spindle. bar 44. For this purpose, the control of the transverse slide 27 of the accessory 20 is effected by the intervention of the bar 44 and independently of any external connection with the sleeve 45 of the spindle or the spindle carrier itself. In addition, the accessory can be positioned axially, by advancing the bar 44 to any position required by the shape of the workpiece.

   To this end, the slider control is disposed inside the face mill head and includes a gear transmission (Figure 1) which engages the teeth of the racks 70 formed on the opposing interior surfaces 72 of the tenons 30 of the slider. . The transmission comprises a pair of rack pinions 75, keyed or otherwise disposed non-rotatably on a shaft 77. The pinions flank a main drive gear 79, freely rotating in a notch 81 formed between the tenons. 30. The shaft 77 has a reduced diameter end 84, received in bearings 86 fixed, in the case of that shown in Figure 1, in

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 a flanged support cap 90 mounted in a countersunk bore 92 by Allenhead screws 94.

   One or more bores 92 allow for convenient assembly of the drive transmission in the face mill head which otherwise may be cast as a single piece. We can; provide a similar cap (not shown) on the opposite side of the surfacing head, in order to facilitate the assembly of the transmission.

   According to the invention, the power necessary to move the slider 27 in the notch 28 is transmitted to the latter directly by means of the spindle. The control is ensured by a transmission of the advance in the spindle carriage; the arrangement is such that the passage of energy in the spindle is uninterrupted on the translation of the spindle bar 44.

   To this end, control rods 100 and 101 are provided, disposed longitudinally, for axial movement in the spindle bar, in bores 103 and 105 offset relative to the bar 44, in order to avoid interference with the controlled fixing bolt 24 and its actuating mechanism which passes through the center of the bar.

   Control rods 100 and 101 are aligned with bores 103 'and 105' provided in the face mill head attachment when the face mill head is mounted in the spindle. The energy for operating the spindle control rods 100 and 101 is provided by the feed transmission supported inside the spindle carriage, near the rear end of the sleeve 45, the transmission is capable ensure the translational movement of the rods 100 and 101 which can extend alternately in the bores 103 'and 105' of the surfacing head, to abut the rear ends 106 and 107, in the form of a rod , control racks 108 and 109 respectively.

   The racks 108 and 109, respectively, mesh with

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 intermediate gears 111 and 112 which, in turn, mesh with the main drive gear 79.

  Sprockets 111 and 112 are keyed or otherwise secured, in a suitable manner, to shafts 115 and 116 supported in the body 25 of the attachment. Bores drilled right through, such as bore 118, are provided for assembly, much the same way that bore 92 is provided for assembly of main drive gear 79.

   Considering the transmission of the command contained in 1 :. The face milling head as a whole, it can be seen that the axial movement of the control rod 100 or of the rod 101 in the spindle will cause, via the racks 108 and 109, the rotation of the associated pinion 111 or 112 and therefore the rotation of the main toothed wheel 79, in one or the other direction.

   While the toothed wheel 79 rotates freely in the notch 81 and does not itself engage the tool slide 27, it is keyed on the shaft 77, as do the toothed wheels 75 which engage the rack 70 on. the tenons 30 of the slide 27. Thus, the rotation of the toothed wheel 79 communicates the rotation to the toothed wheels 75, in order to drive the racks 70 and ensure the translation of the slide 27 in the notch 28 face milling head.

   It will be further observed that there is direct drive engagement throughout the transmission and forward movement of rod 100, for example, will impart clockwise movement to pinion 111 (as in FIG. 6) and a counterclockwise rotation of the toothed wheels 79 and 75, to cause a radial movement of the slide 27 outwardly. This movement has the effect of initiating the rotation of the pinion 112 in the direction of the needles of a watch and thus causing a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 rearward movement of the rack 109.

   It can now be seen that when the control rod 100 has made its full travel forwards, the rack 109 is in effect "raised" in order to return the slide 27 radially inward. In this way, a positive control of the slide is ensured and it can be controlled instantly by the two rods; likewise, the relative position of the control rods determines the position of the tool slide at all times, which is an important feature when using digital controls.

