Description

 <EMI ID=1.1>

 <EMI ID=2.1>

 <EMI ID=3.1>

  The present invention relates to an installation making it possible to use the cold available in a liquefied natural gas, during the production of desalinated water, and this according to the process described in Italian patent n [deg.] 1,045,635, which presents improvements and variants allowing to arrive

a simplification and a better efficiency of the installation and which, by providing in addition the actuation of an electric generator or alternator, allows a more complete autonomy

of the installation with regard to the energy necessary for its operation.

As is known from the process of this prior Italian patent, the production of desalinated water according to the process of direct injection of a cooling fluid (liquid n-butane or Freon) in salt water (SRF process or "Secondary Refrigerant Freeze" process) includes the transfer of frigories from a

liquefied natural gas, passing from the liquid phase to the vapor phase, to a refrigerant (n-butane) passing from

the vapor phase to the liquid phase, thanks to three closed energy-generating circuits, traversed by a refrigerant, such as propylene or a halogenated derivative of hydrocarbons (Freon), these circuits each consisting of a boiler, a superheater with seawater, a turbine and a condenser also acting as a heater for the above liquefied natural gas. The three condensers are arranged in series in the direction of the flow of liquefied natural gas and therefore they provide condensation at gradually increasing temperatures,

these condensers being further used to heat each

the condensates of the condensers which precede them. The condensed stream of liquefied natural gas, one or more of these turbines being mechanically coupled to one or more compressors intended to compress the coolant vapors coming from the crystallization apparatus, as well as to an electric generator or alternator.

In this way, in addition to achieving a reduction in the necessary elements (a single boiler and a single superheater, instead of three), we also achieve complete autonomy of the installation with regard to the energy required to its operation, since all the electrical power necessary to actuate the various pumps and the various mechanisms inherent in this installation is now supplied by the electric generator or the alternator.

According to a variant of the present invention, the aforementioned turbines, two or more in number, of the single closed circuit, energy generator, are connected in series or in cascade with one another with intermediate samples supplying the aforementioned condensers of the series of condensers, and with a final discharge supplying the first condenser of this series of condensers.

According to yet another simplification of the present invention, applicable if the pressure difference between the boiler and the first condenser allows it, a single turbine is used in the single closed circuit, energy generator, comprising intermediate withdrawals respectively supplying the said condensers of the series of condensers, with a final discharge supplying the first condenser of the series.

According to yet another characteristic of the presen-sats of the three energy-generating circuits are then reheated in a final heater of liquefied natural gas and

from there sent to the respective boilers. All the mechanical energy produced by the turbines of the three energy-generating circuits is used to actuate a single, centrifugal or axial compressor, which has the function of sucking the vapors of the refrigerant fluid (n-butane) from the crystallization of the desalination plant and compress them to the pressure necessary to obtain their liquefaction in the apparatus for melting the installation, into which these vapors are sent.

 <EMI ID = 1.1>

densify all the vapor coming from the crystallization apparatus for known thermodynamic reasons, the excess of vapor compared to the possibilities of condensation of the fusion apparatus is condensed mainly in the boilers of the three circuits generating energy and , according to a minor part, in the final heater of the liquefied natural gas, after over-compression to a slightly higher pressure thanks to the action of one or more additional mobile crowns

of the centrifugal or axial compressor.

Now, for the sake of simplification with a significant resulting reduction in the cost of installation, instead of three closed energy generating circuits, a single closed energy generating circuit is used which (according to a characteristic of the present invention ) includes in particular two or more turbines supplied in parallel by the boiler of the aforementioned single circuit, the discharge of these turbines is sent, with a calculated weight of expanding gas, to supply a corresponding number of condensers connected in series in the direction of te Invention, the refrigerant which, according to the abovementioned SRF process, is injected into the crystallization apparatus of the desalination installation in order to obtain the formation of ice crystals following its evaporation, is the product called Freon R 114.

In addition, since the major part of the vapor of the refrigerant fluid (Frecn R114) coming from the crystallization apparatus is sent for its condensation in the boiler of the single closed circuit, generator of energy, so that the turbines are able to supply the power necessary for actuating the compressors as well as the alternator, so that a sufficient quantity of steam is no longer available for the melting apparatus of the installation, this melting apparatus, according to another characteristic of the invention, is split into two devices which are supplied in parallel by "granite", that is to say by a stream of water comprising approximately
20% of ice crystals to be dissolved, one of these devices being heated by circulation of marine water or other available fluid,

   while the other is heated by circulation of coolant vapors from the crystallization apparatus.

