Abstract
Optical brighteners for paper, cellulose esters, polyamides and cotton, giving high degree of brightness, consist of stilbene cpds. (where R is optionally substd. (ar)alkyl or aryl, n is integer 0 to 2 and M is H or a monovalent cation). They are prepared by reacting cyanuric chloride or bromide with (a) 4,4'-diaminostilbene-disulphonic acid-(2,2') or its salt, (b) a mercapto cpd. RSH (II), or its alkali salt, and (c) an amine (III). In a preferred process, 1 mol. product obtained by reaction of cyanuric chloride with amine (III) and diaminostilbenesulphonic acid is reacted in last step with 2 mol. mercapto cpd.
