Abstract
La présente invention concerne une cellule pour la production d'aluminium par électrolyse d'un électrolyte en fusion, et notamment l'électrolyse d'alumine en solution dans un électrolyte en fusion à base de fluorure tel que la cryolithe. Ladite cellule est constituée d'anodes plongées dans l'électrolyte en fusion au-dessus d'un fond sur lequel l'aluminium en fusion produit est recueilli dans un bain qui contient des corps d'une matière résistante à l'aluminium. Sous les anodes se trouvent des grilles correspondantes (10) faites de parois droites ou inclinées (11, 12) juxtaposées constituées d'une matière résistante à l'aluminium et dont les extrémités inférieures reposent sur un fond de cellule (30) en carbone revêtu de céramique et recouvert par le bain (32) d'aluminium liquide. Les extrémités inférieures des parois constituant la grille forment une base relativement large en comparaison de la hauteur des parois. En cours de fonctionnement de la cellule, chaque grille (10) repose en position stable sur le fond de ladite cellule et peut en être retirée et y être réinsérée facilement. Chaque grille (10) possède des passages (13) généralement verticaux dimensionnés de telle sorte que le contenu en fusion de la cellule puisse se répandre à l'intérieur de ces passages. Lesdits passages verticaux (13) débouchent sur le bain ou la couche (32) d'aluminium en fusion, ce qui permet la pénétration de l'aluminium en fusion sur une certaine hauteur à l'intérieur de ces passages. Les grilles décrites ci-dessus réduisent les mouvements dans le bain d'aluminium et leurs parties supérieures peuvent jouer le rôle de cathode drainée.
