Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION

A cooling device for personal use comprising a visored cap having an interior surface area that encircles and covers the head of the wearer, said interior surface having attached to a portion of it's circumference a fabric container having a slit on it's one side so as to form an opening to accept the coolant means, said coolant means consisting of a flexible plastic envelope having a plurality of individually sealed compartments which enclose a liquid or semi-liquid gel having a lower freezing point than water.

Description

201~28 The present inventlon relates generally to body coollng device~ and more particularly to a visored cap to be worn on the head having cooling means attached to lts inwardly presented surface in cantact with the brow of the head.
Various types of cooling devices for the head have been around for years. An example of such a device is descrlbed ln United States Patent No. 4,326,533, dated Aprll 27, l9B2, granted to Henderson for a "Coolant Band". The patent discloses a band of textile material containing a pocket in which is inserted a bag of freezable material. This devicelis several disadvantages. While it provides a band with coolant --material to be placed around the forehead it leaves the top of the head and a large portion of the face directly exposed to sunlight thereby defeating it' 8 purpo~e. While the band cools a small percentage of the head's ~urface the sun heats the larger exposed area. The band can provide an adhesive strip on its outward facing side ~o that it can be fastened to headgear. However, thl~ strip adhere~ to the fabric of the headgear for a short time under the condition~ and is not reusable . - .-Another device is shown in United States Patent No.
4,425,917, dated January 1~, 1984, granted to Kuznetz for a "Heat Exchange System For Body Skin" which incorporates the use of thermal cartridges having a metallic lining enclo~ing a coolant. Included is a liquid crystal sensor to gauge the temperaturo of the coolant. The system apparently acts as a . . .
heat sink or ~curce. Such a ~ystem is impractical due to ~k . .
, 20141~8 several factor~, one of which is the prohlbitive co~t of manufacturing such a system. In addition the composition of all part~ nece~sary to complete the ~ystem increase the weight being born by the scalp to a tire~ome level.
Therefore in accordance with the present invention there is provided a cooling device comprising a visored cap having an interior surface area that encircles and covers the head of the wearer, said inter~or surface having attached to a portion of it 19 circumference a fabric container having a slit on it' 5 one side so as to form an opening to accept the coolant means, ~aid coolant mean~ consi~ting of a flexible plastic envelope having a plurality of individually sealed compartments which encloee a liquid or semi-liquid gel having a lower freezing point than water.
The invention will now be described in greater detail with reference to drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of a cooling device of the invention;
FIGURE 2 i8 a perspective view of the visored cap showing the fabric container attached.
FIGURE 3 is a cro~s sectional view of coolant device taken along llnes 5-5 of FIG.4 FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of the coolant device.
FIGURE 5 is a perspective view of the fabric container showing means for closure in the form of a zipper.
FI WRE 6 19 a perspective view of the coolant means.

~14~8 Referring to the drawlng~, the embodiment of the lnventlon shown, a coolant dev~ce iO compriseg a visored cap 12. The visor cap 12 having an interior surface 14 that encircles and covers the head, also has secured to a portion of the interior surface 14 a fabric ~eam 16, ~aid seam being secured to the interior surface 14 by ~ewing one edgo of the seam 16 to the interior surface 14 of the cap ~o that the ~eam 16 may now be flipped up or down as can be seen in FIG. 3. The opposite edge of the ~eam 16 iB connected tn one edge of the fabrlc contalner 18 by stitching. Said fabric container 18 i~ composed of two separate pieces of fabric 20a and 20b sewn together along all four edges 90 that they form a pocket between them, means for gaining acce~s to pocket iB provided by a ~lit 22 cut longitudinally along the forward ~acing side --of the container 18. Mean~ of opening and closing the slit are provided by a zipper 24. --Coolant means 25 consigting of a flexible plastic envelope 26 having a plurality of individually sealed compartments 28 are inserted through ~lit 22 into fabrlc container 18, said fabric container 18 being in direct contact with the brow -~
when the cap 12 is worn on the head. The sealed compartments 2~ are filled with a liquid or semi-liquid gel having a lower freezlng point than water.
Operation of said coolant device 12 requires that the :~ :
coolant means 25 be placed in a freezer or other apparatu~ to lower the temperature of the gel. The fabric container 18 is .
then folded down to gain access to the slit 22 which is then -'."' .

opened by using the zipper 24. Coolant means 25 i8 then inserted through the slit 22 into the container 18 the container then being closed with the zipper 24. Then the fabric container 18 i8 returned to it's upright position with the slit 22 facing outward. The cap 12 i9 now placed on the head so that it encircles and coverg the head with the fabric container 18 in direct contact with the brow of the wearer to provide a cooling effect.
Although only a slngle embodiment of the present invention has been described and illustrated, the present invention i8 not limited to the features of this embodiment, but includes all variations and modifications within the scope of the claims.

Claims (4)
