Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A seal made of elastomeric material is disclosed consisting of a strip having varying shapes adapted to fit into one or several longitudinal grooves made in the surfaces of wooden beam members and joists. As a preferred use, the seal provides excellent and durable sealing and insulation between the top surfaces of a concrete foundation wall and the overlying sill members of a frame house.

This invention relate~ to building frameworks ~nd, mors particula~ly,to a n0w type of se~ling msmber ror the 8ill members, and al~o the joiste, beam~ and timber~ of a building frame ~ACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
When 9ill members are secured to the top surfaces of the concrete foundatiDn wslls o- a frame housa, it is well known that the fit is not pertect, o~ing to the irregular ourfece of ths concrete itselr. The sp3ces thereby creatad are u-ually insulatQd with wme type ot packing, ~uch a~ gla~s w ol, which has proved to be inadequate becauoe it is packed to an excessive extent. A capillary phsnomenon takes pl~ce. Water and humidity ore adoorbed by the packing. The humid packing io heat oonducting with rrost formation at the interior ~urfaces in cold weather. This io on actual and widespread problsm.
It would also be desirable to have seals between the other wooden members ot a house or oportment building, for example between the vertical frome memb-rs, between the horizontal beams and the floorbosrds and between all the various joists and their correspondingly sttached beam or trame me~b-rs. Such a seal would be advantageous 2û for preventing creaking noises in a floor and for providing a more complete noise insulation for partition U911e-OSJECTS 0~ THE INVENTIûN

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF ~HE INVENTION

The invention consistR of seal strips of various shape3 and combinations made of resilient, flexible and durable elastomeric material, such as rubber or elastom~ric closed cell, ~oam matsrial, such as clo~ed-cell ~oam rubber, attached to a piece of lum~er. In Figure 1, a rirst and second embodiments of the seal are shown, the ~irst being a cross-sectionally T-shaped seal 1 secured in a longitudinal groove 2, mads in a standard two-by-four beam 3. The second seal 4 i~ a tlat strip bent to an arcuate in croes-section and its two longitudinal edges are engaged in two longitudinally parallel slots or groove~ 5, made in one Or the wider surraces of beam 3.
Figure 2 depicts a third embodiment Or the seal used in com-bination with the flrst or T-shaped embodiment. The third embodiment of the ~eal is two parallel strips 6, rectangular in cross-section, each secured in a groove 7 Or a two-by-tour beam O ad~acent the opposite edges ot the wlder side of beam 8.
Figure 3 shows a T-shaped oeal 1 secured in a groove made in téh narrow side Or e beam or ~oi~ 9.
~ figure 4 shows a stud member 10 having both narrow dies 11 each provided with a T-~hsped ~trip 1 ~ecured in a longitudinal groove.
Figure 5 is a tourth embodiment or the seal according to the present invention. The seel 12, shown herein~ is a variation ot the rlrst embodiment, that is it i~ a T-shspe, but each side of the ~oot 12' o~ the "T" is provided upwardly angularly pro~ecting anchoring rlflnges 13. Flanges 13 extend 811 along the length of the strip used and serve to securely anchor ~eal 12 in the groove of a trame member, beam member or ~oi~t.
In Figure 6, i8 shown how some ot the various embodiments of the seal might be uoed in actusl construction. A ~oi~t 14 supports a tran~verHe beam member 15 which i- provided with ~eal 6 along its bottom surrace snd oeal 1 along its opposite n~rrow side~. An upright trame member~ or stud 16, is secured to beam member 15 and its opposite

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF ~HE INVENTION

In Figure ~, i8 shown how the seal~ might possibly be used in another pert o~ a building~ erection. A cross-~ection oP the concrete foundation wall 19 is shown and on it, i8 rasting a standard 8ill member 20. Lastly, Figure 9 shows the embodiment of Figure ~ without facing member 21. Séals 6 provide effective sealing and heat in~ulation between th- usually rough and uneven top surface 23 of foundation wall 19 and the overlying sill members 20. Seals 6, 6', although preferred, could be replsced by seal 4 tor this application. S~ala 6, 6' or 4, being resili!ent and flexible,will yield and conform to uneven surface 23, and will also provide good heat in~ulation. Strips 1, 12 or 17 on top of floor beam~ 22 eliminate loor creaking and noise conduction. In the partitlon wall ~ystem of figure 6, otrips 1, or 12, reduce noi~e and odour transmission. In all embodiments, the se~1 0trip msy be simply pre~s titted into the groove Or the piece of lumber, although it could be glusd therein.
Where the seal i~ ~ubjected to heavy loading, such as bstween foundation wall 19 and sill members 20, rubber or other cell-less, elastomeric flexib~le and resilisnt material i8 pre~erably used a8 the seal material. Where light loading is involved, cellular, preferably clo~ed cell~ elastomeric material, is preferably used.

Claims
THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN
EXCLUSIVE PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED, ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
An elongated wooden member for frame building construction, of rectangular cross-section and having a flat wider longitudinal face adapted to abut against a support surface of a building structure, said wooden member having at least two longitudinal spaced-apart parallel grooves with parallel side faces perpendicular to said face of said member and a bottom face parallel to said face of said member, said grooves extending along the entire length of said wooden member and opening at said face of said member, said grooves being inwardly spaced from the respective narrower longitudinal faces of said member, at least two longitudinal strips made of resilient non-heat conducting, elastomeric, com-pressible, closed cell foam material, each said strip, when not compressed, being of rectangular cross-section, each strip fitted and retained within and completely filling one of said longitudinal grooves and having its longer cross-sectional dimension at right angle to said face of said member, each said strip, when not compressed, projecting away from said face of said member, each said strip, when compressed, capable of entering completely within the groove in which it is fitted, said strips, due to their resiliency, assuring a close waterproof and insulating fit with the support surface even if the latter is uneven.
EXCLUSIVE PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED, ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
An elongated wooden member for frame building construction, of rectangular cross-section and having a flat wider longitudinal face adapted to abut against a support surface of a building structure, said wooden member having at least two longitudinal spaced-apart parallel grooves with parallel side faces perpendicular to said face of said member and a bottom face parallel to said face of said member, said grooves extending along the entire length of said wooden member and opening at said face of said member, said grooves being inwardly spaced from the respective narrower longitudinal faces of said member, at least two longitudinal strips made of resilient non-heat conducting, elastomeric, com-pressible, closed cell foam material, each said strip, when not compressed, being of rectangular cross-section, each strip fitted and retained within and completely filling one of said longitudinal grooves and having its longer cross-sectional dimension at right angle to said face of said member, each said strip, when not compressed, projecting away from said face of said member, each said strip, when compressed, capable of entering completely within the groove in which it is fitted, said strips, due to their resiliency, assuring a close waterproof and insulating fit with the support surface even if the latter is uneven.
