Abstract

IMPROVED FOLDABLE CIRCULAR BAKING MOLD
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A foldable circular baking mold consisting of a bottom wall portion and side wall portion. The bottom wall portion is provided with a fold line extending across the bottom wall, and a tab is formed on the side edge of the bottom wall at any desired location.
The side wall portion comprises a strip having folds at predetermined intervals, each fold terminating in pointed end and capable of being bent at right angles on one side of the strip. The bending is facilitated by a fold line extending along the length of the strip adjacent the pointed ends.

Description

3~Z~8~'~

The present invention relates to an improved circular baking mold made from a bottom wall portion and a side wall portion interconnectible to one another.
Circular molds for making cake or pie shells have hitherto usually been provided as conventional baking molds usually made of metal, ceramic or other materials. In addition to the production of confectionary, baking mixes for domestic use have been enjoying increasing popularity for many years. Enclosed with some mixes are folded cake molds made of coated cardboard and intended to be used only once. Such molds need only be unfolded by the user before use and they have hitherto been in the form of boxes or polygonal, e.g., octagonal molds.
Attempts have also been made to produce folding circular molds.
All existing, folding, circular cake molds have a disadvantage in that they are octagonal and not really circular. They also lack the necessary seal between the side wall and the bottom.
German Unility Model 80 32 ~60 describes a circular baking mold, and more particularly a cake mold, made of a foldable material and consisting of an annular edge strip, a strip flanged inwardly disposed at approxi-mately right angles, and a bottom wall inserted into the annular edge strip and supported by the flanged strip.
That mold is characterized in that the edge strip comprises a plurality of folds spaced from each other and squeezed together by squeeze-molding. The proposed flanged strip does not, however, fully solve the problem of providing a seal between the bottom wall and side wall.

i . ~

~iz~ 4 According to German Utility Model 81 21 031, mold blanks are described, but these do not produce circular molds. Instead, they produce octagonal molds as mentioned hereinbefore.
Even the one-shot pie mold, described in German OS 29 48 23] and consisting of a collapsible polygonal ring with notched, inwardly foldable tabs, a polygonal bottom wall adapted to be fitted into the polygonal ring, and a vertical tear-off tab, fails to solve the problems arising during the production and use of existing folding circular cake molds. Furthermore, this is again an octagonal mold.
The folding circular cake mold described herein-after and illustrated in the drawing attached hereto, assists in solving the above-mentioned problems.
According to a broad aspect of the present invention there is provided a foldable circular baking mold comprising a bottom wall portion and a side wall portion. The rnold is characterized in that the bottom wall portion is provided with a fold line extending there-across. A tab is formed on a side edge of the bottom wall at any desired location. The side wall portion is defined by a strip having transverse folds at predetermined inter-vals. Each fold terminates in a pointed end and is capable of being bent at right angles on one side of the strip. A
fold line extends along the length of the strip adjacent the pointed ends to facilitate bending of the pointed ends.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described with reference to the example thereof as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

FIGURE 1 is a plan view of the bottom wall portion of the mold according to the present invention;
FI~URE 2 is a side view of the side wall portion of the mold according to the present invention, and FIGURE 3 is a side view of another design of the side wall portion of the mold according to the present invention and comprising a parting fold.
Referring to the drawings, the circular cake mold according to the present invention comprises a circular bottom wall portion 1 and a side wall portion 11.
Both portions are preferably made of foldable cardboard provided on one side with a coating which is preferably made of a material which facilitates separation of the cake mold from the product baked therein.
It is proposed, according to the present invention, to fold the bottom wall portion along its diameter so that it can be conveniently closed for storage in the package. If necessary, several folds may be provided to simplify storage of the bottom wall portion.
The fold lines may even intersect, although this naturally has an adverse effect upon the stability of the bottom wall portion. The proposed fold is indicated at 2 in Figure 1. The circular bottom wall 1 of the cake mold is preferably also provided with a tab 3 which may be at any desired location on the circumferential edge of the bottom wall~ The purpose of this tab 3 is to facilitate removal of the bottom wall portion 1 from the cake after side wall portion 11 has been removed.
The length of the strip forming the side wall portion 11 corresponds to the circumference of bottom wall portion 1 and is provided with folds 8 at predeterminable intervals therealong. These folds 8 have pointed ends 5 and as described hereinafter with reference to ~igure 2 these points 5 may be at opposed ends of each fold 8.
They may, however, also be arranged in such a manner that two points 5 are provided at the ends of wider folds 8 (see Figure 3).
The pointed ends 5 are adapted to be bent to one side of the strip 11 at xight angles so that they eventually serve to support and secure bottom wall portion 11. Although the pointed ends 5 may be of various geome-trical shapes, they are preferably made triangular so that, when the side wall portion strip is bent into a circle, they provide a satisfactory seal between the two parts.
The closing means 9 and 7 are of known design, preferably in the form of two slots 9 facing two tabs 7 at the opposed end edges of the strip. The tabs 7 contain stamped semi-circular incisions 10 which hook into the slots and thus hold the mold securely. Closing of the mold may, of course, also be achieved either by means of one tab and one slot or by means of several tabs and several slots.
According to the embodiment illustrated in Figure 3 of the cake mold, the edge strip 11 is widened and provided with a parting line or perforation line 6. The pointed ends 5 are provided on one or both longitudinal sides of the strip. In practice, this design ~nakes it possible to carry out two operations with the resulting cake mold~

~4~

The user must separate the cake mold at the parting line or perforation line 6, which provides him with two molds. The smaller mold may be used for baking whereas the larger mold, after cooling, accommodates the pastry part of the product being baked, which is then coated with a jelly or some other product, for example cream. After the product has cooled or solidified, the second part of the mold may also be removed and discarded.
It is within the ambit of Lhe present invention to cover any obvious modifications of the examples of the preferred e~bodiment described herein, provided such modifications fall within the scope of the appended claims.
