Abstract
The volume occupied by dry tobacco or to a tobacco which has been dessicated, is increased by impregnating the tobacco with a soln. of an inert gas in a volatile liquid under conditions of temp. and press. to maintain the gas in soln. heating the impregnated tobacco rapidly or quickly reducing the ambient press. to liberate the gas from the soln. present in the impregnated tobacco and to expel the liberated gas from the tobacco together with at least some of the liquid in the vapour state. The impregnating soln. comprises CO2 in soln. in water and the amt. of soln. used to impregnate the tobacco is 15-300%. by wt. of the tobacco, based on dry wt. The resulting tobacco has a moisture content suitable for the production of cigarettes and pipe tobacco.
