<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>
<EMI ID=5.1>
mandrin.

<EMI ID=22.1>
Method and apparatus for producing angles of low thickness and curved shape.
The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for manufacturing angles of curved shape, preferably cylindrical, the ends of which are susceptible
to overlap, and which are made from flat sheets or strips.
A method is already known which makes it possible to produce, from a metal blank, a curved angle iron, preferably cylindrical, one of the wings of which defines, strictly speaking, a cylinder and the other of which is annular in shape and extends. in a plane perpendicular to the axis of this cylinder, i.e.
outward or inward. This known process consists in the partial stamping of an annular sheet blank. In the case of stamping leading to an angle iron with an internal flange, the elongation of the metal is very important and therefore does not make it possible to obtain, without breaking, a flange of significant dimensions. The maximum admissible elongation is in this case
of the order of D to D, D being the mean diameter of the angle
<EMI ID = 1.1>
On the other hand, the stamping process involves considerable tooling costs, which cannot be envisaged as soon as the diameter of the angles to be manufactured becomes too large. Moreover, this known process requires the use of sheets of a regular thickness as well as a preliminary cutting of the annular blanks. In addition to the operation of cutting the annular blanks, an operation entailing non-negligible costs, the known method does not allow the use of the circular blanks originating from the cutting of the annular blanks, as soon as the circular blanks have too small diameters. This known process therefore results in considerable material falls and does not allow the use of so-called downgraded sheets.
In addition, it frequently leads to local ruptures of the annular wings perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder, especially when the annular wings are directed towards said axis inside the cylindrical wing of the angle iron.
The present invention overcomes the aforementioned drawbacks and aims to provide a manufacturing process for cylindrical sheet angles which is simple, rapid, avoids material falls and allows the use of defective or downgraded sheets.
Another object of the present invention is to enable
the manufacture, from a sheet or a flat strip, of a curved angle iron having a cylindrical wing and an annular wing, angle iron of the type comprising a slot along its entire length along a generatrix so that the two side ends of the angle iron may overlap.
This object is achieved in accordance with the invention owing to the fact that the flat sheet is first formed into a cylinder split along a generatrix, so that the ends of the sheet
overlap, which is clamped on a support such as a mandrel, movable in rotation around the axis of said cylinder, the part of this sheet cylinder intended to constitute the cylindrical flange of the angle iron and that during the rotation of said support is gradually folded by pushing either outward or inward of successive areas adjacent to the part
<EMI ID = 2.1>
the latter occupies a position at least approximately perpendicular to the axis of the cylindrical part.
Thanks to the invention, even relatively fragile sheets can be used since, during their transformation into angles, they locally undergo a kind of work hardening which increases their mechanical strength. Furthermore, as the forming of the angle iron is carried out gradually and not abruptly as during a stamping, there is no formation of cracks or cracks in the annular flange perpendicular to the cylindrical flange, even if it goes inward. In addition, this method makes it possible to use sheets whose thickness varies locally.
One of the essential advantages of the process according to the invention lies in the fact that the starting sheet can be wound around the support mandrel without having previously undergone permanent deformations in order to have a cylindrical shape. Thus, during the embossing operation, the annular and cylindrical flanges of the angle iron are formed simultaneously in a single step, and it is the annular wing which gives the angle iron sufficient rigidity to allow it to maintain permanent bending. . It is however note that, because the ends of the angle iron are likely to overlap, the angle iron retains a certain elasticity which allows its diameter to be easily adjusted and used to cover the end
cylindrical bodies whose diameter may vary within a certain range of values.
To take into account a certain elasticity of the folded sheet, elasticity which gives the annular wing of the angle iron a tendency to return by a few degrees towards its starting position before the progressive folding, the annular wing is folded back until it forms with the axis of the cylindrical wing an angle slightly less than or greater than 90 [deg.], preferably of the order of 87 [deg.] or 93 [deg.].
The apparatus for the manufacture of cylindrical angles made from flat sheets comprises a cylindrical mandrel capable of being driven in rotation about its axis, and designed to receive the part of the sheet intended to subsequently constitute the cylindrical wing of the angle iron, as well as a tool
forming or folding arranged in the extension of the mandrel to form the annular flange of the angle iron. The apparatus according to the invention is particularly remarkable in that the cylindrical mandrel is provided with a cylindrical bearing face and an annular bearing face integral with one another, in that the means of clamping act on the part of the sheet intended
in constituting the cylindrical flange of the angle iron to fix said part on the cylindrical bearing face of the mandrel and in that the working tool is mounted to move in two directions which are perpendicular to each other and of which the one is perpendicular to the axis of said mandrel and the other of which is parallel to said axis.
Thus, the apparatus according to the invention comprises both forming means in the form of a mandrel comprising a cylindrical bearing face and an annular bearing face, and clamping means for holding the sheet. flat thin still flexible around the forming means during the spinning operation with the working tool.
The forming or folding tool consists of a roller whose working face is slightly curved, the tangent to the
<EMI ID = 3.1>
<EMI ID = 4.1>
this passing through the same radial plane as said tangent to the working face.
The working face rotates around an axis which is either parallel to the axis of the cylindrical bearing face or inclined at an angle between 65 [deg.] To 80 [deg.] And is preferably of the order of
75 [deg.].
