Transmission hydrostatique.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
i t
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
Quand l'arbre
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

Hydrostatic transmission.
The present invention relates generally to hydrostatic transmissions and more particularly to a variable speed hydrostatic transmission, which comprises several power transmission paths between an input shaft and an output shaft; this transmission can be used to propel any different vehicle, from heavy tracked work vehicles to cars that can travel at high speed on highways.
In the past, a hydrostatic transmission, intended for vehicles, has in principle included a continuously variable speed system, in which variations in the speed
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
speed were produced by a relative adjustment of the displacements of a pump and a motor, all the power being transmitted hydraulically.
However, transmissions of this type may not be suitable in certain applications requiring small, light and efficient transmissions. To achieve more compact and efficient transmissions, these basic systems can be modified to suit them. incorporating provisions for changing gear ratios; can also modify these systems by incorporating several hydraulic devices, with devices for selectively disengaging one or. several of these hydraulic devices.
These systems thus modified have certain advantages, such as the reduction in the dimensions of the hydraulic devices and the increase in efficiency; however, they often have drawbacks such as undersized clutches and increased complexity.
Attempts have been made to modify these basic systems in another way to achieve more compact and larger transmissions; efficient; It has been proposed for this, as constituting an interesting improvement, a differential transmission realizing a divided transmission path, transmitting the torque by mechanical means and by hydraulic means simultaneously from the input shaft to the output shaft by means of a mechanical differential.
In reality, if differential transmissions of this type find a place in applications where the transfer of hydraulic power is relatively small compared to the total power transmitted, they do not ordinarily allow the dimensions of the hydraulic devices required to be reduced. , if they are to provide zero output speed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The present invention solves a large number of the above-mentioned problems by providing a hydrostatic transmission which comprises, according to a new arrangement, both a mechanical differential, and operating mode change clutches. This improved transmission minimizes the role of the hydraulic device and the dimensions of the clutches, so that it constitutes a transmission much less bulky, lighter and more efficient.
To this end, the present transmission uses a purely hydrostatic drive, for low output speeds, and a combined differential drive, both hydrostatic and mechanical, for the higher output speeds; the change between these two ranges of speeds occurs at a time when no change in nominal speed takes place in the transmission and the clutch elements therefore rotate in synchronism.
The hydrostatic transmission, according to the present invention, comprises several selective power transmission paths; it comprises a first shaft, a second shaft, a differential comprising a first pinion, a second pinion and a control pinion to vary the speed of rotation of the first pinion relative to the second pinion, the latter being in relation drive with the second shaft, a first hydraulic device in drive relation with one of the shafts, a second hydraulic device, conduits connecting between them the first and the second hydraulic device, a device for making vary the volumetric displacement of at least one of the hydraulic devices, a control device for transferring the power, in a lower range of speeds,

comprising a device, for selectively connecting ', 1 <' hydraulic osH11's, so as to transmit all the p: '. between the first shaft and the second shaft, and a device for transmitting power, in a higher range of speeds, between the first shaft and the second shaft; the latter device comprising a selectively controlled device for synchronously driving the first pinion to the first shaft and the second hydraulic device to the drive pinion, whereby a differential power transmission is obtained, in the upper range of speeds, between the first shaft and the second shaft.
The hydrostatic transmission according to the invention and comprising several power transfer paths comprises a first shaft, a second shaft, a differential comprising an input member, an output member and a control for varying the speed of. output member with respect to the input member, a first hydraulic device in a driving relationship with one of the shafts, a second hydraulic device in a driving relationship with said control, a device for varying the volumetric displacement of one of the hydraulic devices, of the conduits interconnecting the first and the second hydraulic device, a device placing in a drive relation one of the input and output members with one of the trees,
a first device for selectively connecting the other member with the other shaft, a second device for selectively sheet metal said control and the input member, and a control device for activating the first device, selective connection, and to suppress the action of the second selective binding device.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent on reading the following detailed description with reference to the appended drawing, in which: FIG. 1 diagrammatically represents une.transmission in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 schematically shows a simplified control device, which can be used in the present transmission to change the mode of operation; Fig. 3 is a graph showing how the speed of the fixed hydraulic device varies when the speed of the output shaft itself varies from 0 to a maximum for a given input speed.
