Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
An umbrella having a shaft and ribs extending there-from for supporting a canopy in an open condition thereof, the improvement in which said shaft and ribs are in fluid communica-tion with each other, are hollow, and are formed from a flexible gas impervious solid material and means are provided for releasably inflating said shaft and ribs to open said umbrella.
Description
7~;5 The present invention relates to umbrellas. In particùlar, the present invention relates to umbrellas of the type having a shaft and ribs made of soft air-impervious flexible material which members arein fluid inter communication and which allow for the ` umbrella to be opened by associated inflating means such as a hand pump and to be closed for quick and simple storage by deflatior thereof.
Umbrellas in which the canopy is open by inflating the ribs are disclosed for example in Canadian Patents 16,767; 113,426 and r~ 10 589,089. However, the shaft in such umbrellas of this inflatable type is usually of the rigid type and sometimes of a telescopic type which restricts the storability of the umbrella.
The present invention provides an umbrella which is totally inflatable and is thus better adapted for storage and further, is made of a soft flexible material such as P.V.C. and thus is less prone to injur innocent pedestrians in use.
According to the present invention therefore, there is provided in an umbrella having a shaft and ribs extending therefrom for supporting a canopy in their open condition thereof, the improv~
ment in which said shaft and ribs are in fluid communication with each other, are hollow, and are formed from a flexible gas imperviou~
solid material and means are pro~ided for releasably inflating said shaft and ribs to open said umbrella.
In accordance with the present invention the ribs and shaft and for that matter also the canopy, are formed from a soft flexibl~
material which is air impervious and which is suitably an organic resin such as a thermoplastic resin and in particular, a vinyl resi However, it will be readily realized that any resin which satisfies the above criteria would be useful in the umbrella of the present invention.

For inflatin~ the umbrella a hand pump is suitably connected by a one-way valve to the end of the shaft and a valve means for releasing air from the shaft as desired is also provided.
Further, to enhance the storability of the umbrella, the umbrella includes an elongated cup connected to the pump and providing a socket into which the canopy, ribs and shaft may be fol~ed on release of air pressure therefrom so as to convert the umbrella into its collapsed condition for such storage.
The present invention will be further illustrated by way of the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view with parts broken away, of an umbrella according to one embodiment of the present invention. Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken along the line 2-2 of Figur~ 1 and Figure 3 is perspective view of the umbrella of Figure 1 packed in the handle.
Referring to the drawings, the umbrella comprises a hollow shaft 10 of soft air impervious flexible material, such as a vinyl resin and in particular polyvinyl chloride. A shaft 10 is in fluid - communication with radially downwardly arched hollow ribs 12 of a similar soft air impervious flexible material.Between the ribs 12 are connected arched triangular webs 14 which may all be of a similar material. A hand pump 16 is connected to the end of the shaft 10 ; by a one-way valve 18 and an elongated cup is connected to the cylinder of the pump 16 in spaced, surrounding relation to the valve 18. The depth of the cup 20 is such that when the umbrella is deflated by opening the flat-valve 22 to release the air, the shaft 10, ribs 12, and webs 14 can be compacted and stuffed into the - ~pocket provided by the cup 20 as shown particularly at 22 in Figure 3.
- When the umbrella is inflated by pumping the button 24 of the c~S Sf~a~vn -30 hand pump 16, the pump ~ 16 will constitute a convenient handle ~
-, in Figure 1 for ~he umbrella. The same is true when the umbrella is stored in the cup 20, see Figure 3.
