Abstract

This contact pin for soldering into the plated-through holes in printed circuit boards is split (17,18) lengthways and shaped to form three flexible pins, which slide against each other during insertion, making good contact but allowing space for the solder to flow between the pin surfaces and the hole plating. The centre pin is cut so that its inner edge is slightly conical, while the outer edge (30), which is hardened by compression, has a groove (32) to allow solder flow. The outer edges of the two outer pins are rounded off to allow better contact with the hole. The advantage of this pin over conventional round ones is that it is coated with lead and tin solder rather than a precious metal. Precious metals are usually used with round cross-section tinned pins to prevent the problem of tiny slivers of tinning scraped off during insertion, which may cause short-circuits.

Description

<EMI ID=1.1>

<EMI ID=2.1>

 Electric contact pin for printed circuits.

This invention relates to improvements and particularities related to the electrical contact pin as described and claimed in Belgian Patent No. 894,258 filed on August 31
1982 in the name of the applicant.

Although numerous tests have confirmed the properties and benefits of the above pen, a side effect has also been identified. This concerns certain applications where the mounting part of the pin in a printed circuit board is not coated with a precious metal (Au, PdNi, ...) but with a lead-tin alloy.

Pressing such a lead-tin coated pin into a hole results in a flake or burr formation in which the flakes thus formed extend over a more or less large distance from the pin hole and can give rise to undesired contacts.

Depending on the thickness of the lead-tin alloy, this pen is used in two applications.

In a first application, the fixing part of the pin is covered with a thick lead tin

<EMI ID = 1.1>

printed circuit board are soldered here by adding heat, with or without applying additional solder by means of a solder ring.

Due to the large interface between pin and hole, the tin-lead is scraped during pressing so that only the solder on the sides of the pin and on the inside of the hole can participate in the fusion or reflow operation.

In a second application, the pins are made of lead-tin alloy in the mounting portion

<EMI ID = 2.1>

so that a dry connection is created. This may produce burrs, which, although smaller than in the first application, may come off the pen when the card is vibrated; this can lead to unwanted short circuits.

With the pin that is the object of the above patent, this flake formation can be important because of the large contact surface between the outside of the middle leg and the inside of the hole (see figure 6 of patent No. 894.258).

The object of the present invention is to counteract this chip formation and also to achieve a better solder connection between the pin and the hole of the printed circuit board.

Further details and features will be elucidated by the following description of an embodiment of the invention with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 14 is a cross-sectional view of the pin at the mounting zone in a hole of a printed circuit board; Figure 15: A macroscopic representation of the same cross-section after mounting in a hole and after the soldering process by "reflow" or fusing the tin lead coating of pin and hole.

Figure 14 shows the wide central part 13 of the contact pin 10. Over a certain distance, this section 13 of the pin, as already described in the main patent, has been cut twice lengthwise 17, 18 to form three elastically deformable legs 19, 20 and 21.

According to the invention, the outside 30 of the middle leg 20 is provided with a longitudinal and centrally located depression or groove 32.

During the manufacture of the pen, this indentation 32 in the outside 30 of the pen results in a slight corrugation of the sides, which moreover increases the hardness of the corrugated outside 30 of the middle leg 20 by compressing material.

Preferably on the middle leg
20, towards the inside 34, a slightly conical shape
36 is given to promote the wedging action of the center leg 20 between the outer legs 19, 21 and referred to in the main patent.

Frequent tests have also made it possible to establish an optimal ratio between the width M of the middle leg 20 and the width B of the outer legs 19, 21.

The value of this ratio will mainly be between 1.05 and 1.20 and will preferably be 1.13 with a material thickness D of + 0.63 mm. and a total width of the 1.05 mm.

By following these proportions one obtains a self-centering of the pin body with respect to the pin hole.

It has also been found that the rounding of the outer corners R2 preferably has a larger radius than the rounding of the inward angles R1 of the outer legs.

As is clearly visible in figure 15, after the fusion of the tin-lead coating of the pin and hole, a remarkable electrical connection is obtained in which the groove 32 and further all angles between the legs 19, 20 and 21 on the one hand and between the legs and the hole on the other hand must be completely sealed with tin-lead alloy.
