 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 Pompage.

De réaliser une pompe à piston dont le piston   coopère ;   avec la paroi de la chambre d'une   manière   perfectionnée en vue de définir la chambre de   pompa('!   de la pompe et de jouer le rôle d'un clapet d'admission du fluide dans la chambre de pompage ;

De réaliser dans une telle pompe un   dispositif   de contrôle du fluide situé en amont du point de coopération entre le piéton de la pompe et la paroi de la chambre et   fonctionnant,,   à la façon d'une soupape de   décompression;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

  "Improved pedestrian pump * The present invention relates to a pump, a pedestrian and more particularly a piston hand pump.

   A pioton pump comprises a piston which slides in a bore and defines therein a chamber of variable volume for pumping the fluid. The back and forth movement! of the piston varies the volume of the pumping chamber and comprises a suction stroke during which the pumping chamber fills with fluid, and a discharge stroke during which the fluid is expelled from this chamber. Devices such as check valves or the like are used to control the passage of fluid to and from the chamber.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 Pumping.

   In general, the piston. the pump is always pressed against the wall of the bore both during the suction stroke and during the discharge stroke.

   The main goals of the invention are:
To produce a piston pump whose piston cooperates; with the wall of the chamber in an improved manner in order to define the pump chamber ('! of the pump and to act as a valve for admitting the fluid into the pumping chamber;

To produce in such a pump a device for controlling the fluid located upstream of the point of cooperation between the pedestrian of the pump and the wall of the chamber and operating, like a decompression valve;
To produce a pump whose piston cooperates in a sealed manner, with the wall of the chamber, only during the discharge stroke in order to delimit the pumping chamber downstream from it and which otherwise allows the fluid to pass from a chamber of filling located upstream of the piston in the discharge chamber and in which a valve for retaining the fluid in the filling chamber functions as a pressure relief valve during the suction stroke of the pump piston.

   The description which will follow with regard to the appended drawing, given by way of non-limiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be carried out, the particularities which emerge both from the drawing and from the text forming, of course, part of said invention. invention.

   Figure 1 is a plan view of a hand piston pump according to the preferred embodiment of the invention *
Figure 2 is a vertical section through line 2-2 of Figure 1.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   Figures 3 and 4 are cross-sections, on a larger scale of the lower part of the pump shown in figure 2, the different members occupying different positions corresponding respectively to the delivery stroke and to the filling stroke *
Figures 5, 6 and 7 are perspective views (with parts broken away in Figures 5 and 6) of various parts used in the construction of the pump according to the invention.

   In Figures 1 and 2 there is shown, by way of example, a body 10 in which is mounted a hand pump according to the present invention. Body 10 includes a cover or support block 12 with spaced apart fixing tabs 13 which can be attached to any suitable structure (not shown) to support the pump body. Holes 14 are provided in the tabs 13 to receive, for this purpose, fixing bolts (not shown). A pot 16 is attached to the support block 12 inside an annular cavity 18 formed in the lower part * of the block 12. The connection between the pot 16 and the block 12 is substantially liquid-tight thanks to a slight bearing. conical 20 of the inner wall of the cavity 18 against which the upper end of the pot 16 bears.

   An elastic ring 22, housed in a groove 23 formed in the outer wall of the cavity 18, bears against a rib 24 formed on the upper end of the pot
16 to keep the pot pressed against the conical seat 20.

  The cover block 12 and the pot 16 thus form, together, a closed reservoir 26 containing the fluid to be pumped. A fluid filling conduit 27 is provided in the block 12 and comprises, a tube 18 press-fitted in a receiving hole 29 and carrying, at its upper end, a valve 30 held by

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 a spring in its closed position and articulated on the tube 28 by a pin 31.

   A pumping cylinder 34 is terminated at the support block 12 by a threaded joint 35 formed in the annular wall 36 of the support block. A tapered metal-to-metal seat 37 provides a sealed connection between the support block 12 and the cylinder 34. The cylinder 34 is hollow along its entire length and has spaced concentric bores 39 and 40 separated by a tapered shoulder 42 which sits apart. 'flares towards the lower open inlet end of the cylinder.

