<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>

<EMI ID=5.1>

<EMI ID=7.1>
<EMI ID=10.1>

<EMI ID=13.1>
<EMI ID=14.1>
<EMI ID=16.1>

<EMI ID=18.1>

"Method for manufacturing a drill point" <EMI ID = 1.1>
cation of a drill point and the drill produced by the method according to the invention.
A first object of the present invention is to provide a new drill point of advantageous shape and a new method comprising notable improvements for manufacturing a
such a drill, the shape of the tip of which is particularly improved.
A first aspect of the present invention relates to a method for creating a drill tip from a die, which method includes the following steps:
We take a die comprising a rod whose end is cylindrical. In a hot or cold shaping step, at the end of the rod, using two dies (or dies), two grooves diametrically opposed with respect to the axis of the rod are created, said grooves also being inclined but at angles of opposite sign with respect to the axis of the rod; one then determines the point for which the surfaces of the two splines are closest in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the rod and one then shapes two flat surfaces on the rod, these two flat surfaces being of equal inclination and opposite by with respect to the axis of the rod, these two surfaces intersecting along a line of intersection passing through the axis of the rod in the vicinity or at the point of the axis of
the rod in the vicinity of which the two grooves are the most

planes being slightly advanced angularly along the axis of the rod with respect to the cutting edges of each spline, the slope of each associated face beyond the line of intersection of the two faces, freeing a draft angle behind the cutting edge of each groove.
Preferably, the direction of movement of each part of the die (or die) during the making of the splines forms an acute angle with respect to the cutting edge and
at the trailing edge of said groove produced by said die portion.
Two additional flat surfaces can be produced, these surfaces being substantially parallel to the axis.
of the rod and taken on the part of the end of more
large diameter of this rod.
<EMI ID = 3.1>
produced by the dies or dice during hot or cold forming or can be machined afterwards.
The process for making the drill point can also include an additional turning step to remove the end sides of the drill flutes and make a small ledge behind the cutting edge of each flute.
The structure of the tip can also be improved by giving it a generally slightly tapered shape in the region of the splines so that the part in the vicinity of the shaft of the shank (upper part) is of smaller transverse dimension than the part. in the vicinity of the lower end or free end.
The invention also makes it possible to produce a drill comprising a head, a shank including a part located in the vicinity of the head and externally threaded, and a point
drill bit at the end of the shank remote from the head, said drill point comprising a pair of diametrically opposed splines inclined at equal angles but of opposite signs with respect to the axis of the shank and a pair of planar faces : -, arranged diametrically opposite with respect to the axis of the rod and also inclined at equal angles but of opposite signs with respect to this same axis, these flat faces intersecting along an intersection line passing through the 'axis of the rod in the vicinity of or on an imaginary crossing point corresponding to the point on the axis of the rod where the two splines are closest to one
on the other, proximity measured in a direction perpendicular to this axis, this line of intersection being advanced angularly along the axis of the rod, relative to the cutting edge of each groove, the slope of the associated faces beyond the intersection line freeing up a draft angle behind the cutting edge of each spline.
The bit may also include two additional flat surfaces machined on the tip of the bit disposed substantially parallel to the axis of the shank, taken in the vicinity of the portion of the tip of the bit of greater thickness.
(or larger diameter).
It is also possible to provide a slight ledge behind the cutting edge of each groove by machining the end edges of the drilling grooves by turning.
The structure of the drill according to the invention can also be improved giving the tip of the drill a slightly conical shape in the region of the splines so that the part of the splines adjacent to the head of the drill is of a transverse dimension smaller than the part of the splines in the vicinity of the free end of said drill.
Planar surfaces can intersect at an intersection line above, below, or at the imaginary crossing point.
The invention will be better understood with the aid of the following description relating to exemplary embodiments given for explanatory purposes and in no way limiting, with reference to the attached fibers on which is shown:

