Abstract

"FONTE DE RADIAçãO RADIOATIVA PARA BRAQUITERAPIA OFTáLMICA". A presente invenção refere-se a uma fonte de radiação radioativa da invenção que é adequada para braquiterapia e especialmente para braquiterapia ocular ou oftálmica, tal como no tratamento de degeneração da mácula, de preferência, degeneração da mácula relacionada à idade (AMD). A fonte de radiação da invenção compreende uma fonte de radiação para braquiterapia que tem um elemento de emissão de radiação alongado (1) dentro de um meio alongado para retenção (2), de preferência disposto de tal modo que o eixo geométrico longitudinal do elemento de emissão de radiação e o eixo geométrico longitudinal do dito meio para retenção estão alinhados. O dito meio para retenção compreende uma seção de blindagem (3) e uma seção de transição de radiação (4). A dita seção de blindagem (3) cobre o dito elemento de emissão de radiação pelo menos parcialmente para atenuar substancialmente qualquer radiação emitida na direção da dita seção de blindagem. De preferência, a seção de blindagem cobre o elemento até cerca de 30 a 90%, de preferência 40 a 70% e mais preferivelmente de 50 a 60%.
