<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"Improvements to helmets"
The present invention relates to a protective helmet with a reinforced edge.
Protective helmets must be able to withstand impact, without breaking or deformation, but must also withstand strong compression and shear.
The usual helmets have various disadvantages.
Indeed, if they offer good impact resistance, their resistance to longitudinal or transverse compression is insufficient. To remedy, to some extent, the lack of compressive strength, it has been thought to increase the thickness of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
helmet shell. The latter being usually made of plastic material, the increase in thickness, in order to obtain sufficient resistance to compression, must be substantial, which has the disadvantage, on the one hand, of considerably heavier helmets and hence, to make them uncomfortable and, on the other hand, to significantly increase the cost price of such helmets.
The object of the invention is to remedy these drawbacks and to provide a helmet with a reinforced edge offering excellent resistance to impacts and to compression, while allowing the use of impact-resistant materials having a small thickness.
To this end, according to the invention, the reinforced edge is formed by the wall of the helmet and by an element of low height arranged at a certain distance from said wall and extending over at least part of the periphery of the helmet, the wall of the helmet and the aforesaid element being joined by at least one spacer.
According to one embodiment of the invention, the lower edge of the aforesaid element and the lower edge of the wall of the helmet are located substantially at the same level.
According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the spacer is arranged so as to join the aforesaid wall to the middle part of the aforementioned element, i
According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the aforesaid spacer is continuous so as to join the aforesaid element, over the entire length of the latter, to the wall of the helmet.
Other details and features of the invention emerge from the description. drawings appended to this specification and which represent, by way of nonlimiting example, a particular embodiment of the subject of the invention.

reinforced edge according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view taken along arrows 11-11 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is, on a larger scale, a section along the line III-III of Figure 2.
In the various figures, the same reference notations designate similar elements.
The helmet 1 with visor 2 and reinforced edge 3, shown in the drawings, is made of plastic and is molded in one piece. The reinforced edge 3 of the helmet 1 is formed by the wall 4 of the helmet and by an element 5, of low height and arranged at a certain distance from the wall 4, extending over the entire circumference of the helmet, from one end 6 of visor 2 at the other end 7 of said visor. The lower edge 8 of the element 5 and the lower edge 9 of the wall 4 of the helmet are located substantially at the same level, this element 5 and the wall 4 being joined by a spacer 10.
This spacer is in the form of an arch, it is continuous, so as to join the wall 4 to the element 5 over the entire length of the latter, and it is arranged so as to join the wall 4 to the middle part of 1! element 5. The reinforced edge 3 of the helmet 1 also includes reinforcing crossbars 11 bringing together, from place.in place, the wall 4 of the helmet, the element 5 and the spacer 10. The crossbars 11 are arranged near the lower edges 8 and 9 of the wall 4 and the element 5 so that the water falling on the helmet and collected in the edge 3 of the latter can flow normally through the helmet visor 2.
The reinforced edge 3 of the helmet offering great resistance to longitudinal or transverse compression, however, thanks to the small thickness of the wall 4, of the element 5 and of the spacer 10, sufficient elasticity to avoid permanent deformation of the helmet. helmet when the latter has been compressed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The wall 4 of the helmet, the element 5 and the spacer 10 have substantially the same thickness, this thickness being small, the helmet according to the invention has a reduced bulk, is very light to wear and allows it to be produced. with a minimum of raw material, which has the effect of significantly reducing the cost price of said helmet. Despite the helmet's small thickness, tests have shown that for equal impact resistance, its compressive strength is almost three times the strength of helmets generally used.
The helmet according to the invention also has the great advantage of being able to be molded, in a single piece, in a simple mold having no undercut.
It should be understood that the invention is in no way limited to the embodiment described and that many modifications can be made to the latter without departing from the scope of the present patent.
