Abstract
ABSTRACT
A boat and a method of assembly therefor has a clamp with three slots in it. Two of the slots are mirror images of one another and are symmetrical about a longitudinal centre line of said boat and are located on either side of a vertical plane through said centre line when the boat is in an upright position. A bottom slot extends between a lower end of the other two slots. The bottom slot is designed to receive one end of a bottom of a boat during construction. The other two slots are designed to receive one end of a side of the boat during construction. The clamp eliminates the requirement for the construction of a frame or jig before constructing the boat. In some boats, two clamps are utilized. Boats of various designs can be constructed.

This invention relates to a boat and a method of making a boat where the boat has a clamp as one part thereof, which can hold the sides in a fixed position relative to one another. While this invention could be utilized for larger or smaller boats depending on the type, it is particularly directed to small boats rangin~ in length from eight feet to thirty feet.
During the construction of previous boats, the sides and bottom of the boat are formed on a frame or jig. Even if the boat is constructed using a kit, the frame or jig must first be formed befoxe the bottom and sides of the boat can be installed. Once the boat is constructed on the jig, it is then placed on a proper frame and the jig is removed. There is a problem with existing kits for small wooden boats in that they are too complex because of the re~uirements for a jig or similar form on which the boat is constructed; or, it takes much too long to construct a boat using the kit; or, the kit is much too expensive;
or, the ~it requires a hi~h level of skill in order to be used properly.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a method of makin~ a boat that is simple to utilize and versatile in that the same method can be used to make various types and sizes of boats. It is a further object of thè present invention to provide a boat that is relatively inexpensive, yet safe and durable.
In accordance with the present invention, a boat has a bow, two sides, a stern and a bottom with a clamp at one end. The clamp has two slots that are symmetrical about a longitudinal centre line of said boat, one slot being located on either sid~ of a ~2~

During the construction of previous boats, the sides and bottom of the boat are formed on a frame or jig. Even if the boat is constructed using a kit, the frame or jig must first be formed befoxe the bottom and sides of the boat can be installed. It is an object of the present invention to provide a method of makin~ a boat that is simple to utilize and versatile in that the same method can be used to make various types and sizes of boats. In accordance with the present invention, a boat has a bow, two sides, a stern and a bottom with a clamp at one end. The clamp has two slots that are symmetrical about a longitudinal centre line of said boat, one slot being located on either sid~ of a ~2~
vertical plane through said centre line when the boat is in an upright position. The two slots are mirror images of one another and have a cross-sectional shape similar to but slightly larger than the cross-sectional shape of each side. One end of one sideextends into one slot and one end of the other side extends into the other slot. The clamp holds one end of each of the two sides in a fixed position and the bottom is affixed to said sides. The bow and stern are afixed to said sides and bottom.
In a method of assembling a boat, the boat has a bow, two sides, a stern and a bottom with a clamp at one end. The clamp has two slots that are symmetrical about a vertical plane through a longitudinal centre line of said boat. One slot is located on either side of said centre line and the two slots are mirror images of one another. The slots have a cross-sectional shape similar ~o but slightly larger than the cross-sectional shape of each side with a bottom slot extending between a lower end of the remaining two slots. The clamp has an outer shell and an inner liner that are adjustable relative to one another and define the slots. There are means to fixedly adjust the shell and liner relative to one another when the slots have retention means thereon.
The method includes the steps of inserting one end of the bottom into the bottom slot and one end of one side into one of the remaining slots and one end of the other side into the remaining slot, securing said bottom and sides in said slots by said retention means, pressuring the sides towards one another, securing a free end of each side to form an end of said boat opposite to the end where the clamp is ~, ~

Referring to the drawings in greater detail, a fixed clamp 2 has an outer shell 4 and an inner . liner 6. The inner line 6 has a shape similar to but . smaller than an interior shape of the shell 4. The clamp 2 has two slots 8, 10 that are mirror images of _ 3 _ 298~L4 one another, one slot being located at each side of the clamp 2. A flange 12 extends around the upper periphery of the clamp 2 and extends from the inner liner 6 outward beyond the shell 4. A bottom slot 14 extends between lower ends 16, 18 of the slots 8, 10.
