Abstract
In the hardening or toughening of glass by the known technique of heating it to a specific temp. and then quenching it, heating of the glass is stopped at the moment when the tensions produced in it by heating just disappear and is followed immediately by quenching, the disappearance of the internal tensions esp. being monitored by means of a polarised beam traversing the glass.
