Abstract

In cutting off the top or cap of a hollow glass, ceramic or plastic vessel (a) the glass vessel is slowly rotated round its stationary horizontal axis; and (b) the cap is cut off by the rotation of a vertical cutting disc which can be rotated at high speed beneath the glass vessel, and can be moved up or down. The disc, while rotating is moved vertically upwards with its horizontal axis parallel to that of the vessel so as to start cutting along a circle symmetrical with respect to the vertical plane of the axes of the disc and vessel. The disc is then raised by a height slightly greater than the thickness of the vessel and left rotating so that it then cuts along a single circular arc shorter than before and situated on a single side of the above mentioned vertical plane.