The ~hree slots ~, 10, 14 are defined by the outer shell 4 and the inner liner 6. The inner liner 6 has a front face 20.
In Figure 2, there is shown an adjustable clamp 22. The same reference numerals are used for those parts o~ the clamp 22 that are similar to parts of the clamp 2. The clamp 22 has an outer shell 4 and an .inner liner 6. The inner liner 6 has a front face 20 and the outer shell 4 has a front face 24. A
flange 12 extends outward from a top of the shell 4.
Openings 25 are located in the front face 20 to receive corresponding bolts (not shown) in the front face 24 of the shell 4. The shell 4 and liner 6 of the clamp 22 are shown in an exploded position relative to one another. It can be seen that an end 26 of a bottom 28 can be inserted between a bottom 30 of the liner 6 and a bottom 32 of the shell 4.
Further, an end 34 of a side 36 can be inserted between a side ~ of the liner 6 and a side 40 of the shell 4. Also, an end 42 o~ a side flange 44 can fit under the 1ange 12. Similarly, though it is not shown, an end of another side could be inserted in the clamp to form an opposite side of the boat. once the ends of the bottom and two sides are properly inserted between the liner and shell, the liner is inserted into the shell so that the bolts from the shell ~not shown) protrude through the openings 25. relative to one another with the ends of the bottom and two sides clamped therebetween. In this position, the liner 6 and shell 4 define three slots, two side slots 8, 10 and a bottom slot 14.
S In Figure 3, there is shown the slots 8, 10, 14, the slot 8 being occupied by an end o~ the side 36 and the bottom slot 14 being half filled by half of the bottom 28. Bolts 46 from the front face 24 of the shell 4 protxude upward and inward through the openings 25 in the front face 20 of the liner 6.
In Figure 4, there is shown a clamp 48 which is identical to the clamp 22 except that there is only one bolt 50 in the front face 24 of the shell 4 and there is a slot 52 in the front face 20 of the liner ~, said slot replacing the openings 25. Also, there is shown a plurality of small openings 54 along the upper edge of the liner 6 and the shell 4 of the clamp 48, said small openings on the liner being lined with openings on the shell. When the liner and shell are in a fixed position relative to one another with the sides and bottom of the boat in between, screws (not shown) can be inserted through the openings 54 and through the sides to hold the sides in position. In addition, the sldes and bottom can be glued into the slots 8, 10, 1~. The side 36 and the side flange 44 on the right side of Figure 4 are not affixed to one another. The side 36 has openings S4 corresponding to the openings 54 on the clamp 48.
In Figure 5, there is shown a side view of the clamp 48 with dotted lines extending from upper an~ lower edges thereof to show that an upper edge 12 is substantially horizontal while a lower edge 56 tapers downward, the depth of the clamp increasing linearly from front to rear.
_ 5 _ In Figure 6, the liner 6 of the clamp 48 is shown in a fixed position relative to the shell 4. An end of one side and half the bottom has been inserted into the slots 8, 10 respectively. The remaining parts of the slot 14 and the slot 10 are left empty for purposes of illustration. As can be seen, a nut 58 is read~ to be installed onto the bolt 50 to hold the liner 6 and shell 4 in a fixed position.
In Figure 7, the clamp 48 is shown after the two sides and bottom have been installed in the appropriate slots. In Figure 8, a rounded nose 60 is shown in an exploded position relative to a front face 24 of the shell 4. It can be seen that the nose 60 can be installed to improve the performance and appearance of the boat. However, for some boats, it would be preferable to omit the nose 60. of course, there are numerous variations in shape of the nose 60 that will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art.
In Figures 9 and 10, there is shown a boat 62 with a clamp 2 at the bow and a clamp 64 at the stern. Seats 66 are shown with broken lines so that the clamp 64 is not hidden. ~t can be seen that the clamp 64 is different in shape from the clamp 2 but perorms a similar function. The clamp 64 has slots (not shown) similar to the slots of the clamp 2 and is a variation thereof. The clamp 64 could be replaced by a conventional back for the boat. The boat 62 has sides 36 and a bottom 28.