The present invention can be practically realized in a large number of different forms; however, a particular embodiment of the invention has been shown in the drawing and will be described in detail, it being understood that this embodiment is only an example, illustrating the principles of the invention. tion, and does not in any way limit the scope thereof.
We see in Figure 1 a differential and hydraulic transmission 10, according to the invention. It is of course understood, however, that this FIG. 1 is diagrammatic for greater clarity, and that the actual transmission would in practice be much more compact. This transmission is particularly suitable for vehicles requiring a space-saving, lightweight and efficient transmission.
An input shaft 11 is connected to the engine of the vehicle, while an output shaft 12 is connected by suitable gears to a drive device, for example to the wheels of the vehicle.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Transmission 10 in principle comprises a hydraulic transmission 13, a differential 14, and clutches 16 and 17, the clutches making selective power transmission paths between the input shaft 11 and the output shaft 12.
The hydraulic transmission 13 comprises a hydraulic device 20 with variable volumetric displacement and a hydraulic device 21 with fixed volumetric displacement. Each of these two hydraulic devices can be in the form of a device with multiple axial pistons, in which the pistons, are driven by a reciprocating movement by a cam or a thrust member. In the hydraulic device 20 with variable volumetric displacement, an adjustable pivoting plate 23 makes it possible to vary the volumetric displacement of the device by means of an appropriate control handle 24, shown in FIG. 1 in its neutral position.
The swash plate 23 or the cam playing the same role and the control handle 24 can be moved from the neutral position to a first position 25 of maximum stroke, lying on one side of the position. neutral, and up to a second position 26 of maximum travel, located on the other side of the neutral position. Thus, by moving the control handle 24 to either side of the neutral position, a reversible flow is achieved with respect to the hydraulic device 20; flow conduits 29 and 30, interconnecting the hydraulic devices in a closed circuit of a well-known type, can therefore be reversed to form alternately a high pressure conduit and a low pressure conduit.
In this way, the direction and speed of rotation of the hydraulic device 21 with invariable volumetric displacement can be controlled.
The hydraulic device 20 with variable volumetric displacement is in a rotational drive relationship with the shaft.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
input, via a shaft 33 and two toothed wheels 34, 35. The hydraulic device 21 is mounted so as to rotate at the same time as a control toothed wheel 37, via a shaft 39 and a pinion 40. As will be seen more clearly a little later, each of the hydraulic devices 20, 21 can function alternately as a pump or as a motor during different parts of the speed range of the transmission 10.
In the low speed range. of the transmission, all the power transmitted from the input shaft 11 to the output shaft 12 is transmitted to the latter by the rams 35 and 34, the hydraulic transmission 13, the pinion 40 and the control toothed wheel 37.
The differential 14 is provided for performing a division. of the power transmission path in the upper transmission speed range. This differential comprises a toothed crown 41, forming an integral part of the toothed wheel 37, planet gears 42 and a planetary toothed wheel 43, which is in a driving relationship with the output shaft 12. The planet wheels 42 are mounted. rotating on a support 45 keyed on a coaxial shaft of power 47.
The volumetric displacements of the hydraulic devices 20 and 21 are adapted and the gears 34, 35 and 40 37 are chosen in such a way that the transmission
I hydraulic mission 13 turns the power selective shaft
47 in the same direction and at the same speed as the input shaft 11, when the swash plate 23 is in its first position
25 of maximum volumetric displacement and when the clutch 17 is engaged.