The production of a drill point according to the present invention begins with the production of a rod 10. This rod of cylindrical shape at its end may be of uniform section or provided with a head or may also be externally threaded, or be of 'a diameter such that a thread of suitable structure can be hollowed out.
The end of the rod or die 10 on which the drill point is to be produced will be designated in the following as the free end 11 and may be cylindrical, conical or stepped.
A pair of dice or dice used simultaneously
<EMI ID = 5.1>
makes it possible to shape a pair of straight grooves 12 as shown in Figures 1 to 4 attached.
During the shaping operation, the free end of the rod is compressed between the two die parts whose
<EMI ID = 6.1>
a pair of straight splines (i.e. rectilinear generatrices) diametrically opposed 12 also inclined with respect to the axis of the rod, but of angle of inclination
of opposite sign with respect to the same axis, i.e. making
<EMI ID = 7.1>
splines are rectilinear (or straight) and not helical.
This shaping operation will be described in more detail below.
The metal repelled during the shaping of the splines 12 constitutes a pair of shoulders 14, and the shaping operation is such that these shoulders increase the transverse dimension of the point, dimension measured perpendicular to the axis of the rod 13 up to a value substantially greater than the desired minimum diameter of the threaded portion of the rod. When the final drill point is carried out by operations which will be described later, operations carried out at the free end of the shank, the size of the hole drilled by the drill point will be sufficient to allow the penetration of the shank but will not be not sufficient so that the thread of part 10 of the rod cannot create its own thread.
In Figure 2, there is shown the drill tip blank in Figure 1 and seen along the line of sight A shown in the same Figure 1. The groove is shaped
in V, a pair of opposing walls 15 intersecting in a
line 16. These leading and trailing walls form between them a dihedral angle of value 2a. The angles a and b defined previously are such that they give a correct cutting angle for the final drill point, according to mathematical relations explained later.
As the splines are straight and of opposite configuration with respect to one another along the axis of the rod 10, there is a point indicated by X in FIG. 1 for which the center line 16 of each spline is the most close to the other, line on the other groove, the distance between these two lines being measured in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the rod. In other words, the perpendicular common to the center lines 16 of each groove passes through the axis of the tube at point X. At this point, the body of the point between the two grooves is the thinnest and the position of the point of X crossing must be established before proceeding to the next step
realization of the drill point.
5i one wishes to achieve a satisfactory drill point, it is necessary to perform other machining or shaping operations on the free end 11 of the shank 10 from the rough construction of the point shown.
in Figures 1, 2 and 3 attached.
Two flat faces also inclined with respect to the axis of the rod are machined or shaped by removing metal
to the free part 11 of the rod in the vicinity of or at the point of intersection X of the splines in order to produce a drill point having a scissor-shaped end and two splines coming from this end. In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 6, these flat surfaces intersect above the imaginary crossing point; in Figures 7, 8, 13 and 14, they intersect below the crossing point and in Figures 9 and 12, they intersect substantially at the crossing point.
Thus, the machining operation, or any other shaping, is carried out to remove metal on the section BB shown in FIG. 1 in order to produce a preliminary drill tip as shown in FIG. 4 attached.
This operation is carried out by any suitable means which makes it possible to form two equally inclined plane faces. For example, a reamer having a V-section can be applied; on the end of the drill in a direction coinciding with the direction of the desired line of intersection of the two planar faces, i.e. the chisel point of the final drill point. In another embodiment, these flat faces can be produced by rolling or grinding, provided that the result is sufficiently flat faces. These flat faces are inclined at the same angle with respect to the axis of the rod and

In Figures 4, 5 and 6, the plane faces are designated by the reference 17 at their lines of intersection,
the chisel point of the drill is indicated by the reference 18.
The position of the intersection line 18 is an important factor for proper operation of the drill tip. If the screw is correctly aligned during the production of the flat faces 17, the line of intersection of said flat faces 18 will make a slight advanced angle with respect to the edge.
cutting flutes 12. Thus, the cutting edge 19 is in each case spaced from the line 18 defining the scissor end so that the slope of the metal of the bit tip

line 18, Drink such that a sufficient draft angle is left behind the cutting edge 19 of each groove for a goal
drilling.
Before the end of the machining operation, it is necessary to orient the rod in a suitable way to achieve
an angle [pound] between the direction represented by the arrow C
(i.e. along the line of intersection 18 of the two planar faces) and the part of the drill tip having the largest transverse dimensions measured perpendicularly
to the axis, so that the scissor tip is positioned correctly relative to the cutting edge 19 of the splines.
If a reamer is used to make the point, this reamer acts in the direction of arrow C.
In the preliminary embodiment of the tip shown in Figures 1 to 6, the flat faces 17 intersect just above the point of intersection X of the grooves 12.
In FIGS. 7 and 8, a point has been shown in a preliminary stage of production in any point similar to the points described above, with the exception of the line of intersection of the flat faces 17a which intersect in these figures just below. below the cross point X (see figure 7). This embodiment has the consequence that the cutting edges of the grooves are rectilinear up to the point where they meet the scissor tip 18a of the tip of the drill and this preferred embodiment gives cutting properties better than those obtained with the described embodiments. previously for which a small arc existed on the cutting edges near the scissor tip. This structure can be observed by comparing the slightly curved central region