In Figure 11, there is shown a boat 68 constructed in accordance with the present invention in a form of a canoe. The canoe 68 has clamps 2 at either end thereof with sides 36, a bottom 28 and seats 66. In Figure 12, there is shown a boat 70 in ~;~9~
the form o~ a sailboat. The sailboat 70 has a clamp 2 at a bow with a nose 60 thereon and a clamp 72 at a stern. The clamp 72 is different in shape than the clamp 2 but has similar slots and performs a similar function. The boat 70 has sides 36, a bottom 28 and a deck 74. In Figure 13, there is shown a boat 76 in the form of a rowboat. The boat 76 has a clamp 2 at the bow with a nose 60 affixed thereto. A back 78 of the boat is a conventional back and not formed from a clamp. The boat 76 has sides 36, a bottom 28 and seats 60.
When a boat constructed in accordance with the present invention is in an upright position, it can readily be seen that the slots 8, lO of the clamp 2 are s~mmetrical about a longitudinal centre line of the boat with one slot being located on either side of a vertical plane through said centre line. The slots are slightly larger than the cross-sectional shape of each side of the boat so that one end of one side will fit in one slot and one end of the other side will fit in the other slot. The bottom slot has a cross-sectiollal shape similar to but slightly larger than the cross-sectional shape of the bottom of the boat.

As can be seen from Fi~ures ll, 12 and 13, the boats 68, 70, 76 have a general V-shape in the vicinity of the clamp 2, when viewed from a top. In the boat 76, the back is located at the stern of the boat and is affixed to the sides and bottom~ The clamp 2 is located at the bow. The boat 68 is V-shaped at both ends when viewed from a top. The seats 60 in the three boats 68, 70, 76 provide spacers that 4~L
assist in holding the two sides 36 apart. Other spacers can be utilized during construction o~ the boat and can be replaced with hulkheads or other permanent spacers.
In constructing the boat 68 of Figure 11, one end of the sides 36 is inserted into the slots 8, 10 of one clamp 2. The other end o~ each of the sides 36 is inserted into corresponding slots 8, 10 o~ a second clamp 2. Then the sides 36 are forced apart and held in that position by inserting the seats 60.
Preferably, the middle seat 60 is inserted first.
Finally, the bottom ~8 is inserted into the bottom slot 14 of each of the two clamp~ 2 and a longitudinal support 80 is installed along the length of the bottom 28. If desired, one end of the bottom 28 can be installed in each of the clamps 2 at the same time that the ends of the sides 36 are installed. When the boat 68 has been dry assembled in this manner, the parts are then removed, glued and replaced in their proper position and screws are inserted through the openings 5~ o~ the clamps 2. The seats are also screwed into position.
The same procedure as that described for boat 68 is followed for boat 70 except that boat 70 has a deck 74. Similarly, the boat 76 is constructed in the same manner as the boats 68, 70 except that the back 78 located at a stern of the boat 76 is not formed from a clamp, but is a conventional back. The boat 76 is constructed using only one clamp. While three forms o~ boats are described in Figures 11, 12 and 13, numerous other types of boats, within the scope of the attached claims, will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art.

Similarly, the boat 76 is constructed in the same manner as the boats 68, 70 except that the back 78 located at a stern of the boat 76 is not formed from a clamp, but is a conventional back. The boat 76 is constructed using only one clamp. While three forms o~ boats are described in Figures 11, 12 and 13, numerous other types of boats, within the scope of the attached claims, will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art.

Claims (21)
1. A boat comprising a bow, two sides, a stern and a bottom, said boat having a clamp at one end with two slots that are symmetrical about a longitudinal centre line of said boat, one slot being located on either side of a vertical plane through said centre line when the boat is in an upright position, the two slots being mirror images of one another and having a cross-sectional shape similar to but slightly larger than the cross-sectional shape of each side, one end of one side extending into one slot and one end of the other side extending into the other slot, the clamp holding one end of each of the two sides in a fixed position, the bottom being affixed to said sides and the bow and stern being affixed to said sides and bottom.
