Abstract
Diamonds are synthesised by subjecting a reaction mixture of graphite and a catalytic metal or alloy contg. inclusions of graphite crystals, to a temp. of at least 1150 degrees C, and a pressure of at least 40 kilobars. Pref. the catalyst is prepd. by cooling a molten bath of the metal or alloy, which is satd. with carbon. The initial rate of cooling of the bath is at least 50 degrees C/min. A considerable number of diamond monocrystals with well defined faces are obtained during a relatively short time. The diamonds have a high abrasive power.
