Abstract

The yarn (of e.g. polyester, polyamide, viscose or cellulose acetate) is drawn between a flat plate and a roller so as to gather up the yarn and increase its bulk. Pref. the plate is formed as a pivotal lever which is urged against the roller by a counter-balance weight, and the yarn is passed through a tensioning device before being wound onto a spool. Pref. the peripheral speed of the roller is between 1 and 3 times the running speed of the yarn, and the weight is movable to vary the pressing force of the plate. Yarn breakage is minimised.