   It will now be appreciated that another object of the invention is achieved, namely the commando ensured completely by the engagement of the spindle which allows the use of automatic tool drivers. Referring to Figure 3, it can be seen that once the taper shank 23 of the surfacing head has been received in the taper bush 22 of the spindle and the fixing bolt 24 has been inserted and fixed in the threaded bore 60, no further maneuver is required to engage the surfacing head controller. It is now possible, by means of the control rods provided in the spindle, to exercise complete control over the position and the advancement speed of the slide 27 of the tool in all the positions of the spindle, whether or not it is rotating.

   Part of Figure 4 is cut away, to show that the control rods 100 and 101 butt at the ends 106 and 107 of the racks 108 and 109 in the face mill head, but are not assembled in any way. to these. In order to ensure correct alignment of the spindle control rods with the bores of the face milling head, there is provided, i on the spindle, a guide key (figure 4), received in an associated groove 127 on the accessory 20 of the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 face milling head (figure 7). These elements are so constructed that the accessory 20 cannot be received in the spindle unless it is aligned.

   Once aligned, the ends of the control rods 100 and 101 can be received in the bores 103 'and 105', respectively, still abutting the racks 108 and 109, as previously described.

   Due to the presence of the simplified driving device just described, a predetermined movement of the control rods 100 and 101 which extend longitudinally of the spindle will result in an advance movement. controlled by slide 27.

   Thus, the present invention provides a novel command and control arrangement, ensuring a radial advance of a cutting tool carried by the slide of the surfacing head which, due to the advantageous use of push rods axially controlled, may be disposed within the spindle carriage rather than some other part of the assembly between the faceplate head attachment and the spindle nose and may have advantageous use. geux of the existing feed transmission elements, already mounted, for other purposes, in the spindle carriage itself. This advance transmission is schematically illustrated in exemplary form in Figure 4 and in fuller structural detail in Figures 10 through 13.

   On the other hand, in accordance with the present invention, the advance transmission 140 is constructed and arranged so as to provide several axial advances to the control rods 100 and 101. Thus it is possible apply any of these feed rates to the tool (not shown) attached to slider 27. Referring first to Figures 4 and 5, it can be seen that the rotation of the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 spindle bar 44 is provided by means of the sleeve 45 driven by a ring gear 142. Variations in the speed of rotation of the spindle can be obtained by the intervention of a control 144, which can be of a any known type.

   Since the rods 100 and 101 are offset within the rotating spindle, it is envisioned that the translational energy of the rods be obtained by a differential mechanism, operating from rotating pinions. With particular reference to FIGS. 3, 3a and 4, this conversion of a rotary control into an axial translation of the rods 100 and 101 is carried out as follows. The straight ends of rods 100 and 101 extend into a pair of longitudinal notches 103 "and 105" formed in the spindle behind and in communication with bores 103 and 105. .

   Each of the control rods is coaxially aligned with a screw 14? abutting at its end and is screwed into a nut 149 fixed inside the longitudinal notches 103 "and 105" It is seen that the rotation of the screw 147 in the nut 149 moves the associated control rod 100, 101 in the spindle. To absorb the final thrust, a thrust bearing is interposed between each screw and the associated control rod which has a thinned portion 100 ', 101' s 'fitting into a bore 147' of the screw.

   To rotate the screw 147, this demise is attached to a splined shaft 152 which extends rearwardly from the screw, and slides into a pinion 153 which overturns it. Two pinions 153, one for each screw 147 and each of the control rods 100 (and 101, -are mounted to rotate with the spindle bar and are supported for this purpose by the right end of the sleeve 45. For mounting the pinions 153, a bearing ring 154 is

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 fixed to the end of the sleeve and provided with bores 155 intended to receive these pinions.

   In addition, the bearing ring supports, by means of the pinion 153, a toothed crown 156 provided with internal teeth 157 meshing with the pinions 153; the toothed ring 156 can rotate around the spindle and the ring 154 which supports it.

   It will be seen from Figure 4 that the rotation of the ring gear 156 around the spindle bar 44 at a different speed from that at which the spindle is driven, causes the rotation of the pinions 153. As the latter sliding on the splined shafts 152, these will rotate at the same time as the pinions, which causes the translation of the rods 100 and 101 through the action of: 'nut 149 and screw 147.

   Furthermore, although the 100 e @ 101 ties move in a trans movement; lation, the pinions 153 remain in constant engagement with the ring gear 156, since the splined shafts 152 little. may be moved axially by means of the pins 153, without physically moving the latter. The spline connections between pinions 153 and shaft 152 also allow axial movement of spindle bar 44, relative to sleeve 45, with uninterrupted control of slider 27 of the face mill head.