     Cross holes 43 (only one of which is shown) are drilled in block 12 and communicate with the open top end of cylinder 34, these holes are threaded to allow easy connection with an external fluid line or silimaire element. (not shown). A cylindrical wire mesh filter 44 is fixed by a collar 45 to the wall 36 of the upper block 12 at a short distance from the cylinder 34. This filter, the bottom 44a of which is closed, completely surrounds the cylinder 34, so as to retain the materials. foreign matter which may be contained in the fluid passing from reservoir 26 into the lower open inlet end of cylinder 34.

   A rod 46 passes through an opening 47 of the upper block 12 and extends along the bore 40 in the cylinder 34. A round seal 48 held by a washer 49 in an annular groove of the upper block 12 forms with the rod 46 a seal preventing the fluid from leaving the outside of the pump. A handle 50 attached to the end of the rod 46 provides a convenient element allowing the operator to move the rod within the cylinder 34.

   A piston assembly 54 is attached to the lower end of rod 46 and moves back and forth in bore 40. A compression spring 55 is mounted between assembly 54 and washer 49.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 to push down the rod 46 and the track assembly as can be seen in Figures 2 to 4.

   The assembly 54 constituting the pedestrian has transverse shoulders axially spaces 56 and 57 connected by axial guide surfaces 58, 59 and 60 delimiting an annular cavity 62 open towards the periphery of the bore 40. The axial guide surfaces 58 and 60 are substantially parallel to the periphery of the bore 40 and are joined by the conical guide surface 59 which converges in the direction of the upper shoulder 57. The transverse shoulder 57 is pierced with openings 63 which provide communication for the fluid between the volumes located, in the bore 40, above and below the piston.

   A round seal 64 is mounted in the cavity, or groove 62, defined by the various surfaces 56-60 and can move relative to these surfaces during the various movements of the piston assembly 54 and the rod 46 in the bore 40.

  The axial guide surface 58 is located at such a distance from the periphery of the bore 40 that it comes into contact with the round seal 64 when the latter is opposite said surface, as can be seen in FIG. 3, in order to establish a tight seal between the piston assembly and the periphery of the bore 40. However, when the seal 64 is opposite the axial guide surface 57, as shown in Figures 2 and 4 , the fluid can pass beyond the round seal
64 through the openings 63.

   The volume 68 located above the piston 54 between the rod 46 and the periphery of the bore 40 constitutes the delivery chamber of the pump described. Thus, during the upward stroke of the rod 46 and of the piston 54 in the bore 40 (FIG. 3), the fluid trapped in the delivery chamber
68 is driven out through the bore (s) 43 and is discharged by the pump. On the contrary, a downward stroke of the rod

 46 and piston 54 (figure 4) forces the fluid located in the filling camber 70 located below the pedestrian 54 to move the round seal 64 away from its seat and to pass into the delivery chamber 68 above the piston 54 .

   As has been described heretofore, the pump comprising the piston 54 with its rim seal 64 capable of being applied to its seat produces a discharge pressure during the upstroke of the. rod 46 which is limited only by the take-off pressure of the seal 64 and which, during the downward course of the rod, falls virtually sero, the fluid passing beyond the round seal remote from its seat.

   A retainer assembly 72 this mounted in bore 39 of cylinder 34 and is arranged so as to form a fluid check valve in the filling chamber 70, and an overload water safety valve in the discharge chamber. filling, as required during the reciprocating stroke of rod 46 and piston 54 in the bore
40. The retainer 72 comprises a body 73 sliding freely in the bore 39 and carrying a round seal 74 which can be applied against the tapered shoulder 42 separating the bores.
39 and 40.

   A spring 75 held by a retaining washer
76 housed in an annular groove 77 of the cylinder 34 pushes the seal 74 against the conical shoulder 42. The body 73 also contains an inlet valve 80 consisting of a ball 81 movable in a cavity 82 of limited size and intended to s' apply against a child restraint 83.

   The operation of the pump is as follows: the reservoir 26 is filled with fluid to be pumped through the filling duct 27 of the upper block 12. This fluid thus pushes against the lower side of the check valve 80.

   During the upward course * of the rod 46 and the piston 54 (Figures 3), the seal 64 of the piston hermetically closes'

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 the space between the periphery of the bore 40 and the piston, which lowers the pressure of the fluid in the filling chamber 70 and passes fluid from the reservoir 26 to; through the valve 80 which is lifted from its seat in the filling chamber. The spring 75 holds the seal 74 against the conical shoulder 42 which forms the lower limit of the filling chamber 70.

