FUNDAMENTOS DA INVENÇÃOBACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
1. Campo técnico1. Technical field
This invention generally relates to internal combustion engines, and more particularly to diesel engine cylinder linings.
2. Técnica relacionada2. Related Technique
Diesel engines are known to consume relatively high amounts of oil, and in this process produce undesirable exhaust emissions. Therefore, there are ongoing efforts to improve diesel engine oil consumption performance, which in turn results in improved exhaust emissions. Unfortunately, due to the materials commonly used for diesel engine cylinder linings such as cast iron and steel, and the required cylinder bore finishing processes such as polishing to achieve high engine performance standards, little progress has been made in relation to coating to improve oil consumption and to reduce flush emissions.
Thus, we have a known design feature that can be used on the side of the liner to improve oil consumption, and in turn reduce flush emissions. The feature goes by several names, including “economy rings”, “anti-polish rings”, “fire rings”, “anti-drag rings”, and “scraper rings.” Independent donome, the feature is an annular strip made of material. which is inserted into a machined annular socket on top of the barrel liner. The annular strip has an inside diameter providing a raised portion having a diameter slightly smaller than the inside diameter of the cylinder, with the raised portion occupying most of the volume of the slot, where the volume of the slot is defined by an inboard cylinder liner wall, a piston top ring and top face of the piston.
In this way, the raised portion of the annular band acts to paralyze the upper face of the piston as the piston approaches a top dead center (TDC) position by scraping deposits from the face, sometimes referred to as bore polishing. In addition, the raised portion of the strip acts as a mechanical barrier to up-scraped oil and thrown-out oil, both of which are major contributors to oil consumption. Thus, the range provides beneficial results as it reduces oil consumption, reduces exhaust emissions, and also prolongs engine life.
Although the annular bands described above are beneficial to engine performance and the environment, they come at a cost. As explained, they are constructed as separate rings of material, and therefore not only require separate manufacturing operations from the cylinder liner, but also require the cylinder liner to undergo secondary machining operations for its installation. In addition, given the nature of their use, the tolerances between band and cylinder liner need to be closely controlled to ensure proper engine performance. Consequently, manufacturing and assembly efficiencies are reduced with the incorporation of the bands, and thus the cost to produce engines using the bands is increased.
A cylinder liner made in accordance with the present invention greatly overcomes or minimizes any of the prior art limitations described above, thereby allowing diesel engines to operate at an increased level of performance by reducing their oil consumption and exhaust emissions, and improving their life. useful, all at a reduced custoglobal.

1 illustrates a cylinder liner 10 constructed in accordance with the present preferred embodiment of the invention disposed in a cylinder block 12 of a diesel engine. The cylinder liner 10 has a body 14 with a cylindrical inner wall 16 defining a cylinder bore 18 for alternating a piston 20 along a central axis 21 thereof. Piston 20 typically has at least one annular ring groove 22 for floating reception of a piston ring, wherein a higher top piston ring 24 facilitates guiding piston 20 during alternation while also inhibiting upward passage of oil from the piston ring. from the bottom of the piston 20.A fig. 1 shows the piston 20 in a top dead center (TDC) position, with the top piston ring 24 having an upper surface 26 (figs. 2 and 3) coincident with an imaginary annular TDC line or plane 28 extending generally transversely to the central axis 21 around the inner wall 16. The TDC plane 28 separates two portions of the cylinder bore 18, with a lower portion 30 having a first diameter D defined below the TDC plane 28 through which. the piston alternates, and an upper portion 32 having a second diameter dl defined above the TDC plane. Top end 32 includes a material 34 which may be formed as a monolithic part with the inner wall 16. The material 34 extends inwardly toward the center axis 21 of the cylinder bore 18 with respect to an inner diameter D of the surface 16 of the portion 16. bottom 30.
Material 34 thereby inhibits fluid and gas flow, thereby reducing the amount of oil expelled via upward oil exhaust (resulting from oil above the uppermost piston ring being expelled upwardly by piston 20 and / or piston ring 24 during an upward stroke of the piston), for exhaust emissions, while also acting to provide a flue gas labyrinth flowing to the uppermost piston ring 24. Consequently, any localized formation of oxidized lubrication is inhibited from accumulating in the back of the piston ring groove22, which in turn acts to prevent a condition known as "carbonization" of the rings 24, or "binding" of the rings 24. In addition, material 34 acts to remove or scrape carbon buildup from a surface elevation portion 26 of piston 20, wherein the upper raised portion 36 is defined generally between the uppermost ring 24 and a piston crown 38. This is particularly true after some use of the engine, where a desirable amount of carbon buildup (fig. 3, showing frontal plane buildup as the background shown without accumulation for illustrative purposes only) has formed in material 34. Consequently, the coating of Cylinder 10 provides a cost-effective mechanism by which it reduces exhaust emissions, improves oil consumption and extends engine life.
The material 34 on the upper portion 32 of the liner 10 is preferably formed to provide cold radial spacing ® with the upper surface 36 of the piston 20 to about 50 mm depth.