   It will be appreciated, however, that variations in the feed rate, as a function of the speed of the spindle, can easily be obtained by varying the rotational window of the toothed ring 156 relative to the spindle bar. The present invention provides a new arrangement for achieving this goal.

   Thus, to ensure the maximum of possibilities in the use of the surfacing head, an energy transmission device is provided allowing the speed of the crown to be varied to a large extent.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 toothed 156. To this end, a double energy input is provided, integrated by a transmission system providing the control rods with a unit variable output. Referring to Figures 4, 11 and 12, it can be seen that there is provided a ring gear 160, mounted in this case, for convenience, near the ring gear 156, but in such a way that it cannot be rotated with respect. to spindle bar 44. Ring gear 160 communicates the speed of the spindle to a pinion 162 attached to a shaft 164 which carries a pinion 166 near its other end.

   This pinion 166 is in mesh with a pinion 168, fixed to a shaft 169 carrying a pinion 170 sliding axially thereon. As will be seen below, the pinion 170 can move, to form part of a control device for an auxiliary machine tool element. For the purpose of this part of the description, however, pinion 170 is engaged with pinion 172, as shown in the dotted lines, to form part of a planetary gear 173 including here a planet carrier. 174.

   The second energy input from the dual input to transmission 173 is provided by a variable drive, 180, of a well-known construction, which can be manually or digitally controlled as part of the main machine transmission connected to other elements of it. If desired, transmission 17; can be designed to receive an input, depending on the movement of another part of the machine. The variable drive is connected to the transmission by means of an input shaft 182 and a bevel input gear 183 to a bevel gear 184 driving a cross shaft 186 to which is attached in view. of its drive, a pinion 188.

   The latter engages an input planet gear 190, attached directly to a shaft 192 which carries the sun gear 194 of the transmission.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

 mission. By now providing, to the differential planetary transmission, a first input which is proportional to the rotation of the spindle, and a second input which can be varied at will, due to the application of the spindle. well known principle of the differential planetary gear one can derive a precisely controlled output, transmitted to the ring gear 156. The planetary gear 194 engages one of the planet gears 196, while another planet gear 198 engages an output toothed wheel 200, mounted on a shaft 202 carrying a toothed wheel 204, which, as will be seen, engages the toothed ring 156 around the spindle 44.

   The speed of rotation of planet gear 196 is a function of the command communicated to it by the rotation of the planet carrier driven by wheel 170, as a function of the speed of rotation of the spindle and of that which is applied to it. communicated by the intermediary of the planetary toothed wheel 194 driving one of its planet wheels. The output of the transmission by the planetary gear 198 is therefore a combined function of the rotation of the spindle and the precisely controlled variable drive 180.

   It will be appreciated that when the control of the toothed ring 156 drives the latter at the same speed as the spindle, the rods 100 and 101 do not turn and consequently, there is no translation of the transverse slide. 27. However, the present arrangement is such that, by means of a suitable control of the variable control 180, it is possible to transmit to the ring gear 156 a higher speed of rotation than that of the spindle bar 44 and it follows that the Toothed wheels 153 are driven in rotation and cause a translation of the rods 100 and 101, in order to drive the slide 27 in one direction or the other.

   The fact that a larger

 <Desc / Clms Page number 15>

 relative rotation of ring gear 156 causing slide 27 to move left or right is only a matter of construction.

   As noted above, the construction of a face milling head attachment for a digitally controlled machine tool poses the problem of determining, at any time, the precise position of the tool during operation of the tool. the surfacing head, in relation to the workpiece. It is a feature of the present invention that the precise position of the tool can be determined at any time and this is a new feature of the training device which has been described above.

   It has been stated that the control rods 100 and 101 are connected to the slider 27 of the tool in such a way that a forward movement of one of them in its bore determines a proportional movement towards the back. - laugh at the other. It is clear, however, that by determining the relative position of the racks 108 and 109, it is also possible to determine the precise position of the slide of the tool. It is then easy to determine the position of the tool used, adjusted by means of a suitable tool holder (not shown) in fixed bushes 33, 35. As the control rods 100 and 101 are in constant abutment with the racks 108 and 109, these rods also move in identical quantities with respect to each other.