Finally, since the supply of the final heater

natural gas liquefied by a modest fraction by weight of the vapor of the refrigerant coming from overcompression,

of the crystallization apparatus, as is achieved according to the aforementioned Italian patent, is somewhat complicated and costly, due to the freezing of the water which saturates the incoming vapor, requiring the use of a final heater

a special construction, that is to say a heater built in duplicate in whole or in part, in order to allow continuity of operation by performing the alternating thawing of one and the other of these devices,

 <EMI ID = 2.1>

in order to further simplify and ensure a better efficiency of the installation, and therefore an improved economy, the overcompression of the refrigerant vapor is eliminated and the final heater of the liquefied natural gas is supplied with propylene vapors at an appropriate pressure, brought to circulate in a closed autonomous circuit consisting essentially of an evaporator (heated by sea water or another available fluid), the outlet of which is connected, by means of a valve throttle and adjustment, at the inlet of this final heater, the outlet of which is itself in turn connected via a pump, to the inlet of the evaporator.

Finally, according to a variant of the present invention, the fluid operating in the abovementioned closed autonomous circuit may be propane or another suitable fluid (Freon for example), instead of being propylene.

The invention will be described more fully below with reference to the appended drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment, this embodiment being only a nonlimiting example since technical or constructive variants can be made without thereby departing from the part of the present invention.

This drawing is a schematic block-type view of an installation according to the invention, which is of a particular embodiment with two cascade turbines and two compressors supplied in parallel by the vapor of a fluid refrigerant.
(Freon R114) or n-butane or another product from a crystallization device. If reference is made to this drawing, the reference number 1 designates the path of the liquefied natural gas which, while being progressively heated by a series of condensers 2 and 3 and by a final heater 4, occurs in

5 in the form of a vapor. The above series of condensers

2 and 3 is part of the single closed circuit, energy generator, which includes the boiler 6, the heater 7 supplied with sea water or other available fluid, by means of the inlet pipe 8 and the outlet pipe 9 , and two turbines 10 and 11 which are connected in cascade with intermediate sampling
12 sent to the condenser 3 and with final discharge 13 sent to the first condenser 2 of the above series of condensers. As the condensate leaving the condenser 2 is too cold to be sent to the boiler 6, it is passed through the pump 14, the duct 15 and the coils 16 and 17 so that it heats up respectively in the condenser 3 and in the final heater 4. Likewise, the condensate leaving the condenser 3 is sent by the pump 18 and the conduit 19 into

the coil 20 so as to heat up in the final heater. At the outlet of this final heater, said condensates are therefore at the appropriate temperature, by

to the boiler 6 via the conduit 21. The two turbines 10 and 11 are then mechanically coupled respectively to the two compressors 22 and 23 having the function of compressing the vapors of fluid refrigerant (Freon R114) coming from the device 24. The turbine 11 is also mechanically coupled also to an electric generator or an alternator 25. The two compressors 22 and 23 are supplied in parallel from the crystallization apparatus 24 and the fluid refrigerant vapor leaving in the state compressed from these two compressors is sent in part to the boiler 6 to condense there, via line 26, and for the rest it is sent through line 28 into the melter 27

to condense there. The condensing refrigerant in the boiler 6 and in the melting apparatus 27 is then sent, via the respective conduits 29 and 30, to the decanting tank 31 where it is separated from the thawing water from the ice when the apparatus melting is of the type in direct contact between the vapors and the "granite", then it is injected by the pump 32 into the above-mentioned crystallization apparatus 24.

Obviously, if there is no such direct contact, that is to say if the heat transmission in the melting device takes place via tubes, in this case not having a mixture between the liquid Freon (or n-butane) and the thawing fresh water, there is no separation and the device 31 is a simple tank.

In addition to the aforementioned melting apparatus 21 heated by the coolant vapor, brought by the conduit 28, one can also use a second fusing apparatus 33 which is warmed by circulation of water or of another available fluid brought by the intake duct 34 and leaving this fusion apparatus by the discharge conduit 35. The two fusion apparatuses 27 and 33 are supplied in parallel, via