On the contrary, when the clutch 17 is disengaged and when the clutch 16 is engaged, during the forward travel of the transmission, the ring gear 41 turns, that is to say in the same direction as the shafts 11 and 12, to subtract a certain speed
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
of that of the differential, or in the opposite direction to add a certain speed to that of the differential in a well known manner. Thus, the ring gear 41 controls the speed ratio between the shafts 12 and 47, in the upper range of transmission speeds, as will be explained a little later.
i t
The clutches 16 and 17 serve to change the transmission from the lower range of speeds, realized by the direct hydraulic transmission, to a higher range of speeds provided by a differential for dividing the power transmission path. The clutch 16 comprises a first member 50, keyed to the input shaft 11 and a second member 51, which is keyed to the power shaft 47 and which can be selectively engaged by the first member 50. .
The clutch 17, when engaged, serves to lock the differential 14, so that the pinion 40 can drive - directly the output shaft
12 in the lower speed range. The clutch 17 includes a first member 53, which is keyed to the power shaft 47 and which can be selectively engaged with a second member 54 formed on the control gear 37.
Thus, when the clutch 17 is engaged, the differential 14 is locked, since a relative rotation is not possible between the toothed ring gear 41 and the support 45 of the satellites, this support being keyed on the 'shaft 47. when clutch 17 is disengaged, the differential is unlocked and the speed of output shaft 12 can vary relative to power shaft 47.
A control system, shown in part in Figure 2, is provided to change the transmission from a low speed mode of operation to a high speed mode of operation. The circuit of FIG. 2 comprises a switch 55 arranged such that its plunger 56 is actuated.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
by the control handle 24, when the latter reaches the first position 25 of maximum volumetric displacement. Switch 55 can be a single pole, two way switch.
With a control of the type shown, the switch performs a short stroke and has a relatively stiff spring, so that the operator can feel the change in speed.
Solenoid 58 'and 59 are provided to actuate and engage clutches 16 and 17 respectively. When switch 55 is in its position corresponding to the lower gear range, it keeps solenoid 59 energized and solenoid not energized. 58, so that the clutch 16 is disengaged and the clutch 17 is engaged. When plunger 56 is initially depressed by control handle 24, solenoid 58 energizes and solenoid 59 loses energization, such that clutch 16 engages and clutch 17 disengages.
The switch 55 is designed in such a way that when its plunger is depressed for the second time by the control handle, the solenoid 59 energizes again, while the solenoid 58 loses its excitation; this results in the engagement of the clutch 17 and the disengagement of the clutch 16.
It is understood that the switch 55 is only shown schematically in the drawing and that it can be of the common type sold in the trade, which passes to a first position and retains this position, when you push in and release. button 56, and which passes to a second position, which it retains when pushing in and releasing button 56 again.
The configuration of the structure of the present transmission has been described above, but the advantages and characteristics of this transmission will be better appreciated on reading the explanation of the operation which follows. When the tree
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
input 11 is driven at its nominal speed by the engine, and when the control lever 24 is in its neutral position, the vehicle remains at rest.
Solenoid 58 is then not energized, while solenoid 59 is energized, so that clutch 16 is disengaged and thereby establishes the connection between input shaft 11 and drive shaft. power 47; the clutch 17 is then engaged and locks the differential 14, so that the pinion 40, if driven itself, can drive directly: hold the output shaft 12 through the toothed wheel
37.
When the operator begins to move the control lever 24 to the first position 25 of maximum volume displacement, the hydraulic device 20 functions as a pump and drives the hydraulic device 21 supplying it with fluid; the device 21 then operates as a motor and rotates in the same direction as the device 20. The hydraulic motor 21 then drives the output shaft 12 via the shaft 39, the pinion 40, the wheel toothed 37, of the clutch.
17 and planet carrier 45, which is locked relative to output shaft 12 in this mode of operation. The transmission remains in this low speed, direct hydrostatic operating state until control lever 24 reaches a position just before position 25 of maximum volumetric travel. In this direct hydrostatic operating mode, the output speed of shaft 12 is proportional to the volumetric displacement of the hydraulic device.
20 and at the speed of the hydraulic device 21 with fixed volumetric displacement, as seen in Figure 3.
