Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A hollow upholsterer's button comprising an upper part and a lower part. The parts are each provided with an upright circumferential rim, with the aid of which the parts are in communication with one another. A cushion, mattress or suchlike upholstered article is provided with a lining and hollow uphol-sterer's buttons respectively. Air passages are provided in at least in the lower part of said upholsterer's button the air passages being also found in the upright circumferential rim thereof.
A hollow upholsterer's button comprising an upper part and a lower part. The parts are each provided with an upright circumferential rim, with the aid of which the parts are in communication with one another. A cushion, mattress or suchlike upholstered article is provided with a lining and hollow uphol-sterer's buttons respectively. Air passages are provided in at least in the lower part of said upholsterer's button the air passages being also found in the upright circumferential rim thereof.
Description
This invention relates to a hollow upholsterer's but-ton comprising an upper part and a lower part, said parts each being provided with an upright circumferential rim, with the aid of which said parts are connected with one another, and a cushion, mattress or the like upholstered article provided with a liningand hollow upholsterer's buttons respectively and also relates to a cushion, mattress or suchlike upholstered article provided with such hollow upholsterer's buttons.
When manufacturing cushions, in particular for motor-cars, mattresses and other upholstered articles according to the vacuum deep drawing method one is forced to use air imper-meable covering materials since otherwise the vacuum in the mould cannot be obtained or maintained. This applies both for lining materials which consist exclusively of a synthetic foil, the so-called artificial leather, and for a synthetic foil pro-vided with a textile material. Consequently the cushions, mattresses and other upholstered articles present the drawback that they are impermeable to air and are so-called "non-breath-ing".
This drawback is eliminated by the upholsterer's button according to the invention in that at least in the lower par~
of said upholsterer's button air passages are provided which are also found in the upright circumferential rim thereof.
Upholsterer's buttons comprise at their iower end an eyelet or hook to which a loop of textile wire or metal wire is fastened with one end, said loop being drawn through an aperture in the cushion or some other upholstered article pro-vided with a lining, the other end of the loop being secured to a counter-button or similar means. Since according to the invention air passages are provided in the lower part of the upholsterer's buttons, the interior of said buttons communicates through said passages with the interior of the lined or up-' ) -2-~ 05'Z0~7 holstered article. As the button is embodied such that part of the circumferential rim of its bottom portion comprising air passages cannot come into contact with the outer surface of the article, the interior of said button is in direct communic-ation with the atmosphere so that air may flow via the buttons into and out of the cushion or other upholstered article.
In order to reduce the dimensions of the upholsterer's button according to the invention one may also provide air passages in the upright circumferential rim of the upper part thereof, said passages communicating with the air passages in the upright circumferential rim of the lower part of the button.
In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a hollow upholstery button which comprises an upper part and a lower part, the parts each being provided with an axially extending circumferential rim which rims interfit one within the other, there being air passages through at least the lower part and in the circumferential rim thereof.
In accordance with a further aspect of the present in-vention, there is provided a hollow upholsterer's button com-prising: a first part and a second part, each of said parts having a body and an extending circumferential rim, said rims adapted to interfit one with another thereby interconnecting said first and second parts tc provide a hollow button assembly, at least one aperture in the circumferential rim of said second part providing communication between the exterior of said hollow button assembly and the interior of said hollow button assembly, and at least one aperture in the body of said second part pro-viding communication between the interior of said hollow button assembly and the exterior of said hollow button assembly.
The invention will be further explained below with reference to the drawings showing by way of example two em-bodiments of part of a cushion provided with an upholsterer's 105'~017 button according to the invention.
The drawings show in Fig. 1 a section of part of the cushion in which ex-clusively air passages are provided in the bottom part and in the circumferential rim of the button, and in Fig. 2 a section of part of the cushion in which also in the circumferential rim of the button air passages are pro-vided.
The cushion 1 shown in Fig. 1 comprises a passage 2 for providing an upholsterer's button 3. Said upholsterer's button comprises a cuplike upper part 4 with a circumferential rim 5 and an inverted cuplike lower part 6 with a circumferential rim 7 which has a greater height than the circumferential rim 5 of the upper part 4 so that said circumferential rim 5 engages on-ly part of the circumferential rim 7 of the lower part 6. The portion of the circumferential rim 7 not engaged by the circum-ferential rim 5 of the upper part 4 is provided with air pas-sages 8. This portion of the circumferential rim is drawn with its bottom portion against the upholstery 9 of the cushion 1 by a loop or wire 10 one end of which is secured to an eyelet 11 which is provided at the lower part 6 of the button 3. The other end of said loop or wire 10 is fastened to a plate 13 comprising a brace 12.
As is apparent from Fig. 1 the part of the lower part 6 of the button 3 lying between the circumferential rim 7 com-prises a large number of small apertures.
Since the interior of the upholsterer's button 3 communi-cates via the air passages in the circumferential rim of the lower part with the atmosphere and by the apertures 14 with the interior of the cushion, air can easily flow via said button in-to and out of the interior of the cushion. The upper part of the button 3, which constitutes a closed surface, protects the 105Z~17 interior of the cushion against incident light and consequently, when the cusion is filled with foamed material, said material does not run the risk of crumbling.
The embodiment of the upholsterer's button depicted in Fig. 2 differs from the one according to Fig. 1 only in that in the circumferential rim of the upper part thereof passages 17 are provided coinciding with the air passages 18 in the circum-ferential rim of the lower part of the button.
