- soit il comprend un tube qui débouche dans la poche à travers le couvercle et dont l'extrémité se trouve à moins de 3 cm de la surface du métal. Cette disposition permet d'assurer un léchage par le gaz du métal maintenu en agitation par les trépidations du véhicule;
METHOD AND DEVICE FOR DEGASSING AND MAINTAINING A LOW CONTENT
HYDROGEN IN LIQUID ALUMINUM ALLOYS DURING THEIR
TRANSPORT IN POCKETS
The present invention relates to a method and a device for degassing and maintaining a low hydrogen content in alloys aluminum liquids during transport in bags.
It is known to transport aluminum alloys in the liquid state in closed metal pockets internally coated with a material refractory from where they are made to where they will be cast in molds to give pieces of predetermined shape. These pockets generally have a capacity of several tonnes and are carried by two on trucks. Transport sometimes takes several hours during which the metal can come into contact with traces of water either from the surrounding humid atmosphere which enters pockets through faulty seals, i.e.
refractory linings that have become impregnated with moisture after draining the bag and which have been insufficiently dried before filling either still dross that builds up during transport cycles in poorly cleaned pockets.
This humidity has the effect of producing a phenomenon known as gassing that is to say to react with aluminum and give rise to training of hydrogen dissolved in the liquid metal in the form of gas bubbles of relatively small dimensions that will remain in the room as of porosities.
However, those skilled in the art know that a high content of dissolved hydrogen deteriorates the metallurgical health of the parts which result from it and leads in particular to low resistance to mechanical fatigue and to reduced ductilities.
It is therefore necessary in the case of the production of parts requiring good metallurgical health to ensure that the liquid metal is not not come into contact with moisture during transport.
Certainly, actions have been taken to avoid the presence of moisture in the pockets. This is how before filling we proceeded to a ~ 0 1 849 ~
further drying from inside the pockets and removed systematically dirt. we also realized systems waterproofing and created an atmosphere renewed argon above the metal.
however, the problem of gassing. Indeed, it was found that a metal having undergone a very thorough degassing before filling, i.e. having a hydrogen content less than 0.12 ppm, could easily 10 very random contain after transport up to 0.3 to 0.5 ppm hydrogen.
This gassing seems to be more frequent in summer without being able to correlate the amount of hydrogen with the humidity of the atmosphere.
According to the present invention, there is provided a method to compensate for the recovery of humidity from refractory lining or residual dirt by the 20 liquid aluminum alloys during transport in pockets closed for several hours, characterized by what throughout the transport and until the pouring of the metal, a flow of inert gas is circulated in the pocket against aluminum at a flow rate of between 0.02 and 0.2 Nm3 per tonne of alloy per hour and we evacuate simultaneously said gas out of the pocket after contact with metal.
Thus, the invention consists in introducing a gas into the pocket 30 inert towards aluminum, that is to say which is not susceptible by itself to react with aluminum. It can preferably be nitrogen or argon. Obviously, this gas is devoid of moisture so as not to be a gassing vehicle. This gas is brought to the pocket and circulates between an inlet and an outlet at a low rate and control.
- ~ B
201 & 4ql As mentioned above the flow is between o, 02 and 0.2 Nm per tonne of alloy per hour, because a throughput lower has insufficient effect on degassing while a higher flow is superfluous.
During its passage through the pocket, this gas enters the metal bath but we can limit ourselves to a simple licking of the surface because of the tremors of the pocket during from its transport there is a renewed contact between the 10 gases and metal which ensures an almost complete exchange with the mass of metal.
Under these conditions, the hydrogen capable of forming at because of the random presence of moisture is driven with the gas flow and discharged to the outside.
This maintains a relatively low gassing rate and in any case compatible with the desired quality of metal.
20 In addition, the possibility has been found to improve during transport the quality of a metal imperfectly degassed at the start.
Admittedly, the practice of degassing is known in the industrial installations. But it takes place in fixed pockets using much higher flow rates and in any case greater than 0.5 Nm3 per tonne per hour.
The invention also relates to an implementation device 30 of the method described above.
