Abstract
The method is applicable in the machine manufacturing industry for thermochemical treatment of tools, made from high-speed steel. It prevents the formation of brittle nitride phases upon reduced process duration. It also increases the impact toughness and durability of the steel in operating conditions. The nitriding is carried out prior to hardening the steels at a temperature from 600 to 750 degrees C for 15 to 30 minutes and a pressure of ammonia of 9.3-16.0 x 10<3>Pa. Immediately after the nitriding, the heating process continues in the same furnace until the hardening temperature is reached, which is followed by triple tempering. If the vacuum furnace cannot provide enough heat for hardening, the steel is cooled slowly and the hardening and tempering processes are carried out in other facilities.