2. A boat as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the slots are defined by an outer shell and an inner liner, the liner having an outer shape similar to but smaller than an interior shape of said shell.
3. A boat as claimed in Claim 2 wherein there is a bottom slot, also defined by the shell and liner, said bottom slot extending between a lower end of the remaining two slots and having a cross-sectional shape similar to but slightly larger than the cross-sectional shape of the bottom of the boat, with one end of the bottom of the boat extending into the bottom slot.
4. A boat as claimed in Claim 3 wherein the shell and liner are adjustable relative to one another.
5. A boat as claimed in Claim 4 wherein the shell and liner each have a front face and there is a bolt extending upward and inward from the front face of the shell with a corresponding opening for receiving said bolt in the front face of the liner, said bolt being threaded to receive a nut so that the liner and shell can be tightened together with one end of the sides and bottom in between.
6. A boat as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the boat has a general V-shape in the vicinity of said clamp, when viewed from a top.
7. A boat as claimed in Claim 3 wherein the clamp is located at the bow and the stern has a back that is affixed to the sides and bottom.
8. A boat as claimed in any one of Claims 1, 3 or 5 wherein the clamp has a lower slot extending between the outer two slots, one end of the bottom being inserted into the lower slots.
9. A boat as claimed in any one of Claims 1, 3 or 5 wherein the boat is V-shaped at both ends when viewed from a top.
10. A boat as claimed in any one of Claims 1, 3 or 5 wherein there is a clamp at both ends of said boat.
11. A boat as claimed in any one of Claims 1, 3 or 5 wherein the boat contains spacers that assist in holding the sides apart.
12. A boat as claimed in any one of Claims 1, 3 or 5 wherein the clamp is symmetrical about the longitudinal centre line.
13. A method of assembling a boat, said boat having a bow, two sides, a stern and a bottom with a clamp at one end, with two slots that are symmetrical about a vertical plane through a longitudinal centre line of said boat, one slot being located on either side of said centre line, the two slots being mirror images of one another and having a cross-sectional shape similar to but slightly larger than the cross-sectional shape of each side, with a bottom slot extending between a lower end of the remaining two slots, said clamp having an outer shell and an inner liner that are adjustable relative to one another and define the slots, with means to fixedly adjust the shell and liner relative to one another, said slots having retention means thereon, said method comprising inserting one end of the bottom into the bottom slot and one end of one side into one of the remaining slots and one end of the other side into the remaining slot, securing said bottom and sides in said slots by said retention means, pressuring the sides towards one another, securing a free end of each side to form an end of said boat opposite to the end where the clamp is located, and affixing said sides to edges of said bottom.
14. A method as claimed in Claim 13 comprising the step of securing the free ends to each other so that the boat is generally V-shaped at either end.
15. A method as claimed in Claim 13 wherein the boat has a back, said method comprising the steps of installing a back of the boat between the free ends of each side and securing the free end of each side to each end of said back.
16. A method as claimed in Claim 15 wherein the boat has a spacer and installing said spacer between the sides to force the sides further apart after the free ends have been secured to the back but before installing a bottom of said boat.
17. A method as claimed in Claim 16 wherein there is more than one spacer, said method comprising installing said spacers to force the sides further apart after the free ends have been secured but before installing the bottom.
18. A method as claimed in Claim 17 wherein the spacers are replaced by seats or bulkheads.
19. A method as claimed in any one of Claims 1, 13 or 14 wherein the boat has a keel and said method comprises installing said keel after installing the bottom of said boat.
20. A method as claimed in any one of Claims 1, 13 or 14 wherein the retention means for the clamp is a combination of screws and glue.
21. A method as claimed in any one of Claims 1, 13 or 14 wherein the free ends of the boat are secured by retention means.