Instead of a large number of small air passages 14 in the portion between the circumferential rim of the bottom por-tion it is also possible to provide one single larger air passage or a few larger air passages in said portion of the lower part of the button, and instead of the eyelet 14 and the plate 13 with the brace 12 other means known per se can be used for se-curing the loop or wire 10. The outer surface of the button 3 or 15 may be provided with a lining of any suitable material.
When manufacturing cushions, in particular for motor-cars, mattresses and other upholstered articles according to the vacuum deep drawing method one is forced to use air imper-meable covering materials since otherwise the vacuum in the mould cannot be obtained or maintained. of said upholsterer's button air passages are provided which are also found in the upright circumferential rim thereof.
Upholsterer's buttons comprise at their iower end an eyelet or hook to which a loop of textile wire or metal wire is fastened with one end, said loop being drawn through an aperture in the cushion or some other upholstered article pro-vided with a lining, the other end of the loop being secured to a counter-button or similar means. Since according to the invention air passages are provided in the lower part of the upholsterer's buttons, the interior of said buttons communicates through said passages with the interior of the lined or up-' ) -2-~ 05'Z0~7 holstered article. As the button is embodied such that part of the circumferential rim of its bottom portion comprising air passages cannot come into contact with the outer surface of the article, the interior of said button is in direct communic-ation with the atmosphere so that air may flow via the buttons into and out of the cushion or other upholstered article.
In order to reduce the dimensions of the upholsterer's button according to the invention one may also provide air passages in the upright circumferential rim of the upper part thereof, said passages communicating with the air passages in the upright circumferential rim of the lower part of the button.
In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a hollow upholstery button which comprises an upper part and a lower part, the parts each being provided with an axially extending circumferential rim which rims interfit one within the other, there being air passages through at least the lower part and in the circumferential rim thereof.
In accordance with a further aspect of the present in-vention, there is provided a hollow upholsterer's button com-prising: a first part and a second part, each of said parts having a body and an extending circumferential rim, said rims adapted to interfit one with another thereby interconnecting said first and second parts tc provide a hollow button assembly, at least one aperture in the circumferential rim of said second part providing communication between the exterior of said hollow button assembly and the interior of said hollow button assembly, and at least one aperture in the body of said second part pro-viding communication between the interior of said hollow button assembly and the exterior of said hollow button assembly.
The invention will be further explained below with reference to the drawings showing by way of example two em-bodiments of part of a cushion provided with an upholsterer's 105'~017 button according to the invention.
The drawings show in Fig. 1 a section of part of the cushion in which ex-clusively air passages are provided in the bottom part and in the circumferential rim of the button, and in Fig. 2 a section of part of the cushion in which also in the circumferential rim of the button air passages are pro-vided.
The cushion 1 shown in Fig. 1 comprises a passage 2 for providing an upholsterer's button 3. Said upholsterer's button comprises a cuplike upper part 4 with a circumferential rim 5 and an inverted cuplike lower part 6 with a circumferential rim 7 which has a greater height than the circumferential rim 5 of the upper part 4 so that said circumferential rim 5 engages on-ly part of the circumferential rim 7 of the lower part 6. The portion of the circumferential rim 7 not engaged by the circum-ferential rim 5 of the upper part 4 is provided with air pas-sages 8. This portion of the circumferential rim is drawn with its bottom portion against the upholstery 9 of the cushion 1 by a loop or wire 10 one end of which is secured to an eyelet 11 which is provided at the lower part 6 of the button 3. The other end of said loop or wire 10 is fastened to a plate 13 comprising a brace 12.
As is apparent from Fig. 1 the part of the lower part 6 of the button 3 lying between the circumferential rim 7 com-prises a large number of small apertures.
Since the interior of the upholsterer's button 3 communi-cates via the air passages in the circumferential rim of the lower part with the atmosphere and by the apertures 14 with the interior of the cushion, air can easily flow via said button in-to and out of the interior of the cushion. The upper part of the button 3, which constitutes a closed surface, protects the 105Z~17 interior of the cushion against incident light and consequently, when the cusion is filled with foamed material, said material does not run the risk of crumbling.
The embodiment of the upholsterer's button depicted in Fig. 2 differs from the one according to Fig. 1 only in that in the circumferential rim of the upper part thereof passages 17 are provided coinciding with the air passages 18 in the circum-ferential rim of the lower part of the button.
Instead of a large number of small air passages 14 in the portion between the circumferential rim of the bottom por-tion it is also possible to provide one single larger air passage or a few larger air passages in said portion of the lower part of the button, and instead of the eyelet 14 and the plate 13 with the brace 12 other means known per se can be used for se-curing the loop or wire 10. The outer surface of the button 3 or 15 may be provided with a lining of any suitable material.
Claims (3)
1. A hollow upholstery button which comprises an upper part and a lower part, the parts each being provided with an axially extending circumferential rim which rims interfit one within the other, there being air passages through at least the lower part and in the circumferential rim thereof.
2. A hollow upholsterer's button comprising: a first part and a second part, each of said parts having a body and an extending circumferential rim, said rims adapted to interfit one with another thereby interconnecting said first and second parts to provide a hollow button assembly, at least one aperture in the circumferential rim of said second part providing commun-ication between the exterior of said hollow button assembly and the interior of said hollow button assembly, and at least one aperture in the body of said second part providing communi-cation between the interior of said hollow button assembly and the exterior of said hollow button assembly.
3. An upholsterer's button assembly as defined in claim 2, wherein the circumferential rim of said first part also includes at least one aperture and said aperture in the circum-ferential rim of said second part is so arranged as to be co-axially aligned with said aperture in said first part.
