<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

.Spherical valve-
The present invention relates to a spherical valve.
The valve according to the invention is characterized firstly in that it comprises a body receiving a valve ball and a pair of accessories each comprising a cavity intended to receive a tubular fluorocarbon seal, such that the vo - the enclosed volume of the gasket greatly exceeds the non-enclosed volume of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
this seal, and that the outer peripheral surface of this seal is @ supported along its entire length, each accessory also comprising a flange coming into contact with the body and thus determining the compressive force applied to the seal.
This valve according to the invention is characterized, secondly, in that it comprises a part forming a handle, a stem and a valve ball, which form a single constituent part sacred in the valve body by the seals and the accessories above.
The invention will be described more fully below with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a valve assembly constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is an exploded view of the valve assembly of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view, taken along line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a valve assembly 10, comprising a valve body 12, a pair of end fittings 14 and 16, a pair of tubular joints 18 and 20, and a handle part and designated d 'generally by reference 22, this part comprising a portion forming the handle itself 24, a rod 26 and a ball 28, the handle, the rod and the ball constituting a single part 22. The valve body 12 has a longitudinal threaded bore 30 which forms a passage for fluid through the valve, and a boss 32 extends radially from the longitudinal passage 30 and has a bore 34 which communicates with this passage 30.
In the opposite ends of the passage 30 are removably screwed the two accessories 14 and 16. These can be provided interchangeable to constitute, by necessity or to satisfy various particular conditions, male or female accessories, straight or conical type. , of a whole series of dimensions, depending on what may be required at each end
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of the valve body 12. It is / thus that these threads of appearance '

. = -.,. ". '! ....", "...- L ..' \. O \ ::" '. "' ¯ .- <" - =. , - conical 36 and 38 have been shown in the drawings, as being formed on the outer ends of the accessories 14 and 16 but it will therefore be understood that these outer ends? can take other forms as desired.
Regardless of the external threaded portions 36 and 38, the two accessories have internal male threaded end portions 40 and 42, preferably with a straight type thread.
At the internal end of the accessory. 14, there is provided a counterbore 44, and furthermore an annular cavity 46 which is concentric with this counterbore and communicates with it. The tubular seal member 18, which is preferably made of a fluorocarbon, for example polytetrafluoroethylene or similar material, is removably inserted into the annular cavity 46-
By virtue of the fact that the seal member is pressed into the cavity
46 and retained by it, it is fully reinforced against excessive strain and / or cold creep, and thus has been given a long useful life.
In particular, the outer peripheral surface of seal 18 is substantially fully supported by the outer wall of cavity 46 and counterbore 44, and most of the inner peripheral surface is supported by the inner wall of the gasket. cavity.
In this way, the enclosed volume of the gasket substantially exceeds the free or non-enclosed volume of this gasket and this is especially advantageous with a gasket material of the fluorohydro-carbon type. The enclosed volume is kept high enough to support the forces without exceeding the modulus of elasticity of the gasket material, but this enclosed volume will not be so large that it suffers from excessive dissipation of forces or a abnormally slow elasticity return. In the illustrated embodiment of the valve according to the invention, using polytetrafluoroethylene seals, the ratio of enclosed volume to volume
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
free of each joint is preferably about 3/1.
Although the access
14 and the seal 18, it will be understood that the seal 20 is similarly mounted in the inner end of the accessory 16 with a counterbore 48 and an annular cavity 50 formed in this accessory denier.
In an assembly as shown in Figure 3 the valve stem 26 extends through the bore 34 of the boss while the valve ball 28 is disposed in the passage 1, gitudinal 30 of the valve body 12 between the inner ends of the two accessories 14 and 16.
The rod 26 has a conferring groove 52 in which an O-ring 54 is mounted to produce a tight seal with the internal surface of the bore:
However, it is important to note that the diameter of the bore
34 is significantly larger than the external diameter of the rod:
so as to form a determined clearance between them, clearance which is so fisant to allow a transverse displacement of the rod relative to the bore 34 before the tightening of the accessories 14 and lE
When the accessories 14 and 16 are screwed into their operating positions, the two tubular joints 18 and 20 clamp the ball member 28 together, so as to enclose this ball and to come into sealing contact with the side faces. opposites thereof, while allowing rota movement of this ball substantially around the longitudinal axis of the t 26.
The ball 28 has the usual bore 56 forming a passage for fluid and it will be seen that, when in the open position as shown in FIG. 3, the passage 56 pre in the ball is in alignment with the passages 58 and 60 accessories 14: and 16, so as to create an unobstructed passage for fluid. It will of course be understood that when the handle is rotated 90 from the position shown, the ball 28 will be rotated 90 to its closed position, in which the two tubular joints 18 and 20 are in sealing contact.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
against the full opposite sides of the ball.
It will be observed that each of the accessories 14 and 16 is further characterized in that it comprises an integral rim which comes into contact with the valve body to define the distance of en-; entry of the accessory inside the valve body and to determine the amount of compressive force applied to the seal, thereby ensuring the application of a precise compressive force to both seals to seal the seal. these against the ball.
In this way, the invention provides a means by which the sealing compressive force can be determined precisely in advance and by which the seals can be suitably designed to give their necessary contribution from the enclosed volume to the non-enclosed volume. , so as to ensure at all times a suitable seal between each sealing element and the ball. Thanks to these characteristics, we realize an extremely compact, economical, while being very safe ball valve.
The ball valve 10 of the present invention is a significant improvement over common ball or ball valves in (a) providing the seal, (b) the construction of a part of the handle, valve stem and ball, and (c) the method of supporting this assembly consisting of the handle, rod and ball.
It will be noted from FIG. 3 that the rod 26 actually floats in the bore 34 since only the O-ring 54 is in contact with the wall of the bore, and thus the element of a part 22 , comprising the handle 24, the rod 26 and the ball 28, is supported substantially by the tubular seal members 18 and 20 which are compressed precisely against the opposite sides of the valve ball 28, ensuring thus maximum sealing efficiency.
Although the invention has been described considering a
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
. preferred embodiment, it is obvious that there is no particular limitation to this embodiment, since numerous modifications and variations can be envisaged therein without thereby departing from the scope of the present patent.