3.Generally, material 34 is formed to the smallest inner diameter dl over at least one section of the upper portion 32, by about 0.5-1.5% relative to the inner diameter D of the lower portion 30. The width (w) of the material34 extends axially along the central axis 21, and may be varied in cover length as desired, but extending to an area of the upper portion of the cylinder 32 immediately adjacent to the imaginary TDC plane 28. Thereby scraping the upper surface 36 Dopist 20 is facilitated in use as shown in FIG. 3
The cylinder liner 10, with the material 34 formed over the upper portion 32, can be further processed, comminuted, heat treated, coated hardened or fully hardened without further difficulties. However, since the inner diameter dl of the upper portion 32 is smaller than the inner diameter D of the lower portion 30, it is generally preferred, and in some cases necessary for mounting the piston 20 with rings 24 mounted thereon, the cylinder liner 10 from its underside, with the piston 20 being attached to the connecting rod (not shown), prior to mounting cylinder block 12 to the engine block. Material 34 extending radially into inner wall 16 may be formed by one or more mechanisms. For example, material 34 may be formed in an extrusion process in which inner wall material 16 is extruded or serrated to the cylinder liner material to produce peaks 40 (figs. 2 and 3) extending radially inwardly relative to the inside diameter. D lower portion 30 by a predetermined distance P, such that the peaks 40 define the second diameter d1, and valleys extending radially outwardly with respect to the inner diameter D of the lower portion 30 by a predetermined distance V to define a third diameter d2. With this construction of material 34, the diameter D of the lower portion 30 is larger than the diameter of the peaks 40 and the diameter d2 of the valleys 42 is larger than the diameter D of the lower portion 30. Preferably a uniform pattern of the peaks 40 and valleys42 is formed, as in a cross-hatched or rectangular pattern, for example. In addition to extrusion, material 34 may be plastic formed using other material forming processes such as embossing or blasting media, for example. It should be recognized that masking may be used to prevent material formation on the inner surface of the lower portion 30, and thus the material formation 34 may be restricted to the upper portion 32 of the inner wall 16. It should also be recognized that in addition to the material formation 34 as a monolithic piece with the upper surface 32, the material 34 may be formed by joining a layer of additional material as a single piece with an inner surface 16, either by screen printing or spray coating, for example. In addition, it should be recognized that when a separate material is applied to the inner wall 16, the material 34 may be selected from a material suitable to support the engine operating environment. It should further be recognized that, regardless of how the material extends radially inwardly 34 is formed, it should preferably be formed according to the cold radial spacing parameters set forth above.
In use, material 34 formed on top surface 32 acts to benefit engine operation in various ways. Initially, material 32 provides a maze to inhibit the downflow of hot combustion gases and fluid toward the uppermost piston ring 24 and 22. Thus, the ingress of hot gas and fluid from the combustion chamber beyond the uppermost piston ring 24 is inhibited, thereby retarding the local oxidation of lubricant and decreasing charcoal formation within and behind the groove 22, thereby promoting proper functioning of the piston rings 24. As mentioned, this acts to reduce the probability of ring binding. Thus, the service life, and engine efficiency between repairs is enhanced.
With continued use of the engine over time, radially inwardly extending material 34 acts to attract and accumulate a desired amount of accumulation (FIG. 3) such as carbon deposits 44 therein. Accumulation begins with oil being deposited on the surface of material 34, where the oil's cohesion on the surface is enhanced by the undulating geometry of peaks 40 and valleys 42, on which the oil is oxidized to begin to form carbon deposit layers 44. The accumulation of carbon deposits 44 serves as a mechanical barrier to downward gas penetration, while also acting as a barrier to upward drag and release of oil. The amount of carbon buildup 44 is self-regulating as a result of an upper edge 46 of the piston top face 36 which scrapes away any accumulation excess during an upward stroke of the piston 20.
Consequently, any scraped carbon will be consumed / burned during combustion or discharged during the discharge stroke. Given the minimal amounts of carbon formation per engine cyclothermodynamics, any excess is easily processed and consumed by the engine itself.
The mechanical barrier 44 formed by carbon accumulation, which is facilitated by material 34, thus performs at least two important roles to increase the performance of engine operation. First, it inhibits downward penetration of gas and fluid, and secondly, it inhibits upward scraping of the oil and its release outward. The first of which acts to increase engine life by preventing the onset of lifting and adhesion of the ring while the second acts to improve engine oil consumption and reduce flush emissions. Consequently, a 10 cylinder liner constructed within the scope of this The invention, as defined by the claims, provides at least the benefits of the bands discussed in the above section, which, as mentioned, require complex and precise machining and secondary installation without having to incur the negative aspects associated with it. In addition, it is believed that the service life of the engine between servicing can be further enhanced compared to the service life achievable using the above mentioned ranges. Also, cylinder liners of any size and thickness may benefit from this invention, as opposed to the use of separate bands, which require the cylinder liners to be of appropriate thickness to form the slots or fittings extending radially outwardly for receipt thereof.
It is to be understood that other embodiments of the invention which perform the same function are incorporated herein within the scope of any finally permitted patent claims.