Additional operations are advantageously performed on the preliminary drill tip, obtained by the previous operations, in order to obtain drilling performance.

identical result operation consisting in removing metal from the swelling parts or shoulder of the point. The result

also make it possible to notice that the line of intersection of the plane faces 17b intersects in this case substantially at the point of: crossing X. In this case, the cutting edges 19b of the point still have a slight curvature before their
<EMI ID = 14.1>
In Figures 9 to 11 there is shown a new pair of planar surfaces 20 machined on the drill point in its widest part, i.e. the part 14 which thickened during formation. drill splines (see figure 1), these surfaces 20 may be parallel to each other and equally spaced on opposite edges of the drill axis or may be inclined towards each other by making a small angle between them so that the widest part of the drill is at the location indicated by 21 in the figures. In another embodiment of the invention, the surfaces 20 have a shoulder after the location indicated by 21.
The surfaces 20 and the faces 17b produced on
the tip of the drill are all perpendicular to an imaginary plane indicated by 22 in the figures and passing through
the axis of the drill shank. This imaginary plane coincides with that of the sheet of paper for FIG. 11. Thanks to this property, it is possible to produce the faces 17b and the surface 20 simultaneously if desired. However, it is not essential that the surfaces 20 be parallel to the line <EMI ID = 15.1> of intersection of the plant faces 17b if these are to be machined separately.
In order to avoid too rapid wear or damage to the cutting edges of the drilling flutes, an additional turning operation can be carried out to give the results indicated by the comparison of figures 13 and 14. This operation eliminates the sharp angles which exist without
this machining on the edges of the grooves; this operation is carried out by machining the plane sides of the plane surfaces 20.
Note that the angle between the surfaces 23 obtained
by turning and cutting edges 19 is greater than 90 [deg.]
and as well as the cutting edge is particularly robust. Preferably, the turning operation does not completely remove the flat surfaces 20, which has the effect of leaving a free space behind the edges of the grooves,
<EMI ID = 16.1>
If the sharp-angled edges made by machining or
any other operation during the production of the flat faces 20 remain on the tip of the drill, some difficulties appear for the drilling of deep holes in particular, since a
progressive wear takes place particularly on the cutting edges of the splines and especially towards the end
point, so that a protruding ledge begins
to form on the tip of the drill bit as it sinks. A machining operation is performed to remove the metal protruding from it outside the circle shown at 23 on
the designs, which eliminates the extreme edges of the grooves creating a small flat behind the edge of
cut of the groove concerned.
The same machining operation can be used to reduce the diameter behind the end of the drill tip, in order to provide free space for chips and reduce
the frictional resistance to rotation. This may result in the formation of a shoulder on or in the vicinity
region 24 in Figures 7 and 9; we can also
create a ledge on the end of the drill, part 21 being
the thickest part of the drill point.
Instead of or before machining the planar faces 20,
the sides of the tip can be flattened during the operation
for shaping the grooves. The dies (or dice) used in the initial spline forming operation may be similar to those shown schematically in Figure 16. In this figure, the lower die 25 has a pair of opposing flat side surfaces 26 which prevent the metal from breaking out. creep
outwards in a radial direction, towards the bulge
14 which was shown in Fig. 1. This prevents any possibility of rupture in the vicinity of the narrow part x of the groove and also significantly prevents the formation of bulges such as 14. In addition, if the dies have flat surfaces 26, it It is not necessary to carry out an additional machining operation to flatten the opposite planar faces 20.
As shown in Figure 16, the dies (or dice) move toward each other in a direction forming an acute angle at all points to the leading edges.
and spline leakage, unlike the prior art method for making splines in which the dies were moved together in a direction perpendicular to a pair of faces of the splines.
Using dies such as those shown in Figure 16, it is easy to profile the leading edge of the splines to the desired cutting angle.
The geometric structure of the drill tip can be chosen to have a suitable cutting angle and also so that the clearance angle behind the cutting edge 19 of the flute is of suitable value.

In Figure 17, there is shown a sectional view along the line DD of Figure 14 of the drill and indicated the position of the rake angle x and - of the clearance angle y. This section is taken along a plane parallel to the axis of the drill, said plane being perpendicular to the leading wall. The rake angle x allows the chips thrown upwards by the bit tip to be eliminated while the clearance angle y allows the resistance to rotation of the bit tip to be reduced to a minimum value even if wear appears at the end of the cutting edge.