According to the present invention, there is also provided a device to compensate for the recovery of humidity by origin of the refractory lining or dross residual by liquid aluminum alloys during transport them in closed pockets for several ~ ' D
20184ql 3a hours, characterized in that it comprises at least one pocket closed and at least one pressurized gas cylinder connected between them by a circuit comprising a regulator and a flow meter, said pocket being equipped at its upper part a controlled gas leak system.
Thus, the device according to the invention results from the combination of a pocket and a gas distribution system comprising a source: the bottle and means for ensuring lo a circulation of said gases under relatively pressure low and following a controlled and weak flow first towards inside the pocket then outwards.
The pocket is of a type identical to that usually used on road vehicles, i.e. an envelope steel generally cylindrical or cylindrical in shape conical, internally lined with refractory material having an upward opening on which is placed a relatively tight cover. This pocket is combined 20 at least one bottle containing a pressurized gas which can to be liquefied /

2018 ~ gl or compressed and which is attached to the pocket or to the mounting frame of this last. From this bottle leaves a circuit comprising a regulator preferably allowing a gas pressure of a few hundredths of MPa, of a safety valve making it possible to avoid any overpressure in the pocket and a flowmeter ensuring the control of flow rates preferably between 0.1 and 1 Nm per hour. This circuit is connected to the pocket in different ways:
- either it includes a tube which opens into the pocket through the cover and the end of which is less than 3 cm from the surface of the metal. This arrangement ensures metal licking by gas maintained in agitation by the tremors of the vehicle;
- either, it includes a tube which plunges into the metal so that the gas dabbles in the metal and allows to compensate for a possible insufficiency of agitation created only by the tremors.
But, we can also place one or more porous plugs on the walls side or at the bottom of the pocket and to which said circuit is connected.
Similarly, the gas circuit can also be connected to a hollow shaft rotor such as that described in French patent N ~ 2512067 which delves into the metal and ensures a dispersion of the gas within it.
Whatever the type of gas introduction, the bag is equipped with a controlled leakage system of the gas introduced and which may have charged with hydrogen. This system can for example be a piping possibly calibrated which can also be fitted with an opening valve adjustable.
This device works in the following way: as soon as the pocket has been filled and degassed using conventional gas injection devices neutral at high flow (lance or rotor), the bottle is opened, the regulator and flow meter to achieve the desired pressure and flow. The quantity of gas available has been previously determined in order to maintain gas flow for the duration of transport and time necessary to supply the casting installations.
20184'91 The invention will be better understood using the drawing board attached which includes a figure 1 showing schematically seen in cuts the upper part of a pocket fitted with a tube which opens out above the level of the metal and a figure 2 along the same representation of a pocket equipped with a tube which plunges into the alloy of liquid aluminum.
More specifically, in Figure 1, there is a pocket 1 containing liquid aluminum alloy 2, closed on top with a waterproof cover 3. Along the side wall of the pocket is placed a bottle 4 of compressed argon connected to the pocket by a circuit 5 comprising a regulator 6, a flow meter 7, a pipe 8 gas inlet and exhaust piping 9.
In Figure 2 we find the same elements as in Figure 1.
The invention can be illustrated using the application examples following:
100 deliveries of cast aluminum alloys containing mainly of silicon as an addition element were carried out half in pockets of the prior art, half in pockets according to the invention, which were also provided with half a dip tube, the others from a tube opening into the pocket 2.5 cm from the surface of the metal. These pockets each contained 6 tonnes of metal and the duration of the transport was close to 5 hours.
With the pockets of the prior art, it was found that 5% of deliveries had arrived gassed, i.e. they contained more than 0.3 ppm hydrogen.
On the other hand, in the pockets according to the invention and in which circulated a flow of argon at a rate of 0.15 Nm. ton hour -1 and whatever the type of injection, no deliveries did not arrive gassed, the hydrogen content being less than 0.15 ppm.
This invention therefore makes it possible to reduce and avoid the gassing of the metal at the during its transport and to provide users with a product suitable for molding of parts having good metallurgical health.
