<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Process for rolling low cobalt materials

thickener.
The present invention relates to a process for the rolling of cobalt materials, applicable especially when the latter is in the form of a strip of sheet metal or wire of relatively small thickness or diameter, ie. - say less than 5 mm.
It is known that according to the conventional technique - the rolling of metals from an ingot. a rolling operation is started with a certain number of passes' carried out hot in order to take advantage of the greater malleability of metals at high temperature, and the said operation is terminated by one or more passes carried out cold, in order to give the

says metal a suitable Aurrac * state.
In the particular case of cobalt, one meets some difficulty in carrying out the cold rolling with water of a ductility which is particularly weak at low temperatures, this low ductility being due to the compact hexagonal structure which cobalt presents when is found at tetnpdxaturaa interior at $ one point of transformation (eziv. 420t C).
The practical consequence of this low ducity consists in the fact that. on the one hand many
EMI2.2
This is necessary to obtain a large total reduction in thickness and that on the other hand after each pass a high temperature annealing is necessary in order to give the cobalt sufficient malleability so that it can. aubir the subsequent pass, which in any case can only give rise to a low rate of reduction (of the order of 10% to 15%). This cold rolling process for cobalt.
EMI2.3
therefore proves to be excessively unattractive from both an industrial and economic point of view.
In order to overcome these drawbacks. it has been proposed to carry out the rolling of cobalt in a zone of elevated temperatures. that is to say from 700 C to 1000 C, to take advantage of the fact that in this zone, the cobalt has the face-centered cubic structure, which gives the metal a significantly higher malleability than when presents the compact hexagonal structure. A serious drawback then arose, namely the oxidation of the cobalt which on the one hand causes a significant loss of metal and on the other hand leads to an unacceptable surface condition.
EMI2.4
The object of the present invention is a process which makes it possible to avoid the drawbacks due to the low rate of reduction of the pasees as well as those due to the oxidation of the metal.
The process which is the subject of the present invention is essentially characterized in that a cobalt material of which the purity reaches 98.5% is subjected to a rolling operation, the said operation being carried out on a material whose temperature is between 4000. C and 700 C.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Because of the purity of the metal used, the process described above makes it possible to carry out passes with the reduction rate reached at least 30% and generally 50%; under certain temperature conditions, this reduction rate can even reach 70%.
In order to maintain and possibly reheat the metal at a temperature between 4000 C and 7000 C when it passes between the rolls of the rolling mill. it has been found advantageous to pass the metal inside a device for heating by electric induction, composed of at least one inductor, the excitation current of which is adjusted as a function precisely of the temperature to be reached in the metal passing between the cylinders.
This particularly rapid heating method has the advantage of allowing rolling either continuously, in one direction of movement of the cobalt, or discontinuously with movement alternately in both directions. It also makes it possible not to subject the metal to a heating oxidizing atmosphere, and to reduce the time during which the metal, being at high temperature, can be subjected to natural oxidation,
In addition, the metal's rapid rise in temperature. is favorable to an accentuated release of internal tensions, which facilitates the rolling operation itself.
At the end of the rolling operation, and to give the desired ductility to the rolled metal, which is generally obtained by increasing the size of the grain to a determined limit, the material is again passed through 'inside the inductors, but without exerting pressure on said material as it passes between the rolls, the desired grain size being obtained by adjusting the current in the inductors and the speed of movement of the material in them.
This temperature, which is only maintained for a short time, can be chosen sufficiently high to confer particularly advantageous properties on the cobalt in the sense of risk of oxidation, + 5tound risk of oxidation.
u As an example, the temperature of 1000 C
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
allows to obtain an equi-axis grain of about 0.03 mm in diameter and remarkable behavior in bending and ductility tests.
