Abstract

Metal sulphide contg material is convertd into the corresponding sulphates by (a) reacting the material with sulphuric acid in a reaction zone at 150-300 degrees C during a period sufficient to convert at least a major proportion of the metal sulphide into the corresponding sulphate, (b) withdrawing sulphur from the reaction zone by passing an inert gas through the reaction zone to remove sulphur essentially at the rate it is formed during the reaction, and (c) recovering the formed metal sulphate. A wide range of sulphide minerals can be converted into sulphates, esp. of Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni or Fe. The quantity of sulphuric acid required for the reaction is reduced to a minimum, and the time required for the reaction is only 20% of that required in previous processes.
