Abstract
Vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer latex with a solids content of 45-60% the copolymer contg. 5-40% ethylene with K at 20 degrees C (5g/l in cyclohexanone) of 60-80 and particle size of 0.1-2 mu, by introducing into an autoclave while stirring at 30-120 t/min. water contg. 5-20% of the required emulsifier, raising the temp. to 30-90 degrees C putting the autoclave under a pressure of 7-20 bars of ethylene (time To), vinyl acetate contg. the remainder of the emulsifier is added, 7-15% of the soln over To-T1 (1h) 5-10% of T1-T2 (2h) and the rest from T2 at 2-10%/hr. at the same time the ethylene pressure is increased linearly to 30-40 bars at the end of the vinyl acetate addition, meanwhile, from T1, catalyst is added continuously or portionwise up to the end of the vinyl acetate addition. The polymerisation is stopped and pressure reduced to 20-25 bars. After adding antifoaming agent, and degassing, the latex is sepd. Used in making aqs. emulsion paints.