If the operator desires a continuous increase in speed, he pushes the control lever 24 so as to lower
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
the plunger 56 of the switch 55, thereby energizing the solenoid 58 and removing the energization of the solenoid 59. As a result, the clutch 16 engages, so as to connect the input shaft 11 to the power shaft 47, while the clutch: 17 disengages and releases the differential 14.
As indicated above, the power shaft 47 rotates at this time, at the same speed and in the same direction as the input shaft 11; thus, the engagement of the clutch 16 takes place automatically at synchronous speeds of its two elements, thus achieving one; gradual change from direct hydrostatic operating mode to differential operating mode. The operator then reduces the volumetric displacement of the hydraulic device 20, which begins to function as a motor or as a metering device for the hydraulic device :: 21 with fixed volumetric displacement, which then functions as a pump and which is driven by the pinions 37 and 40.
The clutch 16 being engaged and the clutch 17 being disengaged, the planet carrier 45 and the ring gear 41 rotate in the same direction, so that the ring gear effectively performs a speed subtraction. When the volumetric displacement of the device 20 is further reduced, by approaching the neutral position, this device effects a greater restriction of the flow and the speed of the device 21 and of the ring gear 41 decreases, by subtracting thus of the differential a speed more and more reduced and consequently allowing a further increase in the output speed of the shaft 12.
As seen in Fig. 3, during this mode of operation, the speed of device 21 and the stroke of device 20 tend towards zero.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
When the control lever 24 and the swash plate 23 reach the neutral position, the hydraulic device 21 with fixed volumetric displacement stops rotating, since the volumetric displacement of the hydraulic device 20 is zero, so that the ring gear 41 stops. to turn. Continuous movement of control lever 24 to the reverse position 26 of maximum volumetric displacement again causes device 20 to operate as a pump, thereby driving device 21 in the reverse direction (Figure 3).
As a result, the ring gear 41 of the differential reverses its direction of rotation and begins to rotate in the opposite direction to the direction of rotation of the planet carrier 45; the ring gear 41 thus adds a certain speed to the differential and consequently increases the speed of the output shaft 12. The speed of the transmission can be increased in this mode of operation, until the moment when the speed is obtained. maximum speed, when the volumetric displacement of the device 20 corresponds to the position 26 of the maximum negative displacement.
It should be noted that by increasing the speed of the output shaft 12 in the present transmission, the hydraulic device 21 is effectively used three times, since this device passes through its speed range three times while the associated shaft output crosses its speed range only once,
The transmission speed can then be reduced by reducing the volumetric displacement of the device 20 from the negative position 26 of maximum displacement to the position. neutral and again increasing its volumetric displacement to position 25, on the other side of the neutral position.
In this way, the operating mode described above is simply reversed from the upper range of speeds, then a

further reduction of speed by lowering the switch 56 by means of the control lever 24, so as to disengage the clutch 16 and to engage the clutch 17. This chan. The sodium hydroxide operation is still carried out gradually, since the elements of the clutch 16 automatically rotate in synchronicity and the transmission is thus again in its direct hydrostatic operating mode. A further reduction in speed is obtained by returning the control lever 24 to its neutral position.
Reverse drive of the transmission is accomplished by shifting control lever 24 to the reverse position of maximum volumetric displacement, in the hydrostatic direct operation mode. It is thus possible to obtain in reverse a speed equal to approximately 20% of the maximum speed of the transmission, by passing the control lever 24 to position 26. To place the transmission in the reverse position, 11 is not necessary. No need to operate any reverse gears or clutches, since the transmission operates in its direct hydrostatic operating mode in the same manner as in its running hydrostatic operating mode. forward at low speed.
It is understood that the commando system described here of the clutches 16, 17 and of the hydraulic device with variable displacement is only one example and that one can actually use, for the same purpose, other controls. more complicated.
It is of course also understood that the electric clutches shown here and effecting the gear changes are also only examples and that one can use, if desired, other clutch systems, for example clutch clutches. hydraulic.control.