   Consequently, the determination of the relative position of the rods 100 and 101 will give the position of the tool on the slide 27. The relative position of the rods 100 and 101 is at all times in relation through the intermediary of the transmission 173. , with the angular position of the control input shaft 182. In other words, the position of the control rods is a function of the rotation of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 16>

 the spindle and the rotation of the shaft 182. Referring to Figure 4, we see that this information is received by an information box 210, connected to the shaft 182, in order to detect at any time the position angular of it.

  The information box may be of any suitable electrical or mechanical construction, comprising, for convenience, one or more servo motors for determining the position of the element for which this box has been intended. and which, in this case, the tool on the accessory of the face milling head. This information can be used to allow the execution of tool movements automatically, between specified coordinates, when using a numerical control.

   The invention also provides that the drive 173, which can be used as described to cause the couliaseau carrying the tool of a face mill attachment to move again, can also be used to provide an entry of the face. energy to other parts of the machine tool which do not specifically relate to the present invention. Thus, in some cases, it is desirable to be able to cause a translational movement of the spindle carriage, table or machine tool carriage, as the case may be, at a speed which is responsive. - tion of that of the spindle, and not a drive over a certain distance per unit of time. The invention contemplates a way of accomplishing this without adding other elements; machine that would increase the price and size of the tool.

   Thus, the toothed wheel 173, which can move as indicated above, constantly rotates at a speed proportional to that of the spindle. By moving the toothed wheel 170 to the right, as shown in Figure 5, it engages the input wheels 190, 188, 184 and 183 as well as with the shaft 182. We therefore communicate
1

 <Desc / Clms Page number 17>

 quer, by means of the variable control 180, a control which is a function of the speed of the spindle, and the toothed ring 172 will be free of no-load tournor so that the control via the transmission sion 173 is effectively disengaged.

   The actual displacement of the toothed wheel 170 can be carried out automatically, or manually, and in the present case, it can be carried out by means of a piston 220 (FIG. 12) sliding in a cylinder 222, formed in the housing 224, around the transmission 140. A plug 226, screwed into the end of the cylinder 222, is provided with a passage 228 through which it can be supplied with pressurized fluid. To move the toothed wheel 170 from the piston 120, which has a groove at 230 and which is provided with an O-ring seal 232, a piston rod 234 is used, also having a groove 236 and provided with a seal ring 238 preventing leakage of oil through the reduced diameter portion 240 which supports the piston rod 234 in its alternate movement.

   The outer end of the rod 234 is of reduced diameter and threaded as in 242; a displacement bar 244, pierced with a hole 246 at one of its ends, is attached by a nut 248 to the portion 242 of reduced diameter. The opposite end of the bar 244, 250 is bifurcated and engages a shaft 252 between two support washers 254 and 256, the whole being held in place; by a nut 258. The rod 252 can move in a reciprocating motion in a bore 257, disposed concentrically in the shaft 169 which carries toothed wheels 168 and a sliding toothed wheel 170.

   The outer part of the shaft 169 is provided with splines, as in 259, near the toothed wheel 170, so as to constantly engage the latter to drive it in rotation, while allowing it a movement of. effective translation on

 <Desc / Clms Page number 18>

 the tree. Shaft 169 is also notched at 261 (Fig. 11) and toothed wheel 170 is secured by means of a cross pin 263 to shaft 252 reciprocating.

  Thus, applying an appropriate hydraulic pressure to the face of piston 220, through opening 228 in cylinder 222, lifts the piston as shown in Fig. 12 and accordingly moves to the right. the bar 244 and the shaft 252, to bring the toothed wheel 170 into engagement with the planet carrier 172. In the present case, a compression return spring 267 is provided in the cylinder 222 and in the position Usually, the sliding gear 170 therefore engages the attachable gear 172. ched on the planet carrier, to ensure an advance control of the grout @ @u 27.

   In order to know at all times the position of the toothed wheel 170 and therefore the position of the transmission of the control, detection switches 270 and 272 are provided. A cam 274 is mounted, in any suitable manner, on the piston rod 234, as indicated here, by a "C" clamp. Cam 274 engages a roller provided on microswitch 272, which closes and opens the latter when rod 234 reciprocates. Likewise, on the switch 270, a roller 280 operated by an arm 274 ′ mounted to move with the shaft 252 is provided.

   By providing the combination of switches 270 and 272, the position of toothed wheel 170 can be transmitted to an automatic control system or, alternatively, used to cause the operation of an illuminated signal indicating to the operator. operator the situation of its transmission, or to perform these two functions.