   On the downward stroke of the rod 46 and the piston 54 (Figure 4), the fluid contained in the fill chamber 70 above the retainer 72 pushes the seal 64 of the piston 54 and passes past the piston in the discharge chamber 68. However, as the discharge chamber 68 has a much smaller cross section than the filling chamber 70, only part of the fluid contained in the filling chamber can pass into the discharge chamber. The excess fluid is forced from the fill chamber 70 through the retainer 72 and returns to the reservoir 26. This is achieved by creating a pressure of the fluid in the fill chamber 70 which boosts the retaining capacity of the spring. 75, that is to say by removing the round seal 74 from the conical shoulder 42.

   The next upstroke of rod 46 and piston 54 forces round seal 64 to be sealed between the piston and the chamber wall to force the fluid trapped in the discharge chamber 68 through the discharge holes 43 and back into the chamber. same time to fill the filling aeration 70, as previously described.

   The retaining assembly 72 keeps the filling chamber 70 always full regardless of the level of the fluid in the reservoir 26. In the absence of this assembly, if the level of the fluid in the reservoir was too low when the seal 64 of the piston 54 moves away from its seat, the column of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 fluid contained in the discharge chamber and the filling chamber could escape to the reservoir. retainer 72 also sets the minimum fluid pressure on the discharge side of the pump, which is determined by the opening pressure of retainer 72.

   It is understood that with this system, it is possible to obtain almost instantaneously a high discharge pressure of the fluid since the discharge side of the system is normally filled with the fluid to be pumped. In addition, since the pump shown is a 4-hand pump during the pumping stroke, the rate at which the pressure increases and the system flow rate depends only on the force exerted by the operator.

  The whole of the piston and the rod, during the filling or return stroke, only plunges into the column of fluid contained in the filling chamber 70 under the action of the spring 55 and against it. resistance to the pressure of the retainer 72.

   Some construction details will now be described. It will be noted that the lower end of the rod 46 to the right of the piston 54 has a cylindrical shank 90 (FIG. 3) projecting from an annular shoulder 91. The piston 54 itself is formed by a guide element. 93 (figure 6) and a retaining element 95 (figure 7) The guide element 93 is annular and comprises a flat ring 97 and a stepped cylinder-conical rod 98 extending from this ring and pierced with a bore 99.

   The end of bore 99 adjacent to ring 97 is countersunk at 101 and flares outward. The retainer 95 is a planar disc which has a transverse slot 102. This slot 102 intersects a round hole 103 in which the shank 90 fits tightly and is extended by elongated portions 104 longer than.
The shoulder 91 to delimit the openings 63 for the passage of. fluid as discussed above.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

   The guide member 93 and the disc 95 are mounted against each other on the shank 90 of the rod 46. The shank 90 is drilled as seen at 107 (FIG. 3) to allow the leveling of the shank. the end part against the countersunk part 101 of the guide element 93. The guide element and the disc are thus fixed against the shoulder 91 of the rod and the etanoheity between the guide element and this is ensured. rod.

  The lower surface 56 of the cavity 62 is formed by the ring 97 of the guide member 93, while the upper surface 57 is formed by the disc 95. The rod 98 of the guide member 93 forms the axial guide surfaces 58, 59 and 60 already mentioned *
The body 73 of the retainer 72 forms a valve head 110 (Figure 5). This valve head 110 is annular and has a bore 112 terminating at a flange 113 surrounding a central opening 115 defining the aforementioned seat 83.

   The base 116 of the valve head 110 is almost as wide as the bore 39, but flats 118 are formed on its periphery to allow fluid to pass when mounted in the bore. In use, the ball 81 is located in the bore 112 of the valve head 110 and rests against the seat 83 of the flange 113. An internally serrated washer 119 (Figure 3) is placed against the shoulder 120 at the bottom. opposite end of the bore 112, and the rim 122 is forced at several points on this washer to keep it in place The irregular central opening 124 of the washer 119 holds the ball 81 in place in the cavity 82, and ensures at the same time to the fluid a passage beyond the ball iorà of the suction coursa of the pump.

   The round seal 74 is fixed to the body 73 between the enlarged flange 122 and the base 116. The underside of the valve head 110 is milled at 126 up to the flange 113 and serves as a bearing cup for the spring. recall 75.