The forming or folding tool is mounted on a first movable carriage in a first so-called radial plane passing
by the axis of the cylindrical bearing face and in a first direction parallel to said axis, this first carriage itself being mounted on a second movable carriage in a plane parallel to said first plane and in a second direction perpendicular to said axis and to said first direction and parallel to said first plane.
The position of the forming tool is adjustable on the first carriage so that the axis of rotation of the tool can be adjusted relative to the axis of the chuck.
Advantageously, the annular bearing face of the mandrel
is weakly frustoconical and its generators are inclined
<EMI ID = 5.1>
mandrel.
The annular bearing face extends either towards the inside or towards the outside of the cylindrical volume delimited by the cylindrical bearing face of the mandrel.
In the case where the annular bearing face is located outside the cylindrical bearing face, the mandrel is hollow and comprises inside the cylindrical face a stop table for the clamping means comprising several sectors.
clamps which have the form of disk sectors and are. capable of being inscribed by their periphery in the cylinder delimited by the cylindrical bearing face of the mandrel and which are guided radially on the stop table and are associated with a spacing device bearing on the stop table and acting radially on the clamping sectors.
The clamping sector spacing device comprises a hollow corner with a frustoconical or pyramidal periphery
and a threaded rod mounted coaxially with the mandrel on the built-in table and passing through the hollow corner, the inner ends of said sectors comprising frustoconical contact faces capable of coming to bear against the frustoconical periphery of said wedge under the effect of a control member taking bearing on said rod.
Each clamping sector has two oblong holes
guide radially aligned and the stop table comprises for each clamping sector two guide pins aligned radially and penetrating without appreciable lateral play into the oblong guide holes.
At least one of the oblong guide holes communicates,
at each of its ends, with a radial bore made in the clamping sector and receiving a return spring resting, on the one hand, against a guide pin and, on the other hand, against the bottom of the radial bore.
For the mandrel, the annular bearing face of which extends towards the inside of the cylindrical bearing face, the clamping means comprise a bearing band and a clamping strap provided with a clamping lever.
The object of the present invention will be understood even better with the aid [deg.] Of the following description of an embodiment of the method and of the apparatus for manufacturing curved angles and of several variants of different means forming part. of said apparatus, this description being given with reference to the appended drawing in which:

towards the inside of the cylindrical bearing face 3b, it is preferably given an inclination slightly different from 90 [deg.] with respect to the cylindrical face 3b, but preferably not exceeding 87 [deg.] or 93 [deg.]. (See figures 7). In this case also, the clamping means 5 comprise a thin metal cylindrical bearing strip 14 fixed for example by a flange 15 on an external shoulder 3d of the mandrel 3 and applied against the cylindrical bearing face 3b to the using a tightening strap 16 provided with a tightening lever, not shown.
The folding tool 7 consists of a roller provided with a working face 7a slightly curved in the radial plane passing through the axis of the mandrel 3, the tangent T to the working face 7a being inclined from 5 to 8 [ deg.] with respect to the generatrix of the cylindrical bearing face 3b and passing through the same radial plane containing the axis 3a and the tangent T. The roller 7 and therefore the face
working 7a rotates around an axis 7b which is either parallel
to the axis 3a of the mandrel 3 (figure 8), or inclined so as to
form an angle with said axis 3a, angle between 65 [deg.] and
80 [deg.] And preferably being of the order of 75 [deg.]. This angle of inclination can be adjusted due to the fact that the yoke 8 supporting the axis 7b
of the roller 7 is adjustable in two slides 17,18 of a first carriage 19 which is mounted to move in the direction of the
double arrow F extending in a radial plane passing through the axis 3a of the mandrel 3, this direction F also being parallel
said axis 3a. The first carriage 19 slides under the control of a screw and nut transmission 20 actuated for example by a handwheel 21 on a second carriage 22 movably mounted on a fixed support 23. This second carriage 22 can move along a
<EMI ID = 22.1>
to axis 3a of mandrel 3 and direction F. and is parallel
to the radial plane containing the axis 3a and the direction of movement of the first carriage 19. The drive of the second carriage 22 can also be done by means of a screw type transmission
endless and nut 24, the endless screw being actuated by a flywheel 25. Of course, other technically equivalent means can be used to drive the carriages. The same is true for the spacing device which could include hydraulic or other means for acting on the clamping sectors.
To make a curved angle iron, a sheet 1 or 2 is first placed in or on the mandrel 3 and after having clamped it between the cylindrical bearing face 3b and the clamping means 5, the tool is put in place. working 7 in front of the part of tale projecting from the mandrel 3 which will then be rotated so as to have a linear peripheral speed of the order of 4 to
15 m / sec, preferably 6 to 13 m / sec. At the same time, the embossing tool is moved radially outwards with a speed of the order of 1 to 5 mm / second. During the folding operation, the sheet part subsequently constituting the annular wing gradually takes the various shapes indicated in dotted lines in FIG. 3 before taking its final shape.
It is easily understood that the folding of the sheet is done, for a local area considered, by successive folding or pushing operations in the radial direction and that between two successive operations in the same area, a folding or pushing operation is carried out. embossing on all the peripheral zones of the bending place while progressing in the same direction of a zone considered
to the neighboring area and so on.
Of course, the various embodiments described above may undergo a number of modifications without departing for this from the scope of the invention, the scope defined by the appended claims. It is obvious
that instead of scrolling the sheet to be folded in front of the working tool, it is also possible to give a fixed position to said
sheet and move the working tool both perpendicular to the unfolded part of the sheet and along the latter.
